  1. Similar to Charlie “Shooter” Johnson speculating beyond reality, with his “a little birdie says”.
  2. That trade makes no sense, given the emergence and success both offensively and defensively of Culpepper and Houston in AAA and AA. If the Twins were a real threat for a strong playoff run, and Neto was considered the missing piece, then do it. But that’s not where this team is at.
  3. I think if some team completely blows them away with a trade offer they make the deal. Otherwise, keep Jeffers, try to make the playoffs, and get the compensatory pick in the offseason. The playoffs was unexpected this year, but this team isn’t poised for any serious playoff run. So playing for the future is important to keep in mind.
  4. The Ortiz comparison doesn’t work IMO. Ortiz’ power potential was neutered by the Tom Kelly approach that emphasized contact over power, which is the opposite of what teams preach now. Once Ortiz got to Boston they let him be who he is and the rest is HOF history, possibly the biggest mistake the Twins and Kelly ever made.
  5. I don’t share your belief that Lewis is continuing to get better. He’s batting near the Mendoza line at .210 with 10 homers and not much clutch hitting. He’s not an automatic out but isn’t much better.
  6. I don’t think Lewis’ lack of production has anything to do with social media hype. He just always looks off balance and flailing at sweepers. Social media didn’t cause that. Sadly, it may be time to move on from him.
  7. I think the Twins will trade Jeffers, Bell and Larnach if they can get a fair upside return. But if they keep Ryan I agree that their 2027 rotation looks very solid and has a a chance to be excellent.
  8. I agree. The Twins had a stable of number three and four starters in recent years, which may get you to the playoffs but won’t get it done in the playoffs. You need a bulldog number one or a couple of number twos, like a Clemons or Verlander. The Twins have not had a true number one since Santana and Liriano IMO. Of course, the definition of a number one has changed now that teams are closely regulating innings pitched. Some consider Joe Ryan as top of the rotation. He is pretty good but not the traditional stopper.
  9. I like the Seattle trade for Cade Anderson and Arroyo. Anderson has top of the rotation stuff, so I doubt Seattle would be interested unless they think that Ryan can help them make another strong playoff run.
  10. I have finally concluded that it is time to move on from Lewis. He has had many opportunities to recover from his offensive funk, but I see no evidence that he is capable of succeeding. Every bat he lunges and is off balance, and clearly cannot hit a good curve ball drifting away from him. Stick with Lee at third for now, bring up Culpepper for shortstop, and trade Lewis so he gets a fresh start. He isn’t helping this team very much.
  11. Roden is the obvious guy to send down. He had a brief moment in the lineup but has struggled lately with a .190 BA and .470 OPS. Martin bat right handed, which is to his benefit in this situation. It’s time to look to the future with these young players like Jenkins and Culpepper. Also, I think they will trade Jeffers to get something, rather than letting him walk for nothing, especially if they flounder over the next ten days.
  12. My thoughts exactly! This is a mediocre team playing above its weight class.
  13. No to acquiring Miller. This team is a fringe playoff team with a .500 record. Do not sacrifice your future high end talent unless it is for minor league prospects who you do not value.
  14. I was a big Earl Battey fan. But I am hoping Lackey is has a higher offensive ceiling than Earl, with more projectable power and much more speed ( I remember when the slug footed Battey was thrown out at first base on a single to right). But Battey was an excellent defensive catcher. During the 1962 season, Battey set a remarkable Major League record by picking off 13 baserunners in a single year! And he caught over 40% of base stealers too, which is elite. By contrast, HOF Iván "Pudge" Rodríguez holds the Major League Baseball record for the most career pickoffs by a catcher, recording 88 throughout his 21-season career average 4 per year. But MLB didn’t start tracking this statistic during Battey’s playing career, so it might be higher than 88.
  15. He looks like a great pick. But I want to wait and see how his transition into pro ball goes, likely low A at Fort Myers. In the meantime I would slot him number 4 until he proves it.
  16. I think the Twins need to sign Lackey before they reveal where they would start him. My guess is High A Cedar Rapids but it could be Fort Myers low A to get him acclimated.
  17. I wonder if they would take Flora at number three, given his upside as a top of the rotation starter. As we know, you never have enough starting pitching. Otherwise, whomever is left from Emerson or Lackey seem like the choice. As for Marek, Houston, let’s hope he keeps hitting because being a great fielding shortstop doesn’t verify your number one draft status if you can’t hit and show some power. But I like his results so far, and he can steal a base too, a skill that would be lost if Rocco was still the manager.
  18. This column is very fair and accurate. This is the third consecutive year Lewis has performed poorly offensively, in a position where solid offensive numbers are expected. It would not longer be a surprise if Culpepper is brought up to play shortstop and Lee moves to third, where his lack of speed won’t be as important. This assumes Lee continues to be successful offensively. Let’s see what Culpepper does offensively. It can’t be much worse than Lewis.
  19. A positive outing for a big league debut. Great slider and 97mph fastball, with some solid secondary pitches. Let’s hope his arm holds up and he gets more starts to build his innings and stamina. Rojas also managed two scoreless innings in his debut. 3 walks, though, so his command needs to improve. But he looks like he has a couple of above average pitches, a good sign! Now let’s hope Able doesn’t have arm trouble and he comes back soon.
  20. Flora has a chance to be a number one starter, given his stuff, velocity, and command. When was the last time the Twins had a real number one inning eater, like a Verlander or Roger Clemens, someone you can count on to stop a losing streak? Liriano? I know the definition of a number one starter has changed, and no one throws 250 innings anymore. I view Ryan and Lopez as number two starters, which isn’t bad. But I really like adding Flora to the rotation.
  21. LeBron, Flora and Emerson are all possibilities. Flora as a potential top line starter would deviate from what they usually do. But given his success this year he could be the guy.
  22. Bell is a switch hitter w proven power, so a right handed bat was needed with the lefty dominated roster. Larnach should have been the odd man out, but for some reason was not released.
