I couldn’t agree more and I see Mike’s point too. Personally, I’d move as many of the current players whom we know will not be here next year and for whom we have a burgeoning player ready to take that place. So, that means some subset of Kepler, Gallo, Solano, Castro and even Taylor and Polanco are on the block. They can be replaced by Larnach, Miranda, Julien, Wallner and a few others who are as described in the above post. On the pitching side, it’s moving Gray that will do the most for our future. There is a strong argument that this team as constructed is not truly a contender, even if we hang on and win the AL Central. It’s about building a new, multi year window starting this trade deadline. Yes, this month!

We shouldn’t knock our Twin’s development process: three home grown players - all traded away from the team in the past year - are All-Stars (two in their first full year getting an opportunity in the majors). Congrats to Arraez, Rooker and Cano - all great stories this season no matter how our FO defenders try to spin it. I wonder who it will be next season……

Sonny Gray is the Twins only All-Star
Nashvilletwin replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Congrats Sonny. Maybe your selection drives up your trade value a bit on the margin. We had so many position players who were so close to being named to the squad…….they just missed out. What a joke. -
Sorry Matt, Max and Joey hit dingers last night. That gives each of them another month of leeway. You will just need to keep raking in St. Paul at least into August.

I think we agree 100%. All things being equal, I think you and I agree he (not projecting here) would probably much prefer option a) in the original post; that is, he gets called up for the rest of the season and gets the consistent innings and ABs to prove his future with the Twins. That’s what I also think you and I as fans would like to see Happy 4th of July to you!

Read my original post. He’d be justifiably ecstatic if the FO, who does not see him as the RFer and occasional DH of the future, traded him to a team that would give him a better/real opportunity to be just that. I never said anything about being mistreated. But I certainly implied his opportunity here, given his performance, is being mismanaged and limited. There’s no tune changing here. It’s all about him getting the best opportunity given his potential and performance. I just think he’d welcome that - certainly elsewhere if it’s not available here. You think he might want to stay home near Forest Lake even if that opportunity might not be as good. Hey, you might be right.

The young man wants a career. Sure, if he can make that happen in his own hometown, all the better. But this provincial Minnesota stuff is so overrated. A lot of people have left their hometowns and succeeded elsewhere. This young man wants a chance to be a big time Major League Baseball player and all the trappings that go with it. It’s what he has worked for his entire life. I’m pretty sure he would jump at the chance to make that a reality - even if it means leaving the Twin Cities. But you’re right, he might just want to stick around and take his chances to have that storybook hometown hero career - even if that does not maximise the probability for his most successful career as a Major League Baseball player. I shouldn’t project my ambition for him as his ambition for himself.

Wallner needs/deserves a change of scenery. Either a) call him up and give him consistent playing time and ABs for the rest of the season or b) trade him to a team who would be eager to give him that opportunity. The way this FO thinks leads me to believe b) is more likely. They can’t get a bag of balls for Kepler or Gallo due to performance and/or contract. They clearly do not see Wallner as their RF and occasional DH of the future. And they are not willing to give him the playing time in the majors to both prove them wrong (if he plays well) or diminish his trade value (if he plays poorly). At the moment his trade value may be at its peak (demolishing it in AAA with a good solid showing during a cup of coffee in the majors this season). Wallner has to be near the top of our trade candidates heading into the deadline season. Btw, Wallner would be justifiably ecstatic if the FO were to choose path b) for him.

Ok, we’d have a trade then. You can take two games under 0.500 with the outcome of the trade and our current lineup and I’ll take whatever is behind door #2 with Arraez batting lead off every day like the Marlins. It’s what makes the world go around. 👍🏻

Ok, you can have the #3 starter pitching 140-180 IPs with a 4+ era pitching every five days and I’ll take the every day lead off hitter getting on base at 0.450, never striking out, winning a batting championship, an all - star and the heart of the team. It’s easy enough to find the first - heck. Ober and Varland might have accomplished that this year or could next year. The second is virtually a unicorn for a team and franchise like the Twins. But hey, that’s why there is a trade market - because GMs, like us, have different opinions about what’s valuable. Btw, how are the Marlins doing this year?

Didn’t have the pitching last year. So, it’s not apples to apples. The point is that he played with energy and heart every AB. And yes, if we had him at the top of the lineup this year, getting on base at over 0.425 clip, probably more of our hitters would be doing better and, yes, we would be winning more games. But yes, you are correct. It’s over. My comment was just being sarcastic and pissy.

