4/26 - Magill Activated, De Jong Outrighted

The Twins announced this morning that the Twins activated RH RP Matt Magill from the Injured List.

In other news, the Twins also announced that Chase De Jong had been outrighted to Rochester.

That puts the Twins at 39 on their 40-man roster. That would open up a roster spot when needed.

Mike Morin makes the most sense to take it ,though Jake Reed would be a fun story too.

Interesting note from Jeremy:

Find the DeJong move interesting.  Are they planning on adding someone such as Seth suggested?  Or are they looking outside the organization, either waivers or trade?

Can't let a poor minor league player get service time!

Actually, De Jong could get more service time with this move.

If he stayed on the 40-man roster just 2 days longer, so he had 20+ days on optional assignment, he would have only received service time for the 4 days he spent on the 25-man roster earlier this season. No service time credit for the days spent on optional assignment.

But by removing him now, shy of 20 days on optional assignment, he will get service time for those 4 days, plus the 18 days he spent on optional assignment. (Assuming he isn't re-added to the 40-man later this season.)

I'm sure he'd rather stay on the 40-man, to be closer to a call-up, but a few more days service towards his pension/benefits is probably a decent consolation prize.

Having been outrighted before, De Jong had the right to elect free agency upon being outrighted again. But apparently he has chosen to defer that right until after the season (assuming he isn't added back to a 40-man roster at that time).

Had he not been added back and then outrighted a second time, he would have been eligible for minor league free agency following the season anyway (again assuming he isn't added back to a 40-man roster at that time).

Can you repeat that stuff about the thingy....

I hope not. Morin, Harper and Magill? I don't know if I can handle that many journeyman-vet feel-good stories on one team.

I'd rather finally give Reed or Eades a look or call up Cody Stashak right from AA. Looks like all three of those guys are getting groomed as multi inning relievers; all are averaging 1.5-2 innings per outing.
