Doogie says they didn't even attempt to top the 5/$85 he got from the D-Backs.

Would you if you called his agent, asked what he was looking for, told them what you were thinking as a starting number, and were told he had no interest? He didn't want to play here. Wheeler didn't want to play here. Is there maybe something the team could do to change that? I don't know. We can't change being in the Midwest or the American League. Nobody else was willing to go far enough beyond the 5 years and 85 to convince him otherwise either. So are the Twins the only stupid team or are all the teams stupid? Do you think it's worth losing Berrios in order to have him for 5 years?

I can't put this on the Pohlads. I guarantee they didn't tell Falvey to cut $20 million in payroll after a 100 win season with massive attendance increases.

You're probably right. My guess is the boys are trying to prove how much smarter they are than everyone else.

In any one case that could be true. But the "no one wants to play here" blanket excuse is tired. The Brewers, White Sox and Co. all sign FA's to bigger contracts that we ever do. In this case, his agent said it wasn't the case, and Doogie says the Twins wouldn't go to 5 years. So we're flushing 2020 to worry about 2024. Again.

So many statements about the Twins "deciding" not to sign MadBum or trade for Kluber or Stroman or any other move people wanted to see. Do you guys realize that the Twins don't get to just say "We want Bum for 5 years 100 instead of your 5 years 85" and suddenly he's there. How many national reporters need to come out saying that he had no desire to play in MN before you guys believe it? He was never coming here unless the Twins added a 6th year and an insane amount of extra money. He's a human! He gets to pick where he signs!

If someone was going to offer me twice as much as what I made now, but had to live in Alabama I would say NO.  So much is made of the free will of players and yet some of the same folks who think players are worth every dollar they get can't wrap their arms around this one.

And why do you think was?  Read the post I just quoted.

Smarter than the 29 other teams that didn’t sign him because they also didn’t sign him? I know you’re just being glib, but you see how that claim blows up on the launch pad, right?

"He didnt want to play here."

This is, IMO, lamest of the lame excuses we hear/read about the Twins failures.

Seems like there should be a clinical name for this phenomena. How about Selective Acknowledgment?

I listen to the MLB network on satellite radio. It's nice to get an unbiased / outside perspective. The front office with Duquette and Bowden. It's great to get the perspective of men that have actually held GM jobs.

Why? Do you work somewhere you don't want to work? Have you moved across the country to do a job that isn't what you really want to be doing in a place you don't really want to be doing it?

Why the HELL should the Twins go five years for this guy?  He's declined sharply.  He hardly throws that four seamer anymore and he isn't nearly the guy he was.   WHY WHY WHY do we give him five years?  Because he is "MadBum"??

Honestly, getting him is just paying for a name.  He isn't Madison Bumgarner anymore.

Exactly. If the Twins offered him 5/$100, he'd be a Twin. No he probably wouldn't come here for equal offers. So you pony up a little more. He could fly his family in every week-end.

This isn't specific to Bumgarner, so no, it doesn't. They did nothing at the deadline, and they're well on their way to doing nothing this offseason. They're trying to prove that their system and way of doing business is superior to spending money because it makes them look better than if they were to simply cut checks.

Major League Baseball will presumably exist after 2020.

Ah, yes, "there's always next year." The perpetual battle cry of Minnesota sports fans.

Why would you give Garret Cole 9 years. FA starters almost always require you to risk bad years at the end of them. That's just the way it is.

If you have a window to win, you have to be willing to risk a bad contract or two 5-6 years from now. Otherwise you will never, ever play in FA and you will forever be the Little Team that could who gets steamrolled by the Yankees in the 1st round.

The only thing lamer than the "he wouldn't play here" excuse is the "Yeah well every other team passed on him too" excuse. That can literally apply to every FA ever. Give me a break.

Because that's what has been leaked to the local media, presumably by the bros upstairs pulling the strings.

I didn't say "no one wants to play here" I said Bumgarner and Wheeler didn't want to play here. Are you trying to be the Brewers and the White Sox? I mean they aren't exactly the toast of the league. The idea that they're "flushing" 2020 because they aren't throwing out bad contracts doesn't make any sense to me. If they gave MadBum 5 years and 100 mil how do you think the next 5 years go? What percent chance do you give them for getting past the Yanks this year. You know, the team that swept them and now signed the best pitcher on the planet. Does MadBum really get us passed them now? I say no. So now the Twins would still not win the WS in 2020, but since they paid him that money they also can't keep the core of the team into the future and are rebuilding again in 2024. So you would prefer they "go for it this year" by throwing out what the league clearly feels is a bad contract in order to feel like they're really trying, but then send us back into the unwatchable years we just got out of?

Not making an excuse. I’m saying the contract he signed isn’t something I would support. His durability and deterioration are great concerns for me. I want value and this FA pitching market doesn’t offer a lot of value.

They made multiple trades at the deadline. The Dyson deal didn’t work out, but Romo put up a lot of quality, important innings down the stretch. I feel like you aren’t actually interested in discussing this.

I don't think 5 years 100 would have gotten it done. It's less than a 20% raise. Would you move across the country to a place you don't want to be for a job that doesn't really cover your desired job description for an extra 20% bump in pay? I sure wouldn't.

There is no indication that MadBaum said he wouldn't play here.

Does he get us passed the Yankees alone? No. Let's say Berrios steps up into an ace. He wins game 1. Now we roll out MadBaum, Odo and Pineda in games 2-4. Does that give us a better shot to win 2 more than Odo, Pineda and Smeltzer? Yes.

Ah, yes, "there's always next year." The perpetual battle cry of Minnesota sports fans.

Nope. I want them to be good every year for as long as possible. I want them to have Berrios locked down before he hits free agency and quadruples in price. They can extend him and make short term moves to improve the roster. For example, I’d like them to try and pry either Ian Anderson or Kyle Wright from Atlanta. I think Ryu could be a good free agent pick up, but I wouldn’t go longer than 3 years if it was my name in the paper.

Not when you're a multimillionaire already. Is that your sales pitch to MadBum? You don't want to be here, but sometimes you have to do crappy things you don't want to do so we'll see you in MN this year. Sounds effective.
