    Another in a long line of Carlos Correa stories. At least we don't have to read that many Buxton stories anymore. I'm of the opinion we should not, and will not sign him to a long term extension. Remember it was Correa who voided the last two years of his Twins contract. He turned away from 35 million each of the next two years. Apparently that's not enough for him. Yes we all figured he would opt out after one year. Let's face the fact:. The Twins were used by Correa to only improve himself. The Twins, Twins fans, media, were all taken in by his superstar status. He used us for his own benefit. What did the Twins gain by having him here? Not much IMO. The fact is that his offensive stats were rather anemic until September came and the team was out of it. Also he had a great September mainly by beating up on some minor league and unproven pitchers trying to make a name for himself. Correa was brutal in the clutch most of the season. Bottom line for me is it makes no sense to spend so much on one person when there will be little money left to improve the team in many needed areas. What good is it to have a superstar shortstop if your team is budget strapped? More mediocre baseball. Carlos Correa made his decision. He voided the last two years of his contract that made him the highest paid position player. The Twins had him already signed. He said it wasn't good enough. What arrogance. It's time to move on from Carlos.

    Yes I too am happy and totally unsurprised by this common sense move. I agree with a previous poster about how low the standards have become for starting pitchers. It's so sad to see the continued demise of the once great game.

    Last year Pohlad said there was plenty of money to sign both Buxton and Berrios to long term deals. A few days later Berrios was traded. I respect the Pohlad family for keeping the Twins somewhat competitive and giving fans stability in having a major league baseball franchise. Their team payroll is about in the middle of the pack compared to other teams. Maybe increase it some? Yes. Also maybe use what's available more wisely. Throwing all that money to Correa over those many years is foolish if there isn't enough money to pay others. Bottom line is I take everything he says with a big grain of salt.

    What possible good does it do to pay Correa so much that it leaves very little for the many areas of need on this team? Tying up that much money for several years will just maintain our mediocrity. If we continue to find bargain basement pitching in the reclamation pile, again and again, there will be no chance to be a serious consistent contender.

    Yes we've heard that comment about the pohlads never turning us down, many, many, times over the years. Yes they could afford to sign Correa. But should they? Allotting that much money and years to one position, under the Pohlads budget, probably wouldn't allow monies for some of the good players we already have. Also wouldn't allow team to sign anyone else to fill some of the big holes in this Team. I don't think they will sign Correa, not should they.

    Jeffers is just another in the over rated Twins players. He is below average in defense and hasn't proved much consistency in his offense. Let's face the facts:. He wouldn't be on many teams major league roster. We had catching, but the FO created a problem that didn't exist. Now they need a good catcher. Not easy to find.

    Dream big!! Fantasy!! He's not coming here. The Twins don't have the talent to trade back. Most of the prospects we have are just that. Prospects that are over hyped.

    I doubt the Twins will sign any of them. I suspect they will wait until late to sign or acquire any top pitching. That is their pedigree. Wait until the end, sign another reclamation project or two, then try to convince the fans they tried but couldn't sign anyone. It's been happening for years. I don't expect it to change.

    None of those mentioned seemed destined to be anything in MLB much less an ace. If one develops into a solid number 3 or 4 that would be awesome.

    Great article. I would bet on Varland the most. The starting pitching staff, plus those waiting in the wings are kind of shaky at the moment. Gray looks good, Mahle the same. But these guys have injury history so while hope is nice, it's scary to rely on them. Ryan looks pretty solid. I was very impressed with his season. Winder, Ober, are very questionable. Twins need to add one more veteran starting pitcher for 2023. Like last off season twins may be looking for luck. I hope that doesn't mean we will have to do with more bargain basement staff like Archer and Bundy were this year.

    Well with any trade it takes two to tango so to speak. I don't see much value in this for the Brewers. Interesting, well thought out, article. I'm guessing nothing happens here.

    This team needs a lot of upgrades in all areas especially pitching. My guess is the FO won't do much in FA pitching. I like Rodon but figure neither him or any other major FA would come here anyway. With the organizational philosophy of starters going 5 innings we need a solid bullpen. They tell us the last two years were flukes and injuries. Now they are promising a better 2023. If the are relying mostly on the current players I'm afraid next season will be a repeat of the past two.

