Riverbrian’s statement, “Letting a Logan Morrison type play horribly, play every day, taking up a valuable roster spot just makes it harder to near impossible for a Mullins or Altuve to surprise you,” reminded me of the futility of Tom Kelly repeatedly playing Brent Gates rather than a younger player. It was brutal tv watching as was reading on Fastball, and other Twins forum of that time, the Kelly defenders of this decision to continue penciling in Gates game after game after game after game.

Luzardo and a low A ball position player prospect for Julian and Lee. This approximates the 3 Marlins for 1 Twins (Arraez) last off season). The Twins goal is then to extend Luzardo a la the Lopez extension.

Oliver Ortega is now a former Twins pitcher. Houston claimed him off of waivers. His AAA numbers were excellent, but he was injured. He is still only 27 years old.

Should Twins Continue to Trade for a Starter
Twinsoholic replied to Twinsoholic's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Mets have a lot of guaranteed contracts according to MLB Trade Rumors. Is there a hitter and/or starter that the Twins might want from the Mets? I assume the Mets want to free up some salary to provide more flexibility in assembling their team after this past season’s terrible showing. Hitters include Alonso and outfielder Brandon Nimmo. If not trading for a hitter, could the Mets be enticed to trade Kodai Senga to the Twins? Nimmo is owed a lot of money but is controllable through 2030 and Senga through 2027. I think Alonso is under control for the 2024 season ($22 million estimated arbitration salary). The salaries for any one of these three controllable players may be too much from the Twins perspective, but would Alonso on a one year deal be worth it to fill the middle of the batting order? -
One key reason the Twins are stronger than in previous years is the development of youngee players now on the major league roster. Another reason is trading talent for starting pitchers. Gray and Lopez worked out. Paddock might work out. Mahle did not, and Maeda worked out for one season. With Gray and Maeda likely leaving now, should the Twins look to follow their recent approach of trading for a number 2 (or number 1) starter with team control for at least 2 seasons? While some may not like this approach, I do like it (particularly given the team’s inability to develop a crop of effective starting pitching). While Varland might be an option, he might also be best kept in the pen. if the Twins were to find a team willing to trade a Pablo Lopez type of starter with 2 years of team control, what might it cost the Twins?

Twins Youth Burning Them at the Worst Time
Twinsoholic replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seth, Why is it either/or: “over react or go with …”? You have stacked the deck in your analysis. Any change in the line up involving not starting one of the rookies is an “over reaction”? A manager’s job is to put the best combination of players in the line up on any given day. The roster size allows for inter-changeability based on performance, peaking and declining, degrees of injuries (players are always battling some degree of injury), regression, experience, poise, and mojo (to name a few factors). You can certainly say “I prefer that Baldelli starts the same line up because Houston’s pitcher is a righty.” That is fair enough. But, are others who want line up changes irrationally over reacting?- 57 replies

I have been super impressed with how Ft Myers has gone from a losing record all season to now being several games over .500. They pretty much sucked all season, but now they have somehow turned the corner. Wichita is the only full season Twins minor league team with a losing record. That is impressive.

Was Joe Mauer's Contract Extension Worth It?
Twinsoholic replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I definitely remember Joe’s highlights—much to admire. He had a remarkable stretch for a while as a catcher. But, during his last few seasons, Mauer monotonously flying out to Alex Gordon, who hardly had to move often, was mind-numbing. He was a first baseman without power. I never understood why he did not pull the ball much—for whatever reason. He did play good defense at first. I know my view about the contract extension is not shared by most on this forum. I am suggesting, however, that Mauer’s total career, viewed objectively in the context of the careers of Killebrew, Oliva, and Carew, could be understood as very, very good, but not legendary. At the time of the contract extension, I think the Twins were at or near rebuilding. Perhaps a trade would have been the better route to go, but we will never know. -
Was Joe Mauer's Contract Extension Worth It?
Twinsoholic replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No for Joe. The same is true for the Correa contract. I liked the Buxton signing when it happened, but so far that contract extension looks less than good. I get that Mauer is local, but that still does not mean he was worth it. When I think of Mauer now I think of left fielders waiting to catch his predictable fly balls and line drives to left field. Obviously injuries took their toll, dampening what had once been an exciting career. Growing up, I watched Tony Oliva and Rod and Harmon. All three were superior Twins players. Injuries also diminished Tony’s career, but he does deserve the plaque that honors him in Cooperstown. I am not sure Joe will get there. -
I would think that Severino would be one of the top 5 prospects on the list. He has been ripping apart AA pitching as Jeremy notes in a recent article.

Good games for Martin, Schobel, Severino, and Sabato. another bad game fir the Twins Dominican league team. The record indicates that they are just awful. Does anyone know which highly touted international signees are on that team? Thankfully, there are prospects in T. Paul, Wichita, Cedar Rapids and Ft. Myers.

Jenkins…signed?
Twinsoholic replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I am just wondering if there could be a medical red flag that has delayed the signing. Whether Chief was correct or not about Jenkins’s health is less the issue. I do recall, however, that he was skeptical about the selection of Jenkins. I hope there is no medical problem and that Jenkins signs. But, because he has not signed yet, I started to wonder about possible causes for the delay. Possible health concern came to mind. The MLB draft is often a crap shoot. There is no guarantee that the 6th pick is better than the 15th, or that the 3rd is better than the 7th, etc. -
Jenkins…signed?
Twinsoholic replied to AlwaysinModeration's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Is it possible there is a problem with his physical exam that is delaying the signing? On draft day Chief expressed concern about Jenkins’ health history. If the Twins do not sign Jenkins, the Twins get the #6 selection in round 1 as well as their regular first round slot pick. -
Former Twins prospect Trey Cabbage scored the winning run in extra innings as the Angels came from behind repeatedly tonight against the Astros in a wild game: 13 to 12. Ryan Presley had been unhittable for Houston of late, but he blew the save in the night as the Angels came back one more time in this contest. This was only Cabbage’s second MLB game. He never got a call up with the Twins. I don’t remember if he got to AA with the Twins. He was a 3rd or 4th round pick in the draft where another high schooler, Blankenhorn, was selected before him (Cabbage got the higher signing bonus). I had thought Cabbage had long since been retired. He was recently called up because he was hitting very well at AAA.

Where Would They Rank?
Twinsoholic replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Lefty61, Good call to remind us not to overlook Salas despite his underwhelming season so far given what was likely the high expectation of many of us following the reports of his prospect status at the time of the trade. But, Schobel is on fire—another home run today (14 so far). His batting average and OPS are promising. While Schobel is. Ot a shortstop, he can play 3B and likely 2B. He was underwhelming last season, but he has been hitting extremely well for some time now. If only Miller could also learn to hit consistently (he did have 2 hits today—his batting average is creeping up at .213). I agree with Jeremy’s ranking of Schobel at this time. From my perspective, Schobel looks like a better second round selection than Miller if Miller’s offensive numbers don’t improve significantly. Without stronger batting prowess, Miller’s best hope is to replicate Mark Belanger defense at shortstop. One more thing. Sabato has been hitting much better of late. He homered today and has his batting average up to .225. It had been well bow the Mendoza line for so long. His OPS is now .821.- 21 replies

Jax needs to be in St. Paul. Pagan needs to be DFA. Try Balazovic in the pen, and see if De Leon can continue to pitch well. He should not have been pulled for Pagan against LA. On June 1, the Twins and several other teams will try to pry Chapman away from KC. I read somewhere that the Rangers are targeting Chapman.

DeLeon looked great. Baldelli should have left him in. He did give up the two singles, but he was also striking guys out. DFA Pagan and keep DeLeon.