Good comments - couple of responses: #5. This team badly needs Arraez for many reasons. Might not have predicted 0.400, but 0.350 for sure. If he stays healthy, he’s an all-star more years than not. Lopez is a solid #3 starter with stretches as a #2 and #4. That is not a good deal. But what makes it worse is that the FO compounded their stupidity by forcing this trade after the Mahle disaster (and their inability to develop trustworthy in house starters). #4. Disagree. Dyson was supposed to be a key short term cog for a late season pennant run. It doesn’t matter that the moonshots the Giants got didn’t eventually pan out. What matters is we got less than nothing out of Dyson. #3. Disagree. See Dyson above. Lopez did little last year and, although we are cheering hard for him, we might not get much more in the future. Baltimore sold high; we sold our assets low. #2. Agree with your assessment more or less. But did the trade of Rooker precipitate the ridiculous signing of Gallo in even a small way? Probably not, but if it did, this trade looks worse. #1. No way to sugar coat this disaster. Not only was it ill conceived, but the results are horrible. Also, Mahle’s complete lack of reliability entering the season was the primary factor for the FO feeling the need to replace him and ditch Arraez in doing so (as they doubled down on starter strength coupled home run production as the key planks of the ‘23 campaign).

Pablo Lopez is Better than His ERA
Nashvilletwin replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sorry, I meant as valuable as Arraez. I made the edit above. Having said that, it’s an interesting question of whether one would trade Ober for Lopez straight up (considering cost of course). At the moment, I’d probably stick with Lopez. -
Pablo Lopez is Better than His ERA
Nashvilletwin replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have to agree - he’s probably been behind Ober. But still very solid. I like him and he’s a really good pitcher. But, assuming health for both players, he’s not as valuable - both overall and specifically/more importantly to this Twin’s ball club/franchise as Arraez. Sorry, my earlier version left out the Arraez part. -
Missed the game, just saw the box score and scoring summary. I’m wondering if Ryan was somehow tipping his pitches - five dingers and a triple in two innings, really? Also, is Correa the new king of the rally killing double play? He’s getting very adept at it.

Your points are very valid. Bassit is probably the one I most wanted over the winter. Having said that, there is still a market for other tradable starters. Someone smarter than I, and you are respectfully are among those, could identify who those might have been. The gist of my comment, though, is that the saved cash plus those two players plus possibly other assets might have been utilized differently without having to move our best player, fan favorite and overall spark plug (btw, who is likely the biggest reason for the Marlins complete turnaround and being 11 games over .500). The trade for Lopez (I like Lopez a lot, but have the under on Salas and the other lottery prospect) first and foremost was precipitated by the lack of faith in Mahle and Maeda being able to soak up innings. So the trade for Mahle was the key precipitator. Not moving Kepler and the signing of Gallo just contributed to the inability to consider other alternatives to shore up an increasingly evident risky rotation.

Rocco is clearly a true baseball savant/professional - there is no doubt about that. However, today’s “style” of play (particularly in the later innings) has not been the norm for this team in quite some time. That was my point (albeit, I admit, sarcastic). For one reason or another, Rocco seems to be mixing things up a bit more. Who knows why - maybe he’s just matching the style of play more to the true talents his team possesses vs. those he thought he had. Like I said, any reason is fine as it produced a win and several innings of fun baseball to watch.

Wallner or Larnach may or may not have made that nice catch that Gallo did. We don’t know. But, perhaps, maybe Wallner or Larnach would’ve produced at the plate (unlike Gallo).

Imagine that - put the ball in play, run the bases aggressively, use the bunt and other “move the runners over” tactics, field the ball well, don’t walk too many opposing batters (especially late in the game), AND WIN. Why didn’t we all think of this before? Looks like Rocco is either finally waking up or worried about his job. Either reason is just fine…….

Good, now maybe we can trade him for the bucket of balls we seemingly haven’t been able to get for the past 9 months. Wallner and Larnach have nothing left to prove in St. Paul. Along with Miranda, I’d be begging to be traded if I were them. It’s time to fish or cut bait and let those three get their major league careers started with a team willing to show the confidence, patience and commitment they need and deserve.

It’s the second derivative of the FO’s moves that really hurt. Trading Kepler and not signing Gallo would’ve opened up the cash to acquire another starter to fill the void caused by the disastrous trade for the injured Mahle (whom some of us TDers predicted never would be an effective innings eater given his pre trade medicals). Instead we were idiotically “forced” into trading Arraez for Lopez. It’s laughable to think how much better off this team would be with Arraez playing 1B every day, Kiriloff, Larnach and Wallner as our corner OFs, and the $ savings from Kepler and Gallo, plus the retained trade capital of Steer and CES, utilized in a different way to bolster the rotation. Talk about squandering scarce resources….our FO really outdoes itself in that regard.
