While it’s about the money it’s also about respect and the Mets disrespected him as did the Giants and if I had a no trade clause to a team with bigger pockets that is willing to trade for me , I try to tack on more guaranteed money to accept the trade. I would shoot for two or three of those option years to be restructured as guaranteed at 30 million or so

So what does Correa get to waive his no trade clause? He will be in a position to make that demand. He probably wants those option years restructured so that two or three more years are guaranteed at 30 million a season. Then have a declining option year or two at the end. If I was him I wouldn’t accept anything less and if I was being traded to the Mets, nothing less than the original agreement would be acceptable. What do you think it takes for Carlos to waive his no trade clause?

Here is the Twins offseason sorry to burst your bubble but here it is. 1. Trade Paddack and free up some cash 2. Either resign Carlos Santana to a 1 year deal or not. He is not a budget buster. The Twins say they have a 130 million budget but I’m sure they can go to 133 million or probably 135 tops We also have internal candidates for the position. 3. Sign depth relievers to minor league deals 4. Sign a back up player who can play CF defense. 5. Hire coaches and internal personnel. offseason complete. We have several starting pitchers ready for an opportunity Festa, Matthews, and Morris with Dobnak for emergency. We actually have plenty of relievers going into the offseason but why not add competition on minor league deals. We have ERod about ready to come up next year as well plus we have many young IF prospects/ players. There is not much to be done. Our team has a high floor moving forward as is.

This will be a slow offseason. The big moves are trading Paddack and his exorbitant 7.5 million salary and the Twins will sign Jorge Polanco to a 1 year 3 million contract with 1 or 2 million in incentives. I hope they resign Santana but I can also see him going to San Diego or another team that wants a low cost 1B. Another signing could be Taylor on a 1 year 1 or 2 million contract. He had a bad season last year and so i am sure he wont cost much. and a few minor league signings for relievers and what else is on the list of things to do?

This is not your Tom Kelley Twins that’s for sure. Rocco should get the team back out on the field for extra IF practice when the defense screws up badly.

That was exactly what I remembered about these guys too. I used to folllow the minor leagues for the Twins from the USA Baseball Weekly magazine. I remember thinking Mark Guthrie was a future star with his AA numbers and wondered why Torii Hunter was a prospect at all. And thinking Mahones was a future #2 or 3 starter.

Does anyone know the Twins payroll in 1984 when Pohlad bought the team? How has payroll inflated vs the value of the franchise? This would or could be a fun stat to argue about here.

The big negative for prospective Twins buyers is the large number of competing local teams for the sports dollars. Wild, Timberwolves, Vikings, U of M., Saint Paul Saints, Lynx, ….

He could also DH. Larnarch was DH a fair amount last season.

I’m more sure where he should be. I just know he will likely be a free agent and can play 3B, 2B and a little SS and he is good enough with the bat. He will also cost less 1-5 million contract. My guess is 3 million. That has a chance of replacing Castro in the IF. I just speculate that is an option.

I can see the Twins bench as Martin, (2B, LF, RF some CF), Helman. (3B, 2B, LF, RF maybe 1B and SS), Castro (CF, SS, LF, 2B, 3B maybe RF) and Velazquez (C maybe 1B).

Polanco get resigned? He has IF positional flexibility and will cost less as I don’t think Seattle picks up his option. That is the only way I see the Twins dealing Castro. I can see the Twins signing him to a 3 year contract too 9, 10, then 11 million over three years. Castro could be worth a little more maybe 3 year 36-39 million but not more than that. But I think the odds are less the 20% we trade him and that guestimate feels high to me.

Santana is the prototypical Twins hitter. 20 HRs 70-80 RBIs good defense. Terry Ryan would be proud. Those type of hitters are a fraction of the cost of 100 RBI guys and the Twins run up the score by having a superior bench and deeper lineup. I’m fine with bringing Santana back for 5-6 million again. He is still good defensively and can be sent to the bench and still be valuable at that price. We do have Killeroff, Larnarch, and Miranda on hand for 1B and Severino in AAA. So we’ll see. When ERod comes up next year Larnarch will need a spot too. I almost forgot Julien for 1B. So much mediocrity I hope someone pulls it out.

3.5-4 million is not too much for even the Twins to pay a reliever. Durán stays. Stewart is elite when healthy and won’t cost much he also stays. Glad Varland is in the pen. We have lots of options heading into next season with several more on the way. I’m more concerned with us keeping Canterino and if he will ever be able to pitch. He could solve any last remaining bullpen issues.

