Anibal Sanchez: 2.77 ERA, 55 IP, 68Ks, ERA+ of 158 going into tonite where he was two outs away from a no hitter before Mauer broke it up. Had to settle for a 1 hit complete game shutout.

Sanchez had 12 strikeouts tonight. Twins starters have 12 over their last 6 starts combined. Good thing K's don't have much to do with pitching well...

Coming into today, Twins leadoff hitters had combined for a .176/.229/.211 line.

Because K's are not the end-all, be-all of pitching. They require a pitcher to throw more pitches, therefore limiting their innings, and when you have a shaky bullpen, that's not a good thing. Of the Tiger's pitchers, Fister is 54th in pitches per PA, and every other Tiger SP is 80th or worse (Scherzer at 80, Sanchez at 82, Porcello at 84, Verlander at 92). While K's may be an indicator of consistency, and might be a consistent 6 innings. In my opinion, you're just as well off having guys who produce ground balls, keep the ball in the park when they don't, and induce weak contact.

The Twins have 84 fewer K's than the 29th Ranked team, the Rockies. The Rockies have 83 fewer strikeouts than the 12th ranked team, the Dodgers. But don't worry it's not an organizational philosophy, the Twins just makes sure to bring in pitchers that don't have a history of striking guys out. Good thing Ryan was focused on improving the pitching this off-season, think how these numbers would look if he had just ignored it.

I'd have to go dig out the thread from several weeks ago - and probably won't :) - but my takeaway was that it's closer than you might think. Weighing against the fact that several pitches need to be expended to gain the strikeout, is that when the ball is put in play, some percentage of the time it will fall in for a hit, wasting the pitches thrown in that PA.

 

Now, walks, I'm pretty sure, are bad bad bad by this analysis.

I searched, but couldn't find any site that was tracking average innings per GS. You may well be right, but I could very easily see this being a bias the facts don't reflect.

 

Detroit: 452.1 from their starters in 77 starts. or about 5.9IP per start

Twins: 412 IP from their starters in 75 starts. Or about 5.5IP per GS.

 

So if the effort on the Twins part is to avoid Ks to rack up innings, it's ridiculously unsuccessful by comparison.

The difference is not as great as you think. Strikeout pitchers tend to be better pitchers, for one. If they can throw a pitch that a batter will miss entirely, then it stands to reason that when the batter makes contact, it's not going to be strong contact.

 

Second, close to one third of all fair ball contact ends up a base hit. That never happens with a strikeout. Pitch to less batters, throw more pitches to each batter, end up at nearly the same place.

 

I'll take the strikeout guy every time and the math backs it up.
