He is not even close to first in OPS, Jeffers and Buxton are well in front of him and so is Larnach.  He is third in RBI's with 71 because he has been hitting in the 3-5 spots in the order consistently most of the year, I would like to have more if you are hitting in those spots.

The guy who's first in OPS among qualified hitters on the team should not be getting so much scorn.

9-65 when trailing after 6 now.

Damnit! If we were just 5% more effective (and lucky) in closing out games, we could have at least 6-10 more wins. I swear there have been five games alone where we missed a game-winning homer in the ninth by a few feet. Like today with Jeffers. That's gotta be a homer in at least 25 of 30 ballparks.

Billionaires don't become billionaires by giving up income.  And not all expenses end with a lockout.  And there are a vast majority of players who are not millionaires.  And they are ones that will become more vocal when checks are missed.  Unfortunately it is the agents of the top players pushing the agenda but there comes a point every time where the lower level players start demanding to be heard.  Yes even the minimum salary is more than you and I will make but it is for a limited time and they need to maximize their earnings.

I agree. And don't you think that because this chasm is coming that a lot of the actual talk should have started a year ago?

The demands the owners have put out are basically all non-starters for the players it seems, at least the big picture stuff. You can't wave that away and just magically get along again.

I truly hope I'm wrong. Part of me is ready for the 2029 season being the next full one. I truly hope I'm wrong about that.

4 double plays were the problem!

If fans really want to influence things to get a quicker settlement, particularly if they are pro-player, they should start boycotting all of the games immediately, including the playoffs. Player salaries are guaranteed, so they won't lose any income, but owners would take a big hit.

People generally can't all collectively protest things that actually matter in the world because people generally can't agree on what matters.

Why would enough people protest baseball's salary cap when all the food is contaminated and jobs are scarce and public lands are being sold off and everything else is being treated like private equity?

Baseball is way low on the list of things that actually matter.

Negotiations unfortunately work best when there is a deadline.  A year ago there was no sense of urgency, so yes they should have been talking but it is not surprising they weren't.  And the cap is a non starter for less than 5% of the players because they are the ones that want the $500-$700m dollar contracts.  I am waiting for the other 95% to start speaking up and see where it goes.

That's exactly what Tom Glavine said recently on Jeff Passan's podcast. It's going to be a very risky game of chicken for awhile...

Anyway, I need to find a new hobby after being absolutely wrecked by this team lately. 🙃

The main problem with Royce isn't that he has bad skills; he in fact seems gifted.

The main problem with Royce is that bad pitchers and good pitchers can get him out by pitching to his weaknesses, such as outside, and he refuses to adjust.

That is a part of Bad skills, plus his throwing is truly bad, often.

It wasn't scorn, it was a critique of what I think his best role is on a contending team.  We are 8 games below .500,  so maybe relying on someone like Clemens doesn't relate to wins.  We need more talent so that he can be in a better role to help the team.

I agree, but is baseball still at the same level? Probably. Owners wouldn't be selling for billions of dollars and wanting new stadiums, even in Las Vegas, if they didn't think the future was bright for them.

I bet baseball fans in West Sacramento are glad teams going looking for new stadiums, at least for awhile😁

Some would not agree about another sport...that holy sport of football..even the college players are getting paid...just now..if you were a pro and still have eligibility at a univ...like LSU...go back and they will give you a free ride..probably earn some money...maybe even be redrafted  .if that is possible..or be picked up again...money is football....they are going international big time and Netflix and the rest want action. ...people complain about the cost of living..I agree with you...BUT

Those are true, but are people really doing much about those issues either? The reason why people don't boycott is not because they're worried about contaminated food or myriad other problems in the world but because people would prefer not to sacrifice something today even if it meant they would have something better or avoid pain tomorrow. When and if a lockout comes, fans can remember that they didn't do what they could to create an incentive to solve it sooner.

Sure, but more gains would come first from improving all the other slots with even lower OPS.

And I hope good comes for all. I do. I just don't know that I see an owner for any mlb team actually caring about the opinions of the fans. Not really. I'd love to be wrong.

You can say all the mean things you want about them on baseballtalk.com and they won't care too much, but a boycott that hit their revenues while their costs were stable would get their attention - much more than the promises to boycott that will come during the lockout.

I hope so, truly. I hope so.

Thanks. I now understand you're the arbiter of truth and reason.

If your 2B has a higher OPS than your LF, RF, 3B, and 1B, and at lower cost than two of them, you think it doesn't make sense to worry about the other positions before you worry about your 2B?

There is more than one criteria to measure a player by.  And yes we need a talent upgrade on the roster so that we can use someone like Clemens in a role he is suited for, a super utility guy playing 3 to 4 days a week.  I would prefer him pinch hitting then some of the players we have been rolling out there all year in late inning situations.  If he is starting at 2B to start the season it will just mean more of the same.

Pissing and moaning about Clemens being the problem is silly. Because of his production this year is a main reason why we are 8 games below.500 instead of 15 or 20 below.

Every Twins fan knows that ownership and front office is the reason for this futility year after year…… your incessant ridicule of Clemens has become inane and boorish.

Enjoy the rest of the season

Yeah you are right he is worth 7 to 12 wins, give me a break.  And it's not about Clemens it is about the makeup of this roster.  You aren't going to win consistently relying on someone like Clemens to play everyday and hitting in the middle of the roster.  Upgrade the roster so he is in a position to be better utilized.

Ownership doesn't build the roster, the front office does.  It was the Pohlad's fault for not firing Falvey two years ago that has set this team back, but that is where their responsibility lies.

You want to disagree fine, but you can be civil without insults.
