I was expecting this series to be tough, and had very low expectations for the Bundy/Cole matchup, so it's pretty easy for me to focus on the silver lining here. I think it's a very good sign for the Twins' future that the offense was able to dismantle Cole, Cortes, and Taillon. With a couple of better bullpen pieces and some of our better starters healthy, these games were all winnable.

Is Austin Martin Minnesota’s Best Trade Chip?
Unwinder replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's not the most valuable trade chip, he's just the best balance between value and expendability. -
A frustrating loss, but at least we didn't blow out the bullpen too much more...

Based on chatter I'm seeing from Royals fans it looks like their bullpen is beat up too, predicting another shootout tomorrow.

(Bursts in and starts commenting without checking what sport we're talking about here) Losing a winnable game to a lousy team bodes very, very ill for our playoff chances. (Somebody points at the main photo at the top of the article which clearly depicts baseball) Ah, nevermind.

Josh Donaldson Trade Paying Dividends
Unwinder replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I try to give credit where credit's due. Donaldson was right about sticky substances and I'm glad he spoke up and was annoying about them. That said, I've never met the guy, but I always thought it was misguided to value Donaldson for his "fire." "Fire" on its own is not useful. I've seen instances of Donaldson getting mad at other players for playing badly, but I've never seen any evidence that it helped them play better. I've seen Donaldson's role on the team compared to that of Patrick Beverly on the Timberwolves. Pat Bev is abrasive and outspoken like Donaldson, but he also has his teammates' trust and knows how to bring out the best in them. Maybe Donaldson has that ability, but I haven't seen it, and I think it's a lot more likely that his brand of "fire" just stresses everyone out.- 67 replies

An (Over) Analysis of Royce Lewis' Hitting Numbers
Unwinder replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I very much enjoy all the analytics. While you obviously need to be careful not to overrate a player based on one esoteric data point, I think they're helpful to me in understanding how different players' skills at the plate differ, and what their strengths and weaknesses are as hitters. Sorry, but what's ruining baseball for you really brings it to life for me. -
I assume our young pitchers are on innings limits? I think they should keep Smeltzer up and use him for a while. Get what we can out of him while he's hot, and save some wear and tear on the other starters.

The Twins' 3 Biggest Weaknesses
Unwinder replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arraez is exactly the kind of guy you want to plug in at first base: A very good bat whose defense can be a liability elsewhere. Doesn't matter in the game's overall math that his calling card is getting on base instead of power. I'm fine with him holding down the fort and waiting to see if Miranda or Kirilloff pops off, especially if Lewis looks like he might spend some time at third base. Larnach will be back soon for Left Field, and Celestino has been an excellent fourth OF. I am more than happy with the performance of our young starting pitchers, but I have no idea how many innings they can reasonably cover this year. This might be solvable by the next wave coming up through the pipeline. I really have no idea. It would not hurt at all to get some insurance here.- 56 replies

Huh, I wonder what's going on with Kiriloff. That's a very dramatic turnaround! Did his wrist just suddenly get better? Did he revamp his swing overnight? Is AAA pitching just that much easier for him to hit than MLB pitching?

I feel as good about this loss as I can feel about a blowout loss. Plenty of baserunners, just need to start sealing the deal next time.

I was SLIGHTLY more there for Miranda's Target Field debut than for Royce, but I was excited enough to drive down and buy a ticket at the box office in the 4th inning after I finished making dinner. It was a fun one!

Twins 4, A's 3: Bullpen Completes Sweep of Oakland
Unwinder replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was going to comment that I'm really apprehensive about all these one-run wins that could've easily gone the other way, especially against teams like the Athletics, but then I thought about the roster. Correa's out, Buxton's out, Arraez is out, Larnach's out, Garlick's out, and Sano is out (on top of being ineffective). It's pretty great that with all of these guys gone, the Twins have the depth to stay in close games.- 40 replies

Carlos Correa Avoids Broken Finger, Injured List

Excellent. Now we can enjoy Royce's debut without a dark cloud hanging over it. Win-win. -
We were due, and I don't mind losing one here and there. I hope Bundy bounces back though.

Let's Cut Miguel Sanó Some Slack

As a regular person who is not a professional athlete, the amount of money Correa is likely to make is imaginary to me anyway. If I were him, I'd tell myself I was set for life no matter what happens, and just sign with a team I knew I'd enjoy playing with for ten years. On the other hand, a ten-year contract is very long. Even if Correa does love Buxton, Falvey, Rocco et all as much as he says he does, if he gets the contract he wants, he has a good chance of outlasting all of them. Who knows if he'll like the next front office, the next manager, his future teammates, etc? From this perspective, he's better off getting all the money he can (or at least picking someplace where he likes the climate), because liking the team is a crapshoot over such a long period. And then on the other hand, for someone who has millions of dollars in their bank account, there really is a difference between getting $325 million and whatever lowball offer the Twins are likely to make.

Is Byron Buxton Baseball's Best Player?
Unwinder replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's too soon this year to be sure, and he hasn't had a full season playing like this, but I'm only bringing up those factors to pretend I'm evaluating him objectively and not getting carried away in the sheer joy of the moment. Yes, of course he is the best player.- 42 replies
