Jeff Mathis: Could he become a Twins catching coach?
Brandon commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
In the late 1990s to 2000, the Twins developed many C that several started for other teams, and a few were backups. But I think I remember counting 6 or 7 C developed over a 5 year period. (David Nilsson, Javier Valentin Rob Bowen, Damien Miller, Chad Moeller, and AJ Pierzynski These guys all came up between 1997 and 2000). Then we developed Mayer and Wilson Ramos and Butters (Butera he actually came over as a prospect when we traded Luis Castillo to the Mets I think). It would be nice to get back to that. It did seem like we were close with Garver, Jeffers, Revordt, and now Carmago. But it appears there is not much else on the farm at this time. -
This is what I dont get, if Castro is good enough defensively at CF, why do we need another CF backup. Castro had a .750 OPS and stole 33 bases. Gordon then Kepler on the bench/ backup should be more then enough.

I think as a team player he should be open to some CF. Not 80 games maybe 10-20. I think we have plenty of in-house players for CF but for those must win games where we want maximum offense he could play CF and let Larnarch and Wallner start. But I think Larnarch needs to show he can hit consistently before asking Kepler to move over. I was wondering if Lee could handle CF and play that and some IF in a call up to see what he can do.

we have seen the Twins find gems for their pen this way too many times now not to be upset at a move like this. if you are not expecting this type of move by now you are out of touch with reality. What I wonder is if the Twins are now happy with their bullpen depth or will they sign one more player to take a chance on?

An Under-the-Radar Center Field Trade Target
Brandon replied to Adam Friedman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A perfect trade scenario of Farmer for Slater. Both will be free agents next offseason. But I think 🤔 Buxton will play 90-120 games there and the rest will be in house candidates. Castro, Gordon, or Austin Martin.- 27 replies

5 Gifts for the Twins in 2024
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
🎁 #6 no sophomore slumps 🎁 #7 return to health and form for both Killeroff and Miranda. 🎁 #8 Vazquez finds his bat and hits next year at a 105+ OPS rate. 🎁 #9 Julien’s glove makes a run for a gold glove or atleast becomes a good asset. 🎁 #10 The only reason I can see Varland in the rotation instead of the bullpen is I can see him pitching 180 innings a season without getting hurt so he does that with an ERA below 4.00. 🎁 #11 The Twins find another bullpen stud on a minor league contract. 🎁 #12 We find a willing trade partner to get us the playoff starter we need without giving up too many prospects or costing us players on the team we need. Now we have the 12 Days of Christmas 🎄 covered.- 24 replies

There's a player that I think would be a nice 2024 addition.
Brandon replied to Riverbrian's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The high strikeouts are ok if the rest of the AB lead to things that produce runs. Meneses doesn't walk much. many with high strikeouts do walk a lot and have a high on base percentage as a result. Normally I would agree that we strike out too much as a team, but we did tie for the AL lead in HRs and was pretty highly ranked in the league in offense the second half as well. I am not justifying the strikeouts as ok but there is validity to what the Twins brass is doing with assembling our offense. -
Can Twins Rookies Avoid the Regression Bug?
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m going to be the contrarian and say Wallner hits 40 HRs next season and OPS over .980 while Lewis and Julien slump back about .20 too .30 OPS points off of this year’s total.- 38 replies

How You Can Spur the Twins into Action

Whatever you’re doing Randball Stu it’s working…… sort of. Back to back days of transactions. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/twins-sign-a-j-alexy-to-minor-league-deal.html -
What Defines Success for Byron Buxton in 2024?
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
2 WAR is what he is getting paid for so 3.0 WAR is a better starting point for success. If he can hit 6. WAR even better. As far as playing goes we’ll start with 90 games in CF and 20 at DH and go up from there. I would like to see him magically play 120 maybe 125 in CF and 20 give or take at DH.. -
The Dylan Bundys of the World
Brandon replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don’t understand why everyone hates the Bundy signing so much. I mean at the time we were hoping for a top of the rotation arm, but Bundy was exactly what we paid him to be. He was a competent 4th starter who went 8-8 and led the staff in innings pitched. He was also clearly on his last leg of his career. But he only cost 4 million plus a 1 million buyout of his option. Archer pitched ok except he couldn’t get past the 4th inning. The Twins should’ve moved Archer to the pen mid season. JA Happ was ok until his last 3 starts. I mean he wasn’t a third starter we were hoping for more of a fifth starter but then the wheels came off and we were lucky to get something for him at the deadline. Grant who did what Happ and Shoemaker couldn’t. He was ok in the rotation. The worst part about Shoemaker is the Twins had to keep him in the rotation because their 6,7,8 and 9th starters were all hurt. Another free agent starter the Twins signed was Odorizzi when he accepted the QO from the Twins. Martin and Hill were fine signing’s remember the price point. some advice. If the Twins sign a starter for 8 million or less you should expect 5th starter results then be surprised if the Twins unlock something and we get more. Everyone else does. That’s why the pitcher is so cheap.- 19 replies

