  1. This juggernaut squad was 55-55 on August 5th 2021. After some, ahem, drastic roster moves they went 33-18, won a World Series, then won 101 games and are on pace to do it again. It’s largely the same group this year with a new catcher who’s acquisition was made possible by being successful. Olsen for Freeman is a wash. It’s a weird game. It’s weird that we are forever tied to the Braves. It’ll be real weird if things clicked in Minnesota in a similar fashion. The ingredients are there, the dough needed punched down so it can rise again. Happy Friday
  2. Also no, but in italics. I'm all for stocking up on shortstops but start that in the 2nd round. He's not a top 5 type in any ranking I've seen. I'd rather take a swing at Dollander if they are taking a diversion. This pick is for a cornerstone player.
  3. I think this is a very important note. A coach can't turn a bad player into an all star generally but they can ruin a star. A bad game plan when the margins are milliseconds is everything. Too much data would play right into that, by the time a hitter gets to the plate he can't be thinking about 13 things. A good coach can simplify the message into actionable steps. Overthinking at the plate is a recipe for disaster.
  4. Last 4 years is a snapshot? OPS+ accounts for the factors you mentioned. I would also counter that those numbers include time playing injured when he shouldn't have been.
  5. 2010 was probably the best of that group and it also featured such luminaries Drew Butera, Ben Revere, Brendan Harris and Matt Tolbert on the 40 man.
  6. That's not the proper comparison. His career OPS+ includes some pretty ugly numbers at the beginning. Last 4 years, 115, 125, 171 and 133. At 98 now is basically falling off a cliff.
  7. My friend, you have 12 posts. Forgive us if we missed one.
  8. And two months ago we all knew that Tito's bloop troop would get it together and here we are. Nobody feels that way about a Rocco team.
  9. There are ways to tacitly admit Popkins isn't getting it done without throwing him overboard or making a big scene. It's also dumb to fire someone who is 33 and had enough promise to get the job in the first place at such a young age. Honestly it should be expected that he has some adjustments to make as he figures out what the heck hes doing in this job. This is where Molly comes in. Throw him a million bucks for the rest of the year as a special assistant/bench coach and assign him to Popkins. Popkins remains hitting coach but Molly coaches Popkins (and a sounding board for Rocco). Molly gets a nice paycheck and back around the game but not full time. He might like it, and the wall was broken in spring training. It feels like Popkins is the darling because of his technical hitting knowledge but probably lacks the art and feel. Engineer vs artist mindset, Molly can fill that in without butting up against Rocco. It also fills a gap I believe they have had in the coaching staff since Derek Shelton left. Who's representing the old school in these meetings? There has to be a voice to simplify things when the data boys get out over their skis. To much data on the brain could really screw up a hitters approach.
  10. Appreciate the detailed answer. I would probably agree that on a top three basis there are a few years where the top three are better but I was looking at the roster as a whole. That 69 team also with Reese, Cardenas and Tovar was pretty beastly, but well before my personal time. I would bet the current volume of talent on this years team look very good in comparison to most years though. Just among hitters on the 40 man roster, there are 9 guys who are 1st or 2nd round picks including 2 #1 overall. Every single one, save maybe Jeffers if I'm generous, is performing well under expectations and career norms. And not just slightly poor, objectively horrible. Many reasons for sure, but I'm not sure how we can see the roster construction being the reason for poor performance. The FO might have blame but its not about who is here, other than Kepler, we all agree on that.
  11. Strong statement with that user name, I like it. I don't think the technical aspects are all on him, but I believe those people work for him so he owns it. As we don't really know any reporting structure or assignment of duties all we can go on is that Rocco owns on field product. The last line is savagely honest, most people don't even realize they do that.
  12. Fair, same question.
  13. Not remotely what I asked, it’s still up there. Read it again.
  14. And this is the key. Analytics is not about simply having data, it’s knowing which data to use in a given situation. The OP listed a few good sources of other data points that a manager would use to know which stat cast inputs to apply. As a manager in business gets more senior this is the skill that is most valuable for success. Seeing the field and knowing what is important is everything. With our team, the hitters seem to be focused on the wrong thing and we see what happens. I like the old school examples in the article. Here’s one I like to use. “Pitching defense and the 3-run home run.” Isn’t very different from what all the modern analytics tell us. That was in the 60s. It was just derived from different data sources. Get guys on base and get a big hit has been the core of baseball since the beginning but the moneyball era acts like they discovered it. It’s just been different presentations of the same thing for 100 years. Sometimes I think Rocco forgets that. Yes, the data is better and it can better inform the decisions but it should not override what your eye and experience see and know, it just informs it.
  15. What 40 man roster was more talented in your Twins fandom? Be specific.
  16. I would have liked to see a replay, I thought it hit something and was a foul ball
  17. Stealing a base. We just talked about more small ball.
  18. It's his turn in the order? Whats the the question here?
  19. That Taylor AB was an obvious bunt. If Gallo makes contact maybe we get a sac fly. Instead strike out on 3 pitches, then again.
  20. On the bright side, only 4 runs there is kinda limiting the damage.
  21. This is certainly a gap they need to close while they still can. For a relatively small cost they can sign some higher level prospects than the draft. This is one of those areas where a few hundred thousand dollars can go a long way. Get college hitters in the draft and focus more on signing international pitching prospects.
  22. Rooker as well but the point is more that this FO had them for several years and parted with them. What they did with each for development is a much finer hair than I'm trying to split.
