    As far as the no trade clause is concerned, I am sure he likes playing here, but it probably has more to do with him being able to dictate where he goes if he and the Twins do eventually decide to part ways. In any event, I think this is a good deal for all sides. It gives him a life altering amount of guaranteed money with lucrative incentives, which I am sure the Twins will be more than happy to pay, since it means we'll be getting the player we all know he can be.

    Yeah, the last couple years he's been just plain bad. A .249 OBP for a major league outfielder is just not acceptable. And when you consider they have a bunch of young guys who need at bats and can play OF, the decision to retain Cave is even more puzzling.

    1. As discussed by others above, the Twins already have numerous DH options. 2. The Twins should not be spending significant amounts on one year contracts. This team will not be competitive next year. Letting the young guys get some at bats will provide more value to this team in the long run.

    I understand the concern about long term deals on pitching, but that's the only way they're going to be able to sign anyone of the caliber as Berrios. And it's not like the deal he got from Toronto was the kind that could sink the franchise. I get that they're not going to splurge $40 million per year for guys like Scherzer, but Berrios is going to make less per year than Donaldson. Mauer's $23 million per year was close to dead money towards the end, but it would be tough to argue that it prevented the Twins from pursuing other free agents or contract extensions. If they will only give short term deals to pitchers it's going to be more JA Happ, Homer Bailey, Schoemaker, Rich Hill...etc..

    "But let's now see what they do with the financial flexibility."-Wolfson JA Happ anyone? It was a bad trade then, and it looks even worse now. People keep harping about how the Twins walked away with a haul, but this team needs pitching. Woods-Richardson is a project. Martin might be closer to a sure thing, but his value added to this organization does not make up for the loss of Berrios. This is a frustrating day to be a Twins fan.

    Nice article, but I don't see any point in bringing Cruz back. The reality is this club will most likely not be playoff bound in 2022, so no need to shell out money for Cruz. The same could be said for some of the starters listed in the article. How many good years do Scherzer and Greinke have left? If you think it's only one or two, then there's no point in bringing them aboard for big $$$ for another fight for the bottom of the AL central. 2022 will be about seeing which of the younger guys can play at an MLB level.

    The sad thing is, even IF all of those things happen, there is still a lot that has to be done for this team to return to the playoffs. Joe Ryan can only pitch once every five days.

    Nice article. Other than locking up Buxton, there is no reason the Twins should be spending big $$$ this offseason. With the loss of Berrios and Maeda, 2022 will be a tryout camp for the starting rotation. It makes more sense for the Twins to be active in free agency during the 2022-2023 offseason. I especially don't think they should be locking up a SS long-term when they have some legit possible in-house candidates.

    What exactly does a "bench coach" do? I always just assumed it was the manager's drinking buddy, but if the front office is making the selection then it indicates some kind of higher purpose.

    He's only pitched four innings for the Mets, so it' s too early to say. That said, I agree with the first comment. Sometimes it just takes awhile to put it all together. I'm not sure the Twins could have done anything differently.

    I agree with the above post that Buxton should be with the major league team. He can shake the rust off just as easily in the Twins lineup. They aren't going to the playoffs and his replacements have been awful. He may not be 100 percent, but so what.

    Very funny. Point taken. But look at all the guys he plucked out of obscurity from other farm systems.....Joe Mays, Kyle Lohse, Francisco Liriano, Joe Nathan, Carlos Silva, Nick Punto, David Ortiz (ouch, I know what you're going to say). He took Mauer even though the national media was telling him to take Prior or Texeira.

    Agreed. I think Ryan was a brilliant scout and talent evaluater, but his fault was in management of the 40 man roster and clinging to guys who should have been let go. (He lost me over the Matt Guerrier fiasco.) This new front office seems to go the other way, being too aggressive in cutting guys that maybe deserve a second look. Maybe we can't have one or the other and are idiots for thinking so, but I completely understand that comment.

    Speaking of guys they gave up on......that move was just bizarre. Littell was actually pretty good in 2019. 2020 was a lost season because of injury and then they just cut him loose, even though they knew they were going to have to find bullpen reinforcements going into 2021. The move was odd then, and it looks downright dumb now. Do they know something we don't?

    This front office will need to show patience. Most MLB pitchers aren't that successful right out of the gate. If you look back in Twins history, guys like Frank Viola and Brad Radke had 300+ MLB innings under their belts before they put it all together. If they think these guys have the stuff, they're going to have to let them take their lumps and not shuttle them back and forth to St Paul or the waiver wire. It's probably going to make for a long season in 2022, but we are where we are.

    The Santana trade was a Bill Smith trade. Ryan stepped down shortly before. I've always asked myself if Ryan would have made that deal.

    But they really really need pitching. Woods-Richardson is a work in progress. If they were going to trade Berrios to the Jays, I would have preferred Pearson and a couple lesser prospects.

    No Pearson? I hate this trade. Neither of those guys will help next year, if ever.
