    I’m sure these percentages differ when the game is tied in the home half of the ninth (or later) inning. In that circumstance if the batter is a good bunter I would almost always bunt with a runner on 2nd and none out. And I’m far more likely to squeeze with a runner on 3rd and one out.

    Funderburk has pitched all season too, so he’ll need as much rest as everyone else.

    Keuchel and Ryan are fresher than the other four right now so I would be more inclined to keep those two on regular rest and give each of the other four one skipped start. The team is currently rostering six starters. I think the rules would allow Ober to be optioned today, enabling us to add another reliever right now, and with the roster expansion taking effect on Friday he could be reinstated at any time. With a skipped turn his next start would be around September 8.

    Splitting the series would have been considered good. Taking 3 of 4 is an excellent outcome. Similarly, taking 2 of the upcoming 6 games against Cleveland would be OK. 3 of 6 would be good. 4 or more would be excellent.

    No, you’re not. Grown men should be able to dress themselves. If they want something that opens in the back maybe get a medical gown. After all, Minnesota is the home of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.

    I take issue with the title of this thread. I don’t think anything about “the process “ went “horribly wrong “. I think the plan for managing Buck’s situation was the best that could be done. No one had or has a crystal ball. Everyone hoped that his health would improve with a reduced role and felt that it was a perfectly reasonable route to follow. It’s certainly unfortunate that this didn’t happen but I do not think that any mismanagement took place. You just do what you can and hope for the best. And that’s exactly what the team is doing now: following a plan they think will enable them to get the most they can out of him for the rest of the season and (we are all hopeful) for the postseason.

    Twins fans look at the bottom of the ninth as a hitting success. Diamondback fans look at the bottom of the ninth as a pitching failure. Not sure which is more accurate.

    Do I trust the FO? I don't think that's the right question. To me, it's how well have Falvey and Levine done their jobs? Evaluating that would require a wide-ranging detailed analysis. While looking at trades and draft choices is certainly part of the matter, this goes far further than that. Who has been hired and how have they performed? This applies to everyone in baseball operations, from the manager and coaches to scouts to player development to clubhouse attendants. Beyond that, for lack of a better way to say it, what is the corporate culture like? Are employees treated fairly and respectfully? Does the FO create an environment in which employees want to do all they can for the betterment of the organization? How well is the organization positioned for long-term success, both on the field and as a business? I'm sure there's much more that someone who understands how large organizations function would look at. Do the same thing for every other MLB franchise. Then look at how the Twins' front office compares with the other 29 teams.

    Until he was injured, Morneau was playing better in 2010 than he did in 2006. And regarding Nathan, you can cherry pick all you want but he was an elite-level closer at or near the peak of his career. Moreover, had he not been injured the infamous Wilson-Ramos-for-Matt-Capps trade would not have been made. So I guess we'll have to agree to strongly disagree.

    Jon Miller correctly pronounces Hispanic names, so well that I wouldn't be surprised if he's fluent. Unfortunately, such is not the case with the Twins' radio analyst.

    I don't think this is close to being true. The extension came before the 2010 season. Picture the 2010 team if two key players--Nathan and Morneau--hadn't been lost to injury. That's a World Championship team.

    Go back to the 2009/2010 off-season when this contract was negotiated. At that point in time Joe Mauer was the best baseball player in the world. Whatever it took to get him to sign was money well spent.

    Players must learn to report ANY physical symptom that is at all out of the ordinary. Per the StarTribune it has been over five weeks since the injury occurred. Get past the misguided notion of self-sacrifice and bravado. Get past the denial. I realize that many athletes have the view that trying to play through an injury is admirable, but the team's medical staff is made up of trained professionals and it is they who should determine the best course of action, not the player. Look at Ryan's recent performance. This is a classic example of a player hurting his team by not reporting an injury. I don't solely blame Ryan, I guess, because it's up to the team to create a culture and environment in which players understand their responsibilities in this regard and feel confident that they won't be judged as crybabies or prima donnas.

    1987 is an invalid comparison. The 2023 team itself may be remindful of the 1987 team but that's not the case regarding the postseason situation. Not even close. The 1987 team had the worst record of 4 postseason teams but only had to win 2 series and had home field advantage for both of them. Moreover, when they played St. Louis Jack Clark was out and Terry Pendleton was significantly gimpy. The 2023 team currently has the worst record of 12 postseason teams and is guaranteed home field advantage in only the first of four postseason series that they would need to win to become World Champions.

    By its inaction the FO is saying that we wouldn't have been able to improve our roster at a reasonable price. They are saying that it's up to our current players to improve their performance. Now. So OK, guys, do it. Let's see what you got.

    No bullpen has 8 lock-down guys and this statement is true for many, many relievers throughout the major leagues. He's good enough to be on the roster, but I wish we could predict when he is going to give up a home run because when he does it seems like it happens at the worst possible moments.

    Concur. I think the combination of Buxton at DH, Julien at 2B, Polanco at 3B and Lewis in CF is probably the best and most likely way to finish the regular season, making the shift FF posted for the postseason. I think putting Buxton in CF in the postseason has been the Twins' plan for several months. That plan means hoping for two uncertain things. One, that we qualify for the postseason with our current outfielders and, two, that keeping Buck at DH enables his knee to hold up well enough to play CF in October.

    Once again, every player who does not have a no-trade clause in his contract should always be on the market and traded if the transaction improves the organization. Every. Player.

    Yeah, we could see him in the September Angels series instead. I'd rather have seen him with the White Sox.

    As you were saying, since today is an off day nothing needs to be made official until tomorrow. I assume they'll add Floro. Buxton will be back from paternity leave. Larnach was sent back to AAA after yesterday's game in order to be able to play for the Saints tonight.

    And which reliever would you have put into the game? In the 4th inning, no less. And what would that do for the KC series.
