I would think that Severino would be one of the top 5 prospects on the list. He has been ripping apart AA pitching as Jeremy notes in a recent article.

Good games for Martin, Schobel, Severino, and Sabato. another bad game fir the Twins Dominican league team. The record indicates that they are just awful. Does anyone know which highly touted international signees are on that team? Thankfully, there are prospects in T. Paul, Wichita, Cedar Rapids and Ft. Myers.

Jenkins…signed?
Twinsoholic replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I am just wondering if there could be a medical red flag that has delayed the signing. Whether Chief was correct or not about Jenkins’s health is less the issue. I do recall, however, that he was skeptical about the selection of Jenkins. I hope there is no medical problem and that Jenkins signs. But, because he has not signed yet, I started to wonder about possible causes for the delay. Possible health concern came to mind. The MLB draft is often a crap shoot. There is no guarantee that the 6th pick is better than the 15th, or that the 3rd is better than the 7th, etc. -
Jenkins…signed?
Twinsoholic replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Is it possible there is a problem with his physical exam that is delaying the signing? On draft day Chief expressed concern about Jenkins’ health history. If the Twins do not sign Jenkins, the Twins get the #6 selection in round 1 as well as their regular first round slot pick. -
Former Twins prospect Trey Cabbage scored the winning run in extra innings as the Angels came from behind repeatedly tonight against the Astros in a wild game: 13 to 12. Ryan Presley had been unhittable for Houston of late, but he blew the save in the night as the Angels came back one more time in this contest. This was only Cabbage’s second MLB game. He never got a call up with the Twins. I don’t remember if he got to AA with the Twins. He was a 3rd or 4th round pick in the draft where another high schooler, Blankenhorn, was selected before him (Cabbage got the higher signing bonus). I had thought Cabbage had long since been retired. He was recently called up because he was hitting very well at AAA.

Where Would They Rank?
Twinsoholic replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Lefty61, Good call to remind us not to overlook Salas despite his underwhelming season so far given what was likely the high expectation of many of us following the reports of his prospect status at the time of the trade. But, Schobel is on fire—another home run today (14 so far). His batting average and OPS are promising. While Schobel is. Ot a shortstop, he can play 3B and likely 2B. He was underwhelming last season, but he has been hitting extremely well for some time now. If only Miller could also learn to hit consistently (he did have 2 hits today—his batting average is creeping up at .213). I agree with Jeremy’s ranking of Schobel at this time. From my perspective, Schobel looks like a better second round selection than Miller if Miller’s offensive numbers don’t improve significantly. Without stronger batting prowess, Miller’s best hope is to replicate Mark Belanger defense at shortstop. One more thing. Sabato has been hitting much better of late. He homered today and has his batting average up to .225. It had been well bow the Mendoza line for so long. His OPS is now .821.- 21 replies

Jax needs to be in St. Paul. Pagan needs to be DFA. Try Balazovic in the pen, and see if De Leon can continue to pitch well. He should not have been pulled for Pagan against LA. On June 1, the Twins and several other teams will try to pry Chapman away from KC. I read somewhere that the Rangers are targeting Chapman.

DeLeon looked great. Baldelli should have left him in. He did give up the two singles, but he was also striking guys out. DFA Pagan and keep DeLeon. -
Garver was an 8th round pick, if memory serves.

The Twins got Paddock to sign a contract extension, so they do try to extend pitchers. If Mahle is healthy and does not sign an extension, then make a qualifying offer to him. If he accepts, then the odds are pretty good that the Twins will benefit in the 2024 season. If he declines, there is the extra draft pick. The Twins could gamble some more with a qualifying offer to Gray as well. They would only be incurring the cost for one year if he accepted. Credit is due to Falvey for the creative way the rotation has been constructed. Identifying available, controllable starters and then making the trades for them has put the Twins in a much better position to compete. It also allows starting pitching prospects more time to develop in the minor leagues or, in some cases, to recover from injuries. Less rushing of pitching prospects. I am hoping that the Twins use one of their first two Rule Four draft selections to take a high upside starter to go along with Raya and Preilip.

JD-Twins keeps hoping the Twins will sign Eovaldi: “Sign Eovaldi for 3 yrs. (reality contract length)! Can’t sweat the compensation pick……..Maeda to Pen for added depth.” In his 20 starts this past season, Eovaldi threw 109 innings. Why would the Twins spend big bucks on that kind of “production’” for a one or two or three year contract? Can he go deeper into starts consistently? Maybe. But is that a chance worth taking for the Twins at an inflated contract and at the cost of losing a draft pick? It is worth noting that Eovaldi remains unsigned by any MLB club. Do you suppose that could have something go do with the draft pick compensation and his low number of innings per start? If he can’t improve his innings per start, a team burns up its bullpen each time he starts a game. The Twins should continue to pass on him.

