  1. We better hope Mahle pitches as well as a number two starter in 2023 and signs an extension. We gave up some good prospects to get him.
  2. If the pitching pipeline looked solid this could make sense for the team. But that is an unknown right now. Without pitching a Correa signing would be a nice shiny object taking up too much salary. The big question under this scenario is what would the market be for Correa with opt out after four years when he is 32? Boros wants to avoid that. Also I doubt Boros will consider anything but an 8-10 year guaranteed deal unless there is no team willing to go there. In that case offer Correa a similar contract to the previous one. By then the Twins will know if they have a long term answer at shortstop.
  3. Miranda’s bat ensures his roster spot. Let’s hope he is dedicated to improving his defense and does lots of off season work. For context Koskie was in a similar situation and he became a solid defender.
  4. Age does matter in player development. Mentioning it in a column isn’t just filler, as your sarcasm implies. Success against older players obviously helps to understand a player’s potential. Wouldn’t you prefer a 20 year old being successful against players three years older? If it is the opposite that player is a candidate for release.
  5. I understand Gray’s frustration. Baldelli doesn’t trust his starters to pitch to the the lineup a third time because that’s what the computer algorithm says. Imagine a modern day Bob Gibson or Jack Morris being pulled before facing the lineup for the third time! Money talks but I if Gray leaves after this years it will be because of Baldelli’s slavish devotion to analytics, to the detriment of managing people.
  6. Touki TOussaint might be worth a shot. He was a highly regarded prospect, but his walk rate is very high over several years and we already have Pagan doing that. Imagine both in the BP walking so many batters.
  7. Signing Rodon would help the rotation but I don’t think he’s a number one starter. You never know about the health with multi year contracts and I wouldn’t break the bank for him. Unless some of the young players take a big step forward this team isn’t a WSERIES contender without a real ace. Having a stable of number three starters might get you to the playoffs but not much farther.
  8. Bellinger isn’t a good fit with the Twins. They already have too many young left handed players needing at bats.
  9. The team does need a right handed bat, especially in the outfield. They have too many young lefty bats in Kiroloff, Kepler, Larnach, and Wallner. Gordon proved his value with position versatility so he should stay. Kepler will likely be traded, and Kiroloff, Larnach and Wallner are similar players with good power but lots of strikeouts. Of the three I think Kiroloff has the most upside as a player who could hit for a high average, be a doubles machines with his best position first. Wallner has the best speed, strong arm and athleticism. To his credit Larnach lost weight last year and looked to be in great shape. If one of these gets traded Larnach is the most likely for the reasons given.
  10. No to trading Brooks Lee in favor of signing numerous high end free agents, That’s a strategy that almost never works, especially if some of the free agents are past their mid 30’s like Abreu. Lewis and Lee are potential impact players who should be untouchable. I would love to have Woodruff, but not if it sacrifices foundational pieces for two years of Woodruff.
  11. If they can sign Rogers on a one year contract they should do it. I’m not convinced on Moran. He has great stuff but his control is an issue. Hopefully he develops into a dependable piece but he’s not there yet.
  12. Relief pitchers can bounce back from a bad season, so yes, sign Rogers to replace Pagan. They need another lefty and it doesn’t look like there are a lot of left handed prospects ready for the bigs.
  13. Both are potential impact players, which is the key to excellent teams. Hopefully the FO won’t be tempted to trade either one for pitching this offseason. Their record of recent trades is not very good.
  14. It’s a decent signing. Garlick had his moments when healthy. Low cost, low risk, but good for Garrick’s career as he tries to get eligible for the ML pension.
  15. Rocco should not be so tied to analytics. If a starter is pitching well let him continue until he is not. The Bundy and Archer retread pitcher types are the exceptions because of who they are. I’m not a fan of using a cookie cutter approach to starting pitching and ignoring intuition or gut feeling about a starter. A manager should be able to do both, like Dusty Baker. Let’s find out what some of the young starters can do. But the team has to have a very good bullpen to consistently pull the starters after five innings, a concept that Rocco seemed unaware of.
  16. They should extend Gray but not for four years at $75 million. That would be ridiculous! Another year or two extension at $12 million per year for a pitcher with a long injury history seems fair to me. Rocco’s myopic handling of starters just might actually be what Gray needs: five inning starts and 130 innings factoring in the IL that always happens with him.
  17. No trades that would involve Lewis, Lee or any of the few remaining starting pitchers with high ceilings. Murphy is good but Lewis and Lee are potential impact players, and those kind of players are essential for excellent teams.
  18. I believe Bechtold is a converted infielder. If he has average framing skills and a good arm he could be an option. He does have some power as the number indicate. He played in the AFL last year as a catcher so hopefully that jumped started his transition to that position. Otherwise how about a trade with the Yankees to bring back Rortvedt and the SS they got from Texas as a bridge to Lewis.
  19. No to any package that includes Lee or Lewis. Otherwise I’m open to it.
  20. An interesting idea that makes sense for the right deal. It looks like Julien is an on base machine.
  21. is that even legal? Rocco must be astonished that such a thing is contemplated by other managers. Haven’t they checked their computer algorithms, which makes all Rocco’s decisions. How dare they manage by intuition or having a hunch!
  22. Just curious. Why is Brayan Medina on this list as someone to watch. His stats are very poor. Lots if walks, high ERA, etc. Not much size. Must have a 100 mph fastball. Please enlighten us. Thx.
  23. If the goal is a short term solution until Lewis is ready how about IFK and Rortvedt as a package trade for some mid level minor league players? That solves two issues at once: shortstop on a one year deal and a backup catcher who plays great defense and bats left handed.
  24. Trade Pagan if they can or dfa. Another season of him would be too much to take.
