benhertz Provisional Member Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 The Oakland A's designated Travis Blackley LHP for assignment. I wanted the Twins to claim Blackley last May when the Giants designated him for assignment and Pavano was trying to pitch with a bum shoulder. Blackley's stats on Baseball-Reference, Fangraphs. The Boston Red Sox released Ryan Sweeney RF/CF. I would prefer Sweeney over Wilkin Ramirez, even though Sweeney is another LH hitter. Video of Sweeney hitting a triple, and a double. I would take Jim Thome over Sweeney and Ramirez, but that doesn't seem likely to happen.
Top Gun Provisional Member Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 The Twins can't afford to do anything, the 40 man is full, besides the Twins already got all the best players.
old nurse Verified Member Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Sweeney's numbers are better than Ramirez, but not so much that it becomes must have. One of the experts will have to say if it is better to have a lefty of the bench for the light hitters on the Twins or not.Blackey had a great half year last year.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I like Wilkin Ramirez. Let's give him a chance, and if/when he struggles, we dump him for someone else who's in the garbage heap.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Blackey had a great half year last year. This is one of the reasons that the Twins will never sign Blackley. Gardy will confuse him with Blackie.

cmathewson Provisional Member Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 None of the above. We've got six pitchers recovering from injury, and two are very close. We've got good depth at AAA.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Agreed, I see no reason to nibble at the edges with older players that just aren't that good. Not sure what that does for this year, or beyond. I'd rather they trade for Profar, since the Rangers look to be signing Andrus to a LONG term deal.

I think there is probably only one player in our organization that the Rangers would consider trading Profar for, and that is Mauer.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 i would not offer 1 player for Profar, probably Morneau, Arcia, Wimmers, something like that. The Rangers just signed AJ, but have no real 1B right now. Arcia gives them a player at a position that reguires 2-3 players, and Wimmers is a flyer. That might not be enough....but it should be.

As the season progresses, the Rangers are sure to be a team that will have key injuries to replace and /or holes to plug, in order to make a decent run to October 1. The Twins would be guilty of malpractice not to have their ducks in order if/when the Rangers come calling with Profar on the table (hopefully one of their young catchers would be thrown in as well- in a multi-player exchange- it would definitely hurt losing an Arcia, and maybe something else of higher prospect value, but this is the deal that at least gives the Twins a chance to accelerate the climb back to relevance). Oh, and pay the underage Cuban defector what it takes to get him, as well.

Let me rephrase: The Rangers wouldnt be interested in any PACKAGE we could offer that doesnt involve Mauer. I doubt they'd have interest in Morneau. Mike Olt will be up by June 1, and while Arcia is a good prospect, he's not in Profar's stratosphere.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I concur with Mr. Brooks. Remember, Profar is the reigning #1 in BA's Top 100 (also #1 according to mlb.com). It's not often a guy currently ranked that high is traded -- Delmon was already through his (somewhat disapponting) rookie season and thus off the list when he was dealt, and even that trade was a bit of a blockbuster (Garza was ranked #21 and Bartlett was still a pre-arb starting shortstop). Jesus Montero was ranked #3 when traded for Michael Pineda (ranked #16 before a very promising rookie season where he made the all-star team). Paul Konerko was #2 when he was first traded back in 1998. By comparison, Arcia is ranked #41 by BA this year, and only #93 by MLB.com. And he hasn't been ranked previously. Indeed, he only has 1 full year of full season baseball, he's two years older than Profar, and plays a corner position.

You make a strong case, it would take a lot in talent, and a lot of desperation for the Rangers to pull the trigger. The Rangers have Kinsler signed through 2017 and Andrus through 2018 (or longer by player option). Must be nice to have BOTH a 2B and SS who are either, still young and still climbing in the case of Andrus, or in their prime, in the case of Kinsler, AND are both consensus-projected to be about 4.4 WAR players in 2013, AND you have the #1 prospect in baseball who also happens to play the same positions.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Oh, i don't think they'd do it, but I'd try.....as for not trading him, this is a team playing for right now and the next year or two. A team willing to spend money. Mike Olt has proven nothing, whereas Morneau would crush that park. Throw in half the minors if you want, you win with starters, not scrubs. But I agree, they should hold out for something else, like Price or Stanton or some other great player close to a big pay day. But the Twins don't have one of those, so offer what you do have.
benhertz Provisional Member Posted June 29, 2013 Author Posted June 29, 2013 Alex Liddi is a 24-year old 3rd baseman who has occasionally played 1B and LF. He is listed as 6'4", 225 lbs, RHB. Liddi was a teammate of Chris Colabello and Drew Butera during the World Baseball Classic. According to MLBTradeRumors, Liddi is the first born-and-bred Italian to play in Major League Baseball. I'm sure Gene Glynn can find a spot for him in Rochester.
Red Bull Provisional Member Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 Honestly any of these moves are worthless and not worthy of discussion. Just a bunch of lost players that are barely in the league.

He's 24, so possibly may have some upside, though keep in mind that someone needs to be shed from the 40 man to claim him. Next question is how many options he has left. I'm guessing b/c he was DFAd that he has 0. If that's the case, he has to be on the major league roster, not in Rochester. Everyone else discussed in this thread though hasn't really excited me.
AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 "Everyone else discussed in this thread though hasn't really excited me.". Not even Profar?
benhertz Provisional Member Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 The Orioles have acquired Alex Liddi. LINK The Orioles and Mariners swapped international slot money, with the Mariners increasing their amount by $73,700. I thought teams could just claim a player, without having to trade anything to receive player, two examples being the Twins losing Joe Benson and Tyler Robertson to waiver claims.

There is a window for trade when someone is DFA. The Orioles thought a team with a worse record than they have would put a claim if so they would have to trade for him.