    The Twins better hope that at least a couple of their young pitchers develop into real major league pitchers or it's going to be a long rebuild with even more boring, unimaginative and poor baseball for us Twins fans. The pitching dumpster overwhelmingly hasn't worked. It's time to change the philosophy. Great article.

    Most of the Twins internal pitching options come with significant risk. They may or may not pan out in 2023. Like pre 2022 too much of hope it works out attitude doomed the staff. We have guys coming back from injuries, some guys who haven't pitched much over the past two- three years, and young prospects who may or not pan out. Relying on questionable prospects is very risky as well. Twins created this mess with their annual dumpster diving for pitchers. Let's see how they work out of it.

    Twins need pitching. Good pitching. The amount of monies being talked about here would leave very little payroll flexibility to improve in other areas. I would be all for signing Correa if I knew we had more payroll to improve the team. I just don't see the twins dipping into expensive free agents long term.

    With next year's rule banning over shifting you are going to need athletic players at shortstop and second. Correa would obviously foot the bill at short. However he's simply too expensive. Tying up that much payroll for one player doesn't leave much for either FA signings or paying arbitration eligible players. I agree you need a balanced roster to be competitive. What good does it do to pay Correa so much that all you are left with is a superstar shortstop on a team that will be .500 or less because there will be not enough payroll monies left over to field a good team? IMO just move on without him. He wasn't going to be here long term anyway.

    To be honest I never heard of him and I follow the Twins closely. My point being first thanks for the well researched article! Secondly, I agree that he perhaps needs to prove, like Miranda did, that he can play ball with the big boys by playing AAA for a season.

    Adding an aging player to play shortstop for the Twins? Interesting concept. This FO has been doing it for years with the pitching staff, so why stop there?

    Just dump pagan. Considering how many games he blew last year, keeping him would send a terrible message to the fans that pay major league prices to watch a minor league team. That trade with San Diego was curious from the start with the timing and knowing Paddock already had one Tommy John surgery. But agreeing to pay Rogers salary on top of getting a couple of stiffs shows very poor judgement by the FO, at least in this case. DUMP PAGAN!!

    The albatross contract I was referring to wasn't Correas one year deal, although twins didn't do much afterward to build a competitive team around him. I was referring to the albatross contract of Donaldson that was mentioned in the article. The article referred to the Donaldson contract as an Albatross due greatly to the dollars involved. Yet the team spent $10 million more for a very good shortstop with nothing more. If the FO had no intention of adding more than Correa then it was a waste of money. I like Correa. I hope he stays for reasonable monies. But the witching will really start when we have a great shortstop getting 25% of salary with just a .500 team around him. I just think he is too expensive for the Twins.

    The Correa saga is getting old we knew he was going to opt out when he signed his deal. We should have realized at that point that we would all be used by Carlos. His only reason to be here was to manipulate everyone for his own benefit. It's been astounding how we bought into his line of how he loves Minnesota and the Twins. How self serving can you get? How gullable us fans are. We are supposed to feel grateful just for his presence. He's a good shortstop who is only looking out for himself yet we fell for him hook, line, and sinker. To the same people that hope the Twins pay him a market value contract of over 300 million:. You will be amongst the first to complain when the Twins say they don't have any more payroll flexibility. Could we go from one "albatross" contract to another? Time will tell.

    Yes the bar to play on the Twins is getting low. .200 hitters considered good major league talent? Let's get serious here. Jeffers would be lucky to be a backup on most major league teams. As for the ball and strike umpiring and pitch framing:. Watching catchers move their glove several inches to try to get a call is so sophomoric. The umpires call it as it's crossing the plate. We just have very poor home plate umpiring. In fact the framing is strange. Wouldn't it seem more likely that on a close pitch if the catcher moved it into the strike zone that an umpire would think it must have been a ball. I think the umpires are just that poor and very inconsistent.

    Good for Smeltzer. I'm hoping he finds a real major league team with real coaches and a common sense plan to develop a major league roster. It sure seems to be lacking in Minnesota. Where else can you have two terrible back to back seasons and each time shrug your shoulders and say it was bad luck and injuries? This FO loves to take bows for the moves they make but criticism is not allowed. It violates the plan.
