4 runs... 1 RBI via W and one on HP and 2 solo HR.

More gross incompetence at the plate again today.  This show is getting very very old.

The bullpen has been asked to fill more and more innings. I guess conventional knowledge tells us that starting pitchers poop their beds after 100 pitches, but couldn't guys like Paddack, Ober, Ryan, and Matthews be allowed to throw 99 pitches? It might help long term. Or is that crazy? Once upon a time the manager would look to pull the starting pitcher after 120 pitches unless they were sailing free and clear. Then the number went to 110 more or less. Then 100 pitches became the load for starters. The Twins are getting ahead of the crowd by lifting their arms somewhere around 80 pitches. Does this have a residual effect long term on the fellows in the bullpen?

Crazy watching these college World Series games and seeing guys that are supposed to be 1st round picks (Arnold at FSU and Coastal guy today) throwing 100+ pitches and some 120+ is bizarre.  IMO—-if gonna tear your UCL or rotator cuff, it’s gonna happen weather you throw 100 pitches or 80 pitches in a start.  SMH

Just when you think maybe the Twins have turned a corner, they snap you right back to reality.  This team is just like the rest of the just above .500 teams fighting for a wild card spot.  Okay, but inconsistent and unpredictable.  The only thing predictable is the likelihood that if Jax enters the game, the odds are good that he'll blow a lead.  Same old same old with this team.

Detroit is the cream of the AL Central.  So, who cares about the rest of the schleps trying to stay alive.

They should have scored more. But when you have the lead going into the 8th with Jax and Duran you should win.

Such is life for an 80-85 win team. Hope to beat up on the bad teams, Lose most series to the best teams. Try to split with the other .500 teams. As much as I try to see the upside in every player, the truth is this is a .500-ish team with on paper slightly above average pitching and horribly inconsistent hitting, with enough shakiness on defense to never allow you to be comfortable. In previous years that was good enough for the AL Central. Not so much anymore. It’s just how this year is going to be.

How????

Not a Rocco apologist at all, but you got six innings from your starter, and you turn over the game to rested Varland, Jax and Duran. What should he have done?

My point would be bringing in the closer when you are behind it’s something he’s not accustomed to. My guess the intensity level (right or wrong) is not the same as coming in for the save.

Twins are actually outperforming their talent more or less. Line up the Twins versus Detroit, Cleveland, and Kansas City position by position. Which players do you pick? The Twins are getting good pitching but if management pulls the starters at 80 pitches on a routine basis the bullpen is bound to hit the wall. Starter usually say they have good stuff 40% of the time, are just ok a little more than 40% of the time, and have to fight every inning on about 20% of the time. One should prbably expect the relievers to also face similar odds.

In any event the Twins are capable of reaching the playoffs but will need some guys to step forward.
