Surprised that Stewart and Vasquez did not get longer looks.  Rest are youngsters just getting a taste of major league camp.

I think it's a matter of guy's with options left being the first to go.  I think they also want to get them over to the minor league camp to establish their places on the AAA/AA rosters.

actually, it usually has to do with the guys with options getting ML service time if they get hurt in big league camp.

Anyone with options who has no real chance of making the team gets optioned at first cuts.

I was surprised to see Kohl Stewart included in the first round of cuts too. But on reflection, it's not the end of the world for him and not a huge shock. I think a few more months of AAA seasoning would do him some good.

Do Stewart and Vasquez both have "no real chance" of making the team? I wouldn't say either is likely, but both finished 2018 in MLB. They're also both marginal enough prospects at this point that I don't think the Twins would particularly care if they each collected some service time on the MLB DL.

Edit to add: given our roster, Vasquez is pretty unlikely to make it this spring. But the pen is a little more open from the right side, and if one believed the Stewart hype around here lately, one would probably want him to be in the mix for a spot...

I think they probably want to keep Stewart starting for awhile. He would likely be one of top three choices at Rochester, in case of injury. To me, he is similar to Gibson in stuff, and young enough to get better. He has been pretty durable too. To me, ground ball pitchers work better as starters, rather than end of the game relievers. He could be be a multi inning guy, but the Twins have other guys who can fill that spot.

apparently they didn't have a real chance :)

I get what you're saying though. Both names are a bit surprising in that regards. Sounds like the FO had no plans for them to come north.