How You Can Spur the Twins into Action
Brandon replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Satire escapes you, doesn't it? The sad part about my satirical comment is that it is true .... -
from what I remember the Twins had 3 or 4 good starters and Reed completed the rotation while Lawton was one of their best hitters that year and the Twins sorely needed offense. and trading Lawton killed the offense. but Reed was ok the rest of that year and good the next and terrible after that. I think Reed wasn't liked because he did what was in his best interest and crossed the picket line during the strike in 1995 and was a replacement player.

Sounds like you expect the Twins supplemental draft pick that they get for losing Gray to be a really good player for the Twins who eventually gets traded for three prospects where 2 pan out and one of them becomes a future all star and eventually getting traded for a prospect and future hall of famer......

How You Can Spur the Twins into Action
Brandon replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins just made their biggest offseason move yet. They signed Nico Goodrum to a minor league deal. Way to go Randball Stu. Twins Sign Niko Goodrum To Minor League Deal - MLB Trade Rumors -
I was on board with this article until the author said the window of contention opened in 2019 and is closing. We currently have a new team since then. There are only 3 players on this team now from that year and 2 of them are on the trade block. I do like the idea of signing Ryu from Toronto and also note that if/when he gets hurt Texas will have 3 starters coming back from injury and we could probably trade with them for a starter if needed.

The book on the Mahle trade has closed on the Twins side. That is why the trade is being evaluated. There are no more branches on this side of the deal. The other side of the deal already has more value and likely so much more projected on the way. Hence the evaluation which is now legit. And it will update to be either less bad or even worse than what people think now. There is no way around it. This trade turned out bad for the Twins. While at the time of the trade it didn’t look good in that we knew we overpaid for Mahle with the talent we gave up. We gave up duplicate talent. Meaning the players we gave up were blocked by other young players. So the trade looked to be good for the Twins to get a #2 starter for prospects. My analysis of the trade is it was a bad one but I’m not mad at the front office for going for it. I hope they do this trade type of trade again.

Lawton for Reed wasn’t a bad trade. What puts it in this category is we traded from a position of need for a position of need but less need and Terry Ryan was unable or unw To do the second trade that was supposed to occur to replace Lawton.

Should the Twins Restock the Garv Sauce?
Brandon replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Garver and am not opposed to signing him. I do think a good power bat for the middle of the order is not a bad idea. I think the Twins do not want to commit more money to 2025 though. How about JD Martinez on a 1 year contract for the same 12-13 million. I don't know if he can get 2 years or not at his age. I would be fine with either. I am just throwing another option out there. But to be clear the main objective for the offseason is to get a playoff caliber starting pitcher. -
What Could a Corbin Burnes Trade Look Like?
Brandon replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Trading Burnes is not a win now move for the Brewers. Getting Polanco is a good start. But wouldn’t Milwaukee also want a decent starter. Maybe make it a 3 team deal where Milwaukee sends some of their prospects and Minnesota includes some too and Minnesota gets Burnes, Milwaukee get Polanco and Dylan Cease and Chicago gets several good prospects. I don’t know what prospects Chicago wants from us or Milwaukee but I think that’s how the trade would make sense for them. That would extend their window for 2 seasons instead of just one. Chicago would want good prospects too. They don’t want to feel like they helped the Twins win.- 91 replies

Revisiting the Final Inning of the 2023 Season
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Presley was going to be a free agent anyways and would likely signed with Houston anyways since he is from there. Atleast we have Alcala from that trade. Do we still have Celestino? We did get some use from him too. That trade was OK . Especially if Alcala has a good next couple of years.
