  1. I notice we're starting to flirt with calling Joe Ryan an ace
  2. The front office DID address the bullpen over the offseason. By addressing the starting rotation. In a perfect world, starters who can cover more innings mean you don't need so many bullpen arms to perform, and Rocco can pick and choose when he uses a guy like Pagan. Great under ideal circumstances. Runs into trouble when you go deep into extra innings and/or pull your starter early and/or get no run support and/or start to rack up injuries among the good relievers. So, you know, the real world.
  3. This year so far "struggling name-brand pitcher" is scarier to me than "ace."
  4. Predicting a cheap Paddack-style extension.
  5. I feel like Julien's bedroom eyes gotta make him a top prospect.
  6. Just dropping by to chime in and verify that I have been avoiding game threads due to negativity too. It's been about as fun as reading the replies when the Twins Twitter account posts the final score after a loss.
  7. That top slot has truly been up for grabs since Astudillo went to Japan.
  8. It's time to sign Miguel Sano. (ducks and then runs away laughing)
  9. Maggi received a standing ovation when he came out, could've been our moment!* Not giving Maggi a taste of his cup of coffee is maybe my biggest beef with Rocco. I went to a lot of Saints games that year and he was really good. Wanted to see him get that with us. *And if we had let him play in 2021 like we should have, he wouldn't have been dinged by the pitch clock for basking in the moment.
  10. I feel like we've got a problem here with the definition of "core-4" I think Cody meant it in the sense of "the four best players who are locked down for a few years" and a lot of commenters here are taking it to mean "the only four good players on the team."
  11. Anecdotally, I know people from Canada who follow the Blue Jays closely but live nearer to Montreal than Toronto, I think it's very possible that the success and popularity of the Jays has increased support for another Canadian team (from what I've read, part of the problem with the Expos was that they were... not good?).
  12. I'm reasonably happy with a series split at Yankee Stadium. Let's bury the Yankees when they come to Target Field though, please.
  13. Sorry to triple-post here, but from everything I've heard, I suspect Vasquez deserves some credit. From what I've heard, he's really good at working with the pitchers, saw a story somewhere saying that he helped get Ryan back on track after that grand slam.
  14. I like position players pitching, I realize it's not a competitive choice in the moment, and what you're seeing in position-player-pitching innings is not really relevant to the game, but it offers fans an interesting new narrative to follow in the final innings of a blowout when the question of who's going to win has already been settled. It's like, yes, we've already lost the game of baseball, but for those of you who want to stick around, how about a nice game of what-the-hell-is-going-to-happen-with-the-position-player-pitching?
  15. Pinstripes are ours now. That's our thing. Yankees are no longer the pinstripe team.
  16. The pageantry around Duran's entrance is really fun, but I need to know, are they still trying to get people to call him Durantula?
  17. Sounds like a watchable game

    Regional Blackout

  19. Obviously too different, but for the sake of making up a variant game, I'd say this actually actually tacks on a lot of inaction by increasing the frequency of inning changes and batter walk-ups. I say nine innings, nine outs per inning, and if the next batter isn't already in the box by the time the pitcher has the ball back in his hand, the pitcher is free to throw a strike over the plate without him. Tack on more innings if it's still too short.
  20. I want Kenta to be OK, but it sure does feel good to have Ober as the first line of depth.
  21. I think the main reason fans don't like analytics as a tool for building rosters is that they're generally used for bargain hunting and fans don't like bargain hunting. You don't need analytics to tell you that Aaron Judge is great, and fans would much rather see their team just be the highest bidder for Aaron Judge than get a bargain on a Joey Gallo bounceback that someone's computer said might happen.
  22. I think I disagree? My main reason is that the postseason is the most likely time that a casual, non-fan is going to catch a game, and so assuming a snappier pace of play makes the game more palatable to casual viewers, the playoffs are the most important time to have a pitch clock. Second, I think the pitch clock is probably going to benefit offense since pitchers will not be able to rest up as much between pitches, and I think tilting things a little bit in favor of offense contributes more to the drama of a playoff game than it removes in tension between the batter and pitcher. I also just feel like it devalues regular season games a little bit. If we remove the pitch clock to soak in the drama of the postseason, I feel like we're basically declaring regular-season games dramatically void.
