2001 had some of the most fun regular season games I've ever watched as a baseball fan. What sticks out to me is that the young Twins went toe to toe with the big, bad Yankees and took 2 out of 3 in each series with lockdown pitching, both out of the rotation and the bullpen. Even the fans showed they had good arms on one occasion! The other thing that sticks out is that instead of trading prospects for established players to fortify a roster, Terry Ryan kept creating one hole to fill another. I've heard the rumors that he thought he had Shannon Stewart to replace Lawton. Obviously he didn't and we missed Lawton much more than we gained by acquiring Reed. And trading a young and promising starter like Redman for a closer is unexplainable. Fun fact about Todd Jones. I have a number of 2001 games on VHS and when I watched them maybe around 2010 or so, the Twins were playing the Tigers and Dick was talking about the Tigers trying to unload veterans at the trade deadline and mused that Detroit would be hard-pressed to find someone who would take Jones off their hands. In retrospect, I remember that comment because I always like to point out the ridiculous things Dick says during the telecast and this was obviously a terrible trade.
