I expect the Twins to sign either Ryu or Martinez. There are still many players without contracts and fewer teams left to sign them. I don’t remember the names of the other starters available still.
If the ask was Polanco and Raya for Burnes then someone in the front office should be fired for not jumping on that trade. If the money was an issue then including another prospect for cash or an include a salary like Farmer or Castro would offset any increase in payroll. That would be an all in go for it kind of move to say we are going for it. The extra 50,00-100,000 tickets sold will help offset the salary difference too.
We traded for Odorizzi towards the end of the offseason and for some reason no one was competing with us
We got Maeda cause the Dodgers had too many starting pitchers and we were going to be part of a three team trade
we got Sony Gray because Cincinnati was cutting costs and we gave a good prospect
Paddack is injury prone and coming off a down season
Lopez we just got lucky that the Marlins had extra starters and needed offense.
These deals are all timing as any team could have swooped in and made better offers. We didn’t lose any of these trades. It was all about timing.
and a competitive round draft pick. that feels light unless they think the SS Ortiz is likely to be a star. I like Minnesota's return for Polanco better.
I agree and using the whole body of work in a small 700 AB sample where he was injured half the time. I m sure the 22 HRs in 700 AB where the player is injured a good portion is indicative of how he will play when healthy. I can see the line being we need a healthy 1B or DH if he can’t play in the field. But we need a full season out of him as he gets more expensive.
Things we need for the lineup. back up 1B, big time power hitter or on base machine works too, good defensive OF that hits RH.
I would hope an impact bat like JD Martinez would be an option if he isn't too expensive on a 1 year deal. 13-15 million would be my preference.
Next would be a 1B/DH platoon part time bat. Solano or Votto or Carlos Santana or Cron
Then an OF if there is money left over. A good defensive OF and right handed hitter. Taylor or Duvall or maybe Pham.
If we dont sign a soler or Martinez we could possibly sign 2 of the others.
Could we sign JD Martinez to play DH and platoon 1B with Killeroff? If we have the financial flexibility it would definitely help to have a bat like his on a 1-year deal.
Losing Gray and Meada to free agency made the team worse. This trade gave us a higher floor depth starter, so we now have 6 starters. We got another reliever. (We have lots of relievers now it's like they grow on trees). added depth on the farm system (this could come in handy at the trade deadline when we get the playoff starter we need in a trade) and cash for more flexibility to make more moves. I see this trade as increasing the Twins flexibility to have more depth and tradeable assets to make the deal for the starter we need for the playoffs. it gives our rotation a floor for the present time as well.
He was the Mariners third best prospect on MLB.com Mariners Top Prospects | MLB.com I think he would slot 4th or 5th if I am not mistaken in Minnesota.
Is DeSclafani any better then Varland? I get that we now have more depth for our rotation and he is at worst Bundy if he has a bad year or he can be a solid #3 type starter and he could be either.
I was afraid we would somehow end up with DeSclafani. similar salaries. I see Seattle threw in a reliever and a good OF prospect and a lotto ticket pitching prospect and I saw cash is involved too. so the Twins are probably getting a little to offset the salaries of DeSclafani and Polanco. The reliever was good for a full season for the first time at 32. so lets hope we get a few more from him.
I can see Winder as our 7th reliever all year. 70 innings around a 3.8 - 4.2 ERA and close to a strike out per inning.
The Wild Card is Canterino. Is he a reliever or 6th starter. how many innings will he get. Will his arm fall off or could he win 10 games in the rotation with an ERA below 3.00?
I would love to see another pitcher put it all together and have a Brock like rise from nowhere.
Who is on 1rst? no not the skit either. Killeroff? Miranda? Julien? Polanco? Velazquez? Severino? Severino cost the Twins 2.5 million to sign. If he earns the opportunity which he seems close at this point. I expect him to be up. Miranda is part of the previous regime if I am not mistaken.
