3 Signings to Make the Second the Lockout Ends
Otaknam replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree it’s time to see what the minor league starters can do. Five or six seem poised to make the roster so let’s find out. The FO isn’t going to sign an number one or two free agent starter anyway so without that making the playoffs is unlikely. I like the idea of signing Story but that’s unlikely for this franchise.- 40 replies

Otaknam replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It’s good to see to many prospects with big arms littered through the minors. No more Tom Kelly “pitch to contact” philosophy thank goodness.- 18 replies

Twins Daily 2022 Top Prospects: #16-20
Otaknam replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
As I have suggested in the past please include height and weight of these prospects. It’s relevant to know their physical stature for the position they play.- 18 replies

2022 Prospect Previews: Chase Petty
Otaknam replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Petty oozes charisma and charm, which is nice to see. As others have pointed out TJ surgery is always lurking for high octane high school arms. One thing I would add to all of these columns is the height and weight of each prospect. -
Securing Sauce: Should the Twins Extend Mitch Garver?
Otaknam replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’d be reluctant to extend him past the two years he’s under contract. That gives the FO time to see if Jeffers is progressing and is the catcher of the future. -
The Case Against the Twins Trading Luis Arraez
Otaknam replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Arraez a lot, an old fashioned contact hitter who rarely strikes out. Having a surplus of good players at certain positions is a nice problem to have. But if a trade including Arraez can bring a proven young starter I think the FO should consider it. Gordon can serve as the utility player role with a lot more speed than Arraez. The team appears to have a lot of potential young starting pitchers who could make a ML roster. But their lack of proven pitching is the team’s biggest issue right now. -
Part 6: Seth's Top 30 Twins Pitching Prospects (1-5)
Otaknam replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Let’s just hope that several of these pitchers can be effective starters and that at least one of them is a 1 or 2 starter. Twins haven’t had that for awhile, maybe since Liriano.- 33 replies

Speed and ability to hit for average, steal bases, and play excellent defense is a big plus. Power can be over rated. Martin might be a Robin Yount clone offensively. T’ain’t bad! Let’s see what he can do. No trade!

I think it’s a good idea that the Twins, and every team, should do a video tribute at the beginning of each season to prior teammates lost during the past year. This would be consistent with baseball’s emphasis on history and teams could probably work a marketing angle too.

Grading the Twins 2021 Rookie Debuts
Otaknam replied to Andrew Mahlke's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not convinced yet of Ober. He had some good moments but seldom was allowed to pitch into the fifth inning, so his ability to eat innings is unknown. That says fifth starter to me, which would be ok. Hope Baldelli shows a little more trust in him in 2022 and he earns it. Also not too optimistic on Jax but he’ll probably get some more chances.- 40 replies

Martin AND Lewis plus pitchers is too high a price for two years of Castillo, especially since the Buxton extension is not done. How about one of the two from Martin and Lewis, Kepler, and a pitcher.

Should the Twins Trade for Salary Relief?
Otaknam replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton is the BIGGGGG question, so I hope they sign him to an extension. Agree that keeping Sano and Donaldson makes sense given that they won’t get much in return in a trade. I think Sano is a bounce back candidate if he can channel a little Miguel Cabrera and be a professional hitter by hitting the ball where it’s pitched instead of trying to pull every pitch 500 feet. I do look forward to the young MiL starters getting a chance in 2022, and hopefully Baldelli will let them pitch more than four or five innings, as is his head scratching history with Ober.- 23 replies

2022 Offseason Blueprint: Trades for Flaherty, Manaea
Otaknam commented on Cory Engelhardt's blog entry in Cory Engelhardt's Blog
I stand by my previous assessment of this trade. Manea is a solid number 3 starter but is only under contract for one year. If he would agree to adding two more years then make the trade. Otherwise it makes no sense to do this trade. -
2022 Offseason Blueprint: Trades for Flaherty, Manaea
Otaknam commented on Cory Engelhardt's blog entry in Cory Engelhardt's Blog
Trading three top prospects for one year of Manea only makes sense if the Twins believe they are a World Series contender. They aren’t! Silly idea! -
Checking in on the Twins 2021 Draft Class: Part 2
Otaknam commented on Andrew Mahlke's blog entry in Mahlk
Another excellent article! I am curious how Jonathan Lavallee lasted until the 16th round. He was first team All American and All Conference, had great college stats, and has front end starter physicals. His fastball must be low 90s or mediocre secondary pitches. Still an interesting prospect. -
Wow! Some very negative comments lamenting the future that may or may not happen. They absolutely have to sign Buxton long term regardless of his injury history. I’m not a big Sano fan, given his many unprofessional at bats, but he did show some improvement over the last 60 games. So I wouldn’t trade him for a 17 year old in a salary dump. I can see a Donaldson where the Twins have to eat some salary. Berrios gave Toronto what he gave the Twins: every 5 starts he’d pitch really well two times, two mediocre starts, and then he’d struggle or an absolute stinker. That’s who he is, a solid number three starter. I don’t see them dumping Rogers. Miranda will hopefully make the opening day roster. As for free agent pitching I hope they can sign a fairly young starter with a strong upside and hope some of their minor league starting pitchers are ready to take the next step. Realistically they are looking at 2023 unless they go for a complete rebuild, in which case it will be a longer timeline.

Minnesota is Ahead of the Curve with the Sweeper

Random thoughts: I don’t think the Twins will or should trade Polanco, as that would signal they are rebuilding. But clearly a Polanco trade would bring in some high level talent or you don’t trade him. That said it is in their best interests to listen to trade offers on ALL of their players. Signing Buxton has to be the priority as he’s now the face of the franchise. And the last 60 games of Sano’s season makes me somewhat optimistic that he can again be a professional hitter. Also there is finally hope that there is starting pitching talent in their Minor League system. It just needs to get healthy. You can’t have too many arms.

Twins Catcher May Be Marlins Perfect Catch
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn’t see any pitching options in a potential trade with Miami. Seems like that is an essential but missing piece. -
Byron Buxton Isn’t the Next David Ortiz
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have no choice but to sign Buxton for more than they want to pay and hope he can stay healthy. With the stable of promising pitchers in the minors an elite center fielder like Buxton is essential. If they don’t sign him the message is they are in rebuilding mode and the fan base will suffer.- 32 replies

And of course each pick must be judged based on who they passed on when they made their pick. Monday morning quarterbacking.

It’s interesting that so many experts replying here have already decided that Martin and Lewis are not shortstops. I know that they have been moved around to other positions. And Lewis’ injury was a major setback in his evaluation. But unless the Twins actually make a public statement that neither player will be playing shortstop, I will stay optimistic that one or both can play there. That said I wouldn’t make the trade Kepler for Torres trade. You only do that if it is a true upgrade at shortstop and Torres is apparently not that. As a stopgap Polanco back to short and Arraez to second for next year makes sense if no short term solution is available. That give another year to evaluate Lewis and Martin defensively.

Minor League Report (8/19): Oh, ho, ho, it's Maggi(c)!
Otaknam replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Regarding Shulffer, since when is going five innings and striking out five while giving up four runs on seven hits considered a solid a solid start? Any pitcher doing that consistently will have a nice minor league career.- 7 replies
