My Offseason Plan

Hey guys, been a frequent of the site for a long time but new to posting on here. I just finished reading the Offseason Handbook and I think we are in a unique situation this year.  Woke up early, was bored and felt like being GM for a morning. With the luxury of money we have to spend here is how I would go about our off-season.

Free Agent Signings
1B/3B/DH Josh Donaldson (1 yr/16M): He is top of my list given he will likely only require a 1 year deal. If we become sellers could be a great trade chip.
2B Logan Forsythe (1 yr/3M): 2B is a huge hole for us. He showed promise post-deadline with us. Small risk to be a decent stop gap until Gordon (assuming he gets moved to 2B) is ready.
1B//DH Adams (1yr/8M): In my mind a perfect compliment to LH DH Austin.
RP Andrew Miller (2 yr/12M): Gm's know him well from Cleveland and he's coming off an injury-plaugued season. Feel he is a great bounce back candidate (K/9 was over 12).
RP Jeurys Familia (3 yr/39M): We get our closer for the foreseeable future
SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (2 yr/30M): We could really use a LH SP in our rotation. Guy has been injury prone in the past but he is my top choice for FA SP to add this year. He is lethal when healthy.

2019 Roster
C  Castro       8M
C  Garver       550K
1B  Austin      550K
1B  Adams     8M
2B  Forsythe  3M
SS  Polanco   600K
3B  Sano        3M
3B  Donaldson 16M
OF  Kepler     3M
OF  Buxton    2M
OF  Rosario   4M
4TH OF  Cave  550K
UTL  Adrianza  2M

TOTAL  42.2M

All 3 FA signings are on one year deals so if it doesn't work out, no harm no foul. Gives the young guys one more year to see what we got and we can head into the 2020 season knowing for sure what gaps to fill. Honestly, I could go either way with Forsythe. I think we probably go with a vet here though and wait for to see if/when Gordon can take the reigns. You can really insert an vet on the cheap.

2018 STARTER/PEN

SP  Berrios     600K
SP  Gibson     8.5M
SP  Ryu          7.5
SP  Pineda     15
SP  Odorizzi   10
LONG MAN  Meja   550K
RH RP  Hildenberger   600K
RH RP  May       1.5M
RH RP  Reed      8.5M
LH RP  Miller      12M
LH RO  Rogers   1.5M
CL  Familia          13M

TOTAL  78.25M

My hope going into the offseason is we sign two high impact RP and one SP with good upside.  Of my FA signings only one, Familia, gets a 3 year pact.

TOTAL 2019 TWINS SALARY - 121.45M

This salary seems within our means and is probably less than we are projected to have for a team salary. If we compete, if gives us a little wiggle room to make a deadline deal. If we struggle, we should have some nice pieces to trade. Note: I based my FA signing salaries on the Handbook.

That's all I got, let me know how you think I did. Glad to be joining the Twins Daily community!

Glad you woke up bored.

If these moves were the result of the off-season, I wouldn't have any complaints.

Not bad, but I would personally go for some longer deals so the Twins aren't rebuilding every year. Josh Donaldson for 1 yr/$16M is fine, but why not a younger guy for 3 yr/$48M? The payroll for the year lands in the exact same spot. It takes more than one year, usually, for a team to gel.

Plus, first basemen are probably the least risky position to staff for when it comes to injuries. Go for the gold!

Which younger guy can play 3B and 1B and hit do you like?

I'd probably sign Donaldson to a 1 year deal with a team option.....maybe even a two year deal.

Good question. I have no idea -- looking at free agents in the very early stages isn't something I find enjoyable. It feels like looking at a luxury catalog or lottery numbers, especially when teams keep their cards close to their chests. In other words, anything I pine for isn't likely to happen.

But Donaldson for 2-3 years? Sure. It would have to be a couple of years for the Twins to pick him up anyway because someone else will give him multiple years. $16M is also too low to land him...so if the budget is $16M for a player, yes, the Twins could find someone else (and would have to).

But, as I said, let's go for the gold.

Tyler Austin is a right-handed hitter, and if Rhu costs a draft pick, I am not sure I want him. If he does not cost a pick then that is a different matter all together.

According to MLBTR Ryu has received a Qualifying Offer so depending on the contract and all that goes with it he WILL cost a draft pick

Here's their full list of players receiving a QO

Patrick Corbin, SP, Diamondbacks
Yasmani Grandal, C, Dodgers
Bryce Harper, OF, Nationals
Dallas Keuchel, SP, Astros
Craig Kimbrel, RP, Red Sox
A.J. Pollock, OF, Diamondbacks
Hyun-Jin Ryu, SP, Dodgers

Nice first effort. Donaldson's salary does look low.  Miller's salary is definitely low. 7-man bullpen may not work when 8-man is de rigueur.

There just isn't a lot of options in the corner infield this year.  You won't be enamored with any of the choices if you look at what's out there.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Agreed on Ryu. With he QO it makes me much less inclined to sign him. Sorry on my RHB/LHB mixup (I did this very early this morning). I think what made me so excited is this is truly a season defining off season for us. We could, theoretically, sign Machado or Harper or Corbin. Or, we could go my offseason rote abd aign short term/ high upside guys.

It’s fun bc we’ve never really had this kind of spending and I am truly excited about our offseason for the first in a long time ! Wise from my offseason plans, and discussed at length on this site, we also have significant depth to make some trades as well!

Long story longer, it’s gonba be a helluva fun offseason !