Twins Need a Minnesota Miracle
Twinsoholic replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why sign Eovaldi? He averaged just over 5 innings per his 20 starts this past season. He turned down a qualifying offer. How much money should the Twins pay him per year in addition to surrendering a draft pick for signing him? I hope the Twins do not sign him. He is not likely to markedly improve the team.- 81 replies

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
Twinsoholic replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
JD-Twins, Eivaldi started 20 games last year and averaged just a fraction over 5 innings per start. He turned down a qualifying offer. How much do you think the Twins should pay him and for how many seasons? Look at what Swanson just signed for with the Cubs. The Twins may be better off waiting to see who is available through a trade or two. Just spending money on free agents guarantees nothing. Does anyone seriously think the numbers Correa put up last year justify the Twins topping what the Giants were willing to pay? The Twins offer itself was a huge overpay. It is great for.Correa and his family ghat the Giants were willing to give him that contract. Let’s check back in September and October over the next several seasons to see if Correa’s on-field performance is as spectacular as his new contract. Maybe it will be, and if that happens, good for him, and perhaps it can help wipe away some of the tarnish from the trashcan seasons.- 53 replies

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
Twinsoholic replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Perhaps the Twins strategy will be to see where they rank in the Central Division in mid July and then, if competitive for 1st place, the Twins can make trades where they take on one or two or even three big contracts given their presumed surplus of salary room. If that is one approach the Twins are considering, then possibly trading Gray or Maeda could make sense if they receive an overpay (everyone wants pitching).- 53 replies

Have the Twins released Charles Mack? He was converted from 3rd base to catcher (sort of like Bechtold). Mack was a high schooler when the Twins drafted and signed him. His younger brother is a catcher who was selected, out of high school, in the first round in the draft where the Twins selected Chase Petty. I was hoping Charles Mack would excel at catcher while also being able to fill in occasionally at 1st and at 3rd. He is supposed to have a very strong arm so that is parr of the reason for moving him to catcher.

For #5, add Ronny Henriquez to the list of possible starters. He did fairly well in his major league innings this season. Maybe the Twins will think of him as a long man in the pen, but he might sneak up on a lot of people as a starter. His numbers in the minors this season were not eye catching—particularly because he had s rough time through at least the first half of the season. I liked a lot of what I saw while he was in a Twins jersey.

Look at the number of rbis Miranda already has. Compare his total with some of the teammates who have been on the Twins roster all season. Miranda is doing a great job of bringing home runners who get into scoring position. He was lucky with his first rbi today as his uniform was brushed by a pitch. Gordon set that rbi up by getting “hit” on a shoelace. I am super impressed by Miranda so far.

I share Nicksaviking’s surprise that the Twins are paying most of Rogers’ salary ($6.6 million). How often do the Twins send money in a trade? Is this money going to help get a blue chip player to be named later, or does it signal something else such as the value of the team control years for Paddack and Pagan?

Congratulations to Mr. Ortiz. I agree with Old Twins Cap. It is hard for me, a fan since 1969, to think of a bigger mistake than trading Ortiz. Ortiz’s criticisms of Kelly following the trade were spot on. Ryan is obviously to blame as well. This isn’t 20/20 hindsight. I complained about that trade back in the old days of Fastball and the other Twins Fans websites that eventually paved the way for Twins Daily.

If the Twins are going to be able to trade for a very good starting pitcher (as opposed to signing a very good free agent starter,), then I think Miranda will be part of what the Twins will have to give up in order to get a very good starter (if there are very good starters available for trade). I would love to see Miranda playing for the Twins, but I am not counting on it.

40 Man Roster and the Rule 5 Draft
Twinsoholic commented on terrydactyls's blog entry in A Look Back
I would not drop Pineda. Resign him. I could see the Twins deciding to release Coulombe. Gant and/or Stashak could also be released. I am on the fence about La Tortuga. The Twins got fleeced twice in last year’s rule 5 draft. I hope they leave one roster spot open to make a selection this year. -
Roger asked a good question about who you would have dropped off the 40 man roster to add Baddoo and Wells. The Twins could have dropped Nick Gordon and Jake Cave, There are other possibilities. Who believes Cave was indispensable? Gordon has done well, particularly in being able to play the outfield in addition to infield positions. Wasn’t Blankenhorn also on the 40 man roster? Would you rather have Wells or Gorden or Blankenhorn? Would you rather have 4th outfielder Cave or prospect Baddoo? I know I would not have minded keeping Baddoo and Wells at the start of the season rather than Cave and either Blankenhorn or Gorden. One more name for you: would you rather have Wells or Smeltzer? Give me Wells based on higher talent potential. I love Smeltzer’s ability to overcome personal adversity, but there has not been a lot of success in MLB games.
