  1. My biggest concern at this point is SP depth. We know Paddack will have an innings limit, Ober has had health issues, Varland is still green, and it seems the league is starting to catch up to Ryan. The other hole is 1st base, due to AK's inability to stay healthy. CF is passable even if Buxton is a no go (as at some point he will be) with Castro and Gordon, and IMO, Martin. A trade is probably the way they need to go for a starter, and a low end FA should be able to cover 1st. I would seriously think about moving Polo or Julian to 1st, though Polo is probably the top trade chip.
  2. I agree that they planned on losing Gray and probably Maeda, though I think they dropped the ball on Maeda. what he got from Detroit will be a bargain unless he crashes and burns. I don't think they get Burnes, but it would be great if they could get him and keep him. I'm not so sure trading away one of the best trade chips for RP is the way to go here. Rather use that for a starter.
  3. Nothing against Provus, but I'm really going to miss Dick. He has been involved with the Twins for so long, he knew 1st hand so many little facts that were fun to listen to. I keep hearing people tell me he was forced into retirement. If that's the case, then shame on you Twins!! Having been a fan since '61, I've heard a lot of play by play guys. Dick rates at the top with Herb Carneal!
  4. IMO other teams just saw a couple of good starters available and signed them. Detroit got a bargain which I'm really surprised the Twins didn't match or beat. I really don't know what Cincy saw in Pagan to offer him closers money, but I'm sure the Twins didn't have any intention on spending anywhere near that much in the pen.
  5. IMO that's more then the Twins will spend. I think any good starter will come via trade.
  6. I think MLB is leaning more towards the challenge system then robo-umps.
  7. I have been saying all along that this rotation as is should be good enough to win the division. Adding another 4-5 pitcher would only be for backup should someone go down. I don't count on Paddock for more than 150 innings, and we know that Ober is a concern as far as IP go. Ryan needs to step up a bit in his 3rd full season also. I would much prefer a 2-3 type pitcher, but I think that will be a trade if possible. I really can't see this FO spending more than about 10 mil for another starter.
  8. I would think he is on the table. But it had better be another very good young pitcher with a few years of control. The Lopez trade was one of the best this FO has made. If they can pull off another similar trade, just about anyone should be on the table.
  9. Correa is a pro's pro. I'm more concerned about Buxton.
  10. Maybe Johnston, but I doubt he will still be there when the Twins get their turn.
  11. You may be right, but I don't see the Twins spending that much this winter. I figure they will pick up 1 high 4, low 3 type, but I just don't see them spending that much with all the fuss about reducing payroll.
  12. IMO its clear that he will be a starter to start this year, regardless who the Twins may obtain in a trade. I think he may profile better in the pen, but he will be needed either as a 5th starter or reliable depth, at least for the 1st few months. If some of the other kids like SWR or Winder etc.. show they have what it takes to start, maybe then convert him.
  13. I hope you're wrong. I do think Paddack can be a solid #2. I'm not saying he will be a Cy Young candidate like Gray, just a guy to plug the hole .
  14. I agree that this rotation should be better than competitive. I think Paddack can plug the hole left by Gray, and Varland can be a good 4 or 5 starter. What concerns me is the lack of depth. We can bet on Paddock having an innings limit, and almost certainly will have injuries at some point. So who covers those spots? Winder? SWR? Headrick? I still think, even with the present staff, they should be good enough to win the division. But saying that, they will surly need some depth.
  15. I think it would take a heck of return if any of those mentioned above are traded.
  16. I don't know if he gets in 1st time, but he certainly deserves too.
  17. I think it was a mistake. 12 mil per year is not much in todays market. Looks like they plan on going with Varland. May make a trade, but it seems that this FO waits as long as they can, and so often get reclamation projects. At least they had a year of a top notch rotation. I wonder if they will ever come close again.
  18. I agree with most of what you said. But, I do think Lopez is a #1 and Paddack a #2. Yes you are right that Paddack will have some sort of innings limit. Last season Ober pitched like a #3, if he stays healthy, and Ryan and Varland are #4's I believe. They have SWR and Headrick and Festa for spot starts down in St. Paul. That's where things are a little shaky IMO. That's why if they can get a starter like Maeda in the 10 mil plus incentives range I feel this team will be very competitive. Correa will hit better this year, the 3 rookies have more time in, IMO Miranda will make some noise if healthy. I'd like to see them keep Farmer, but I'm thinking he will be traded to trim payroll. Biggest wild card is Buxton. If he can't play in the field he has little to no value at DH, and in reality, last season clogged up a valuable spot in the lineup.
  19. Cutting out Gallo's salary is a reduction, as is losing Gray and his salary. Now it comes down to what to do about replacing Gray? Do they count on Varland with guys like SWR and Festa and Headrick in reserve in St. Paul? As is, w/o any new faces I think they win the division again. That said, I would feel more confident if they could re-sign Maeda. I haven't seen anywhere what he is asking, has anyone else?
  20. They won't give him away. Depends on who is looking for a LH outfielder and what they have to offer. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is here on opening day, but if so, I would be surprised if he survives the trade deadline. Of course, injuries happen and roster building has to take that into acct.
  21. Lopez was a high 3 low 2 with good to great stuff. Always considered a potential ace if he could stay healthy.
  22. I think Varland, Fiesta, and even SWR have higher ceilings.
  23. IMO this isn't the guy to go after. He's not in the same tier as Lopez and other than 1 good season, has been a 4-5 starter. I'd rather give our own guys the chance, and see where things are mid season.
