    The numbers this year for the Long Beach State pitcher, Lavallee, are quite good.

    Birdsell had rotator cuff surgery this spring. Ouch! Prior to that he had an upper 90s fastball.

    Miller was projected to go later in the second round, so my guess is that he is going to sign for second round money rather than sandwich pick slot money. I hope the Twins draft a few more high school players over their next four or five selections. Time to reseed the system. This time next year, the Twins will have earlier selections in each round (maybe they will be able to select a top of the rotation college starter in the first round next year).

    I agree with gunnarthor on Mauer and intelligence. Obviously it depends on how you are defining it. From another perspective, Jonathan Scoop speaks/reads 5 or 6 languages. Mike Marshall was a doctor as well as one hell of a reliever. Craig Breslin was no academic slouch. Jason Castro went to Stanford and was praised for his defense. I suspect that Tony Olivia had as much baseball smarts as anyone who ever put on a baseball uniform. Selecting Mayer just seems like a hometown choice. He was a great ball player, but was he really the Twins’ Einstein of baseball? Not from my perspective. I will grant that was from your perspective.

    He does nibble. He gets 2 strikes and then refuses to throw the third one. Batters know this and lay off his next pitches. His pitch count escalates. Jack Morris has had Gibson’s number on this for quite a while. Morris also notes that Gibson is reluctant to throw fastballs inside to right hand batters with 2 strikes. Hitters have figured this out as well and know they don’t have to look for this pitch. Escalating pitch counts hurt Gibson’s effectiveness. I also agree with the comment above about his problems once he gets a runner on base. I definitely wish him the best—I certainly could not be a major league player. I root for him but he is fairly predictable and that has something to do with his results.

    Notice that Bremer and Smalley were surprised Cave swung 3 and 0. They know the "rule." Tommy Watkins knows the "rule"--that's why he said something to Cave at first base. Cave knows the "rule"--he likely had the count wrong in his mind at that time, so he swung the bat at the pitch.

    I also want to thank Mariana Guzman for interviewing the players and writing the article. Minor league ball is challenging in so many ways if your first language is English. Think about the off the field challenges for the Latinos. It is great that they are becoming bi-lingual. I wish them all the best and hope to see them playing in the majors for the Twins.

    How fast is a typical Randy Dobnak fastball? What are his other pitches?

    Look at Cantorino’s pitch count from yesterday: 18 pitches thrown, and all 18 were strikes. I have never seen anything like that for someone who started a game.

    That was not a good pitch. It was down and in to a lefty. That is the stereotypical sweet spot for a lefty. I am not surprised by the result. May has to use his fastball as his out pitch or he will not be long for important situations in meaningful games.

    So May has given up key homers 2 games in a row by throwing a curve ball when he has 2 strikes on the batters. Who is calling the pitches? Is May shaking off the catcher? Stick with the 97-98 mph fastballs.

    Torreyes was 5 for 6 in the double header with 3 homers and 5 rbi. He has been on fire since returning to Rochester.

    Chalmers throws 95 to 97 mph. I don't think he nibbles. He just misses the zone a lot with his heater. I wonder how many of his Ks come because hitters swing at pitches out of the zone. If he can throw strikes consistently then he should move up quickly through the minors. Garvin Alston worked with him some while Chalmers was in the minors with the Oakland As. Alston was glowing in his praise for Chalmers in terms of stuff and competitiveness and ceiling

    Diehardtwinsfan, I agree with you about Jaylin Davis. He is having a really strong season. I could see him included in a trade for a reliever given his season so far.

    I agree that Miranda had the better day at the plate. Jaylin Davis with the homer was the first hitter who caught my eye from yesterday. I am not knocking Rooker, but 2 hits and 2 walks in a double header seems neither great nor poor performance.

    Does 2 for 7 in a double header make one Hitter of the Day? He walked twice but still ....

    I agree about Bechtold. He has really improved offensively and his defense is really good. He deserves some more notice.

    The Braves were able to draft Langeliers because they did not sign Carter Stewart last year. Had they signed Stewart last year, the Braves would not have had the #9 selection this year. The Twins would have had the 12th pick rather than the 13th pick and still may have selected Cavaco had Langeliers still been available. But, they might have taken Langeliers. Who do you all like as a better pick? Cavaco or Langaliers? I was hoping Langaliers would be available, but I am not displeased by the pick of the Twins.

    I did read the Ringer article the other day. I agree that it is awesome reading. The part on Castro is fascinating: not good at framing/blocking. They worked with him on these areas, and before long he is recognized as being quite good in this skill set. The part on Pressly is more in-depth.

    Someone mentioned the Astros draft. If you look at it you will see that Houston has drafted 4 center fielders and just 2 pitchers. The Twins have been drafting SSs and the Astros have been drafting CFs. There is a parallel of sorts here. I am not sure who mentioned Houston's draft earlier, but I am glad that the person did mention it.

    Legumina was previously drafted by the Indians as a late round selection.

    He appeared in 2 games in the Cape Cod League. 9 shutout innings. 10 hits in 9 innings. Gonzaga reliever. Started the 2 games in the Cape.
