The Rule 5

I saw on MLB Trade Rumors, that there's talk of possibly ending the Rule 5 clause. Rule 5 has been around since 1920, that was adapted to keep players from being trapped in the minors for teams additional depth. Thus the 40 man roster & Rule 5 draft came to being. There are some that have expressed distaste for it and would like to eliminate it. Personally I'd like to keep it, even though the Twins have been burned by it lately.

There are 3 reasons why I like to keep it. #1 is as previous stated it liberates good minor league players to become MLB players sooner. #2 it gives a leg up for struggling teams to compete. #3 it forces GMs to better evaluate their players.

What are your ideas?

Last I heard was the Rule 5 Draft is going to happen once they sign a new Contract.

It is but what he is saying is there is a chance it would no longer exist after that. I've heard it the last few days elsewhere that is a possibility but this years will happen regardless.

If the Twins keep losing players to the MLB Rule 5, then some kind of mechanism to expedite development and promotion needs to continue. I like the rule 5 draft as that mechanism and think that is a part of the rich history of MLB that makes it unique in sport.

I hope it continues.  It's not as impactful as it once was, but still serves a valuable purpose as a check on stashing players who deserve a chance.

Do you have a specific link about this? I've searched MLB Trade Rumors and didn't see anything about the possibility of ending/eliminating the Rule 5 draft. There was talk of this year's MLB Rule 5 draft being indefinitely postponed and now they say it will happen after the lockout

here's a small sample I found. Some other place stated that some people had a distaste for the rule 5. Not a lot about this topic.

I read that one. Cancelled altogether, though, was meant just for this season, as I read it. I  must have just misunderstood your initial post as I thought you had read somewhere that there was talk of it going away completely, forever, and not just during the lockout season

If the CBA somehow ended up reducing service time and years of team control, the Rule 5 might become obsolete all on it's own.

The CBA codifies the drafts (rule 4 and rule 5) right? Fees and whether or not to continue to do it would certainly be up for negotiations except that major leaguers don’t really care about what happens to minor leaguers.

There should have been a pop rock group called "The Rule 5."

I haven't seen anything suggesting either side is pushing to get rid of the Rule 5 moving forward. There was talk of it being cancelled for this season, but I didn't see any talk of it not being part of the next CBA.

I can't imagine the players would go for that. They want to get the best players to the bigs as quickly as possible so they can start getting paid as quickly as possible. They wouldn't be accepting of anything that allows teams to keep good players in the minors for longer than they already can.