I’m the minority but I actually appreciated the Pohlads telling us up front about the budget and plans. I do wish they had the fortitude to see baseball through the changing financial landscape throughout baseball as tv revenue dwindles and moves to streaming. I think my favorite thing about how the Twins operate is more like a family than business environment. My only complaint is that they don’t go all in very often. I guess they did two years ago but the change in TV revenue killed that and it looks like they can’t find ways to replace it which is why the team is now up for sale. I hope Derek Jeter leads a group of investors to buy the team. That would be funny while at the same time he would be the type of owner we want if we have to replace the Pohlads.

So we are in that phase of going from watching DVDs to streaming at Netflix of 12 years ago give or take.

In Paddack’s 17 starts he gave up 3 earned runs or less 11 times. He gave up 4 or 5 runs 4 times and 2 blow outs of 7 and 9 earned runs given up. I think he is more effective than not. The question with him in the rotation is how many innings can he throw in a game on a regular basis? Can he get between 5 and 6 innings next season. He didn’t last season. He will be worth his salary if he hits atleast 110-120 innings next season. The other benefit of keeping Paddack is Ober and Ryan start getting expensive after next season Festa or whoever the new starter will be will have an extra year of waiting for arbitration which helps us keep a Ryan or Ober longer.

Why not start the season in the rotation for Paddack to give Woods-Richardson a chance to prove he can repeat last season. Then move Paddack to the pen if no other injuries in the rotation and Festa or Mathew’s or Morris are dominating AAA. Depth is your friend. Paddack is going to be more valuable to the Twins at 7.5 million than he would be in a trade. More than likely.

The Twins could resign Polanco this offseason for 2B. He would be cheap after last season. He is the one player it’s ok if he gets injured cause Lee will need more chances. Also Julien may figure things out too. but there is no reason to rebuild. The issue for this team is to figure out how to time Correa’s and Buxton’s injuries so they do not overlap too much and to get more consistency from Wallner and Lewis. And for Rocco to figure out if a players performance like Killeroff or Miranda’s performance drops off a cliff that it’s probably an injury being undisclosed and DL the player and bring someone up. E Rod will be up at some point next season so we have offensive reinforcements on the way.. We already have reinforcements for the rotation with more on the way. Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, Woods-Richardson, Festa, Mathews, and Dobnak. With Lewis and Morris almost ready for an opportunity. That’s 10 starters. The pen is looking good too now that Varland is going there full time it will be interesting to see if he can make it there. Depending on Brock Stewart’s rehab will determine if we need to sign a reliever or just minor league depth. back to position player side real quick, the Twins need a CF and and back up IF and a bat to replace Santana if we don’t resign him. Austin Martin should go the either instructional league or winter ball to play CF defense. Larnarch should practice 1B as well. With Walner ERod and Buxton in the OF Larnarch will be getting time at 1B and DH and some in LF next season. The two biggest needs for this team next year is health and maturity gain and consistency from the younger hitters. on a fun note. I expect the Twins to participate in the rule 5 draft this year. This is potentially a great avenue for finding cheap players. Since the budget squeeze is on all avenues for finding talent need to be.open.

Killeroff is arbitration eligible. I think this means the max his base salary can go down is 20%. That type of talk hasn’t happened since the early 90’s.. that is why you are seeing basically a similar salary to this season for next year. But I agree he should get a pay cut in guaranteed salary with incentives. I think close to 20% cut 1.4 million with incentives to 2.5 million. See if a carrot motivates him and if he is willing to bet on himself. Because Killeroff would have to agree with this contract or he could push for arbitration.

I agree. I just wonder if the Twins will look the other way if they think he can produce with the bat for 400 AB in a season for the 1.8 million at a 115+ OPS rate next season. If they think he can he will be signed for 1B saving 4 million. If not he may be gone. I agree with Nick that it is something to consider. I give him a 50/50 odds.

The Twins are replacing Farmers 6 million with Castro’s 6 million so no need to trade him as we still have his 3 million from this season to carry forward for payroll next year. Killeroff is the big question mark. I think he’s gone but the potential for value is still there and if the Twins could get him at 1.7 million or even the 1.8 million projected it’s close enough to the league minimum that he’s worth one last gamble. Topa is the big question on the pitching staff but he too is close enough to the league minimum that he should be worth the risk. How is Duran even a question? He’ll be back next year now the following year could be interesting…..🤔 I imagine the Twins will push for Topa and Killeroff to sign before the tender date and if not their risk of being cut loose goes up.
