Twins pitchers as a team in all of MLB: 6th best ERA 3rd best ERA+ Lead all of MLB in team SO 3rd best FIP 4th best in walks allowed 6th best in hits allowed Yet people still look for ways to complain about how he (Rocco) handled his pitching staff this year. Amazing.

Twins Announce Wild Card Roster
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would be interested to see a deeper dive into this. On the surface, what you are saying has merit, but without knowing more results, it's just optics (ie it looks bad and leaves the bench vulnerable) How many times did it really leave the bench short in vital situations? What was successful, what wasn't? How many times did it result in the wrong matchups in later innings? Was the PH in the 4th inning more vital to a win than an 8th inning opportunity? On the top, there is a pretty good argument for it's effectiveness: Buxton, Correa, Vazquez, took a ton of horrible PA. Add in Gallo, Miranda, Gordon on the lower end of that spectrum and they still finished in the top 3rd offensively. You could say they got the most out of their rookies and bench guys by protecting them and putting them into positions to be successful.- 53 replies

Twins Announce Wild Card Roster
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Awfully hard to argue with this approach when in all of MLB, the Twins are ranked 10th in runs scored and lead all of baseball with +74 runs in September. This is with Correa, Buxton, and Vazquez either not playing or playing terribly all year long.- 53 replies

Twins Announce Wild Card Roster
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have been extremely aggressive in this regard all season. Why would you expect any changes in the postseason? Especially considering runs are historically harder to come by in the postseason... High leverage situations in the 4th inning are just as, if not more important, than in the later innings. A known quantity early vs a potential quantity later. This has been the approach. Ride her till she bucks you or don't ride at all.- 53 replies

3 Options: The Royce Lewis Contingency Plan
Fire Dan Gladden commented on Cody Christie's article in Twins
Doesn't matter what I want, what matters is his level of health and what the Twins believe: If he can swing and run with minimal issues, look for him to DH or PH. If you can add lunge and twist, put him in the field. If the re-injury risk is too high, shelve him and hope for the next round.- 26 comments

This Is The Most Insanely Priced Item Of Twins Memorabilia I Have Ever Seen

The aggressive approach to the lineup is what got them here and what the players are currently used to. Do not expect much to change to this approach in the postseason.

Twins Playoff Roster: Starting Rotation
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Quality flexibility is such a good problem to have. Arguing over the 3rd starter is semantics at the moment. Like Rocco said, we gotta get there first. Lopez and Gray for games 1&2, the situation will dictate game 3. Ryan or Maeda will get the nod. Look for Ober as a reliever.- 22 replies

Lee isn't on the 40 man roster, correct? Doesn't that make him ineligible for the playoff roster? Didn't he need to be on the 40-man by August 31st? I believe the only players not on the 40-man roster on August 31st that are eligible are those returning from injury...

All this talk of Gray being upset for the poor lineup yesterday is nonsense. Gray is a veteran that knows the situation. The games are less important right now. What is more important is that he continues to pitch well (stay sharp) and the lineup is rested and healthy for the playoffs. The more I think about it, I am really at a loss with what Gray's plans are for this offseason. Gray may test the FA market, but the Twins have found the formula to get the absolute best results from him while increasing his workload. Undoubtedly the Twins will QO him, but I could easily see him back here even if he tests the market.

Item #1 requires a more in-depth analysis, especially for the pitching. Day games typically come immediately after a night game. That may not be the case in the playoffs with all of the days off. How many of those pitchers are pitching back-to-back? What do those numbers look like? Item #2 will essentially not change from the approach during the season with no "days off". The guys that management thinks will give them the best chance to win on any given day will play. Matchups will continue to be a huge focus. Item #3 Correa and Buxton are the big pieces here. What, if anything, will they give them in the playoffs.

Twins Go Two Days Without an Injury
Fire Dan Gladden replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Stu. You just jinxed them. -
Keuchel over Paddack in the Pen. Ober over Stewart in the Pen Maeda and Ryan will be interchangeable Past performance means nothing. Health and matchups are the key.

Are We Getting Enough Talent From our Drafts during Falvey's Tenure?
Fire Dan Gladden commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
Seven years is not a huge window for analyzing drafts, but they absolutely have to receive a ton of credit so far. - They have reimagined the entire farm system with a large number of hard throwing pitchers. All of the pitching prospects on the cusp are theirs. - Complaints can be made in hindsight about the prospects they have traded, but the fact is that at the time the trades were made, they were viewed to have tied or won most every deal. - Churning out 2-3 quality starting players every year is a FANTASTIC output. They are trending in that direction right now. People complain about the FO for a lot of reasons, but I can't see how their can be complaints about the farm system -
Sonny and the Cy Young
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Too many politics and opinions weigh into these types of awards in all sports. Players know this. Gray has had an outstanding season. Last year he complained bout not going deeper into games. This year he is averaging 2/3 inning longer per start. You also have to wonder how much the Vasquez signing has helped with him and the staff this year. I would be very happy to see him back on a 2-3 year contract, but it doesn't feel very promising... -
I don't think one outing will decide it. I think he has shown enough success that they have more faith in him than they do in the bottom third of the BP come postseason. He brings a different look than the rest of the staff (not all FB) and a veteran presence. Unless all the injured pitchers are back with a vengeance, it is hard to see him out of the mix

SP coming out of the pen is not an issue, happens multiple times every single year in the playoffs. Assuming everyone stays healthy, Gray and Lopez are your two rotation locks. Maeda is a 80% SP lock. Ober and Ryan are very possible. That 3rd and/or 4th SP slot could be easily be a situational decision based on who they are playing, so nothing would surprise me there. Pitching DK out of the pen yesterday should give you an idea where the Twins stand with him. I would call him a 75% lock to make the postseason roster. Pitching is different than hitting. If Stewart looks strong and comes back, he could also change the BP dynamics. Regarding Stevenson, I agree with others. His role is 100% dependent on Buxton. I have a hard time seeing Gordon come back at all this year.

I agree with most of this. This is the textbook win/win for both organizations at this time. You know the saying: Better to trade them a year too early than a year too late. That being said, I think the outlook is much higher for the Twins to "win" this trade. Arraez's knees are still a ticking time-bomb. The Twins were able to lock up a solid 1/2 pitcher for a very reasonable contract over his prime age years. I would also take high-end starting pitching over high-end hitting every day of the week. Lopez reminds me of Brad Radke. Head down, not always dominating but gives his team a chance to win every day, quietly a very good pitcher that flies under the radar.

Is Kenta Maeda Bullpen Bound?
Fire Dan Gladden replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Assuming health does not play a role from here on out, the only locks for SP right now in the playoffs are Gray and Lopez. Maeda and Ryan are locks for the roster. Ober and Keuchel are extremely strong candidates to be on the roster. The 3rd and/or 4th SP slot will entirely depend on who and where they are playing. The others will play pivotal roles in the BP. Having a plethora of quality SP is an extremely fun problem to have!- 20 replies

You make acquisitions by trading from depth. Larnach is an optimal trade chip: very unlikely to see time on the Twins, but still has value as a prospect. Package him for an upgrade or a position of need.

Yep. Having a guy on the end of the bench that has a career OPS+ of 109, a OPS+ this year of 100, can play 5 positions defensively, 4 of them above average... For the playoffs would basically be a defensive replacement or HR needing pinch hitter. Teams never need guys like this at all...
