I believe the runner always has the right of way, as they cannot leave the base path without being calling out.

 

i believe a defensive player always has the right of way in making a legitimate defensive play.

Chief’s right about fielding the ball, I’m just not sure running to the bag qualifies as fielding.

 

To get the ball, the fielder has precedence. But after that, I suspect the runner gets precedence or fielders could just stand in the way of runners.

not without the ball, but they can WITH the ball.

 

You'll sometimes see a second baseman block the bag with his leg, for example, and as long as he's making a play, he has priority to the space. Or a first baseman standing in the baseline between home and first to tag a hitter on a ground ball.

Sucks that this game had to be the one where the Twins are the "visiting" team, I would love to see a walk-off...

 

Donaldson got damn lucky that he didn't get rung up, but I'll take it.
