people seem to be forgetting this part......

Not forgetting it, but you also have guys like dozier, Mauer, Kepler and sano/buxton who have regressed or been terrible all year. Does the coach get blame for that or?

Posted

agree, cheaper to fire the coach, but the 5-9 guys in the order were brought in by the current front office

I mean, to be fair, Adrianza is starting because Polanco got himself popped for PED's, which is also why Motter is on the team.  Wilson is here because Castro got hurt. Cave is here because Buxton has been hurt/terrible (besides which he is 25 and only has 25 career AB's), and Morrison was a perfectly fine signing that has cratered in a way no one could have foreseen.  I'm as frustrated as anyone, but it's not exactly easy to park quality 3rd catchers/5th outfielders/backup utility infielders at AAA.

Today's pop quiz: What do the lady in the purple dress and the Twins have in common?

I don't know, but what I can tell you is that she has more punch than this lineup.

Lots of teams get injuries. Cano is out .... how are the Mariners doing? Kershaw and Seager. Out.

You can't expect perfect health, and the Twins had NO ONE in AAA that was ready to help in any good way to start the year.

The, "in play, (runs)" button is probably getting a little rusty right now, hope it works if the twins actually do score this week

Just checked the score quick, couldn't help myself....wish I could have helped myself.

Rhett Bolinger tweets: #MNTwins signed former Angels catcher Juan Graterol to a Minor League deal. He's assigned to Triple-A Rochester.

To be fair, Adrianza is probably acceptable as the 2nd futility infielder (they went into April thinking Escobar was THE futility infielder.)

Motter is here because they didn't think past that, and had no real depth at Rochester. Wilson is here because they had absolutely zero depth for catcher past Castro/Garver, and have sat on their hands on that situation for weeks now.

Cave is here because despite an obvious need, an acceptable RH hitting 4th OFer wasn't added this winter.

I agree on Morrison.

But I don't think you can just say "well, they had injuries" as a complete excuse. Part of their job is to have a better bench going into the season, and to have better depth in case of injury/poor play.

that has to mean they are promoting someone, right?

HAHA...you nailed it.

I was going with "they're both punchless" but I like your line better.

The Mariners pythag record is 42-39--their success is being driven by a historic record in one run games, not Dee Gordon's .660 OPS.

The Dodgers are as big market as its gets, and have much more cash to replace injured players.

If the system has no one in AAA, isn't that more of an indictment against the previous regime, for not doing a better job of scouting/development in the previous 4/5 years, which is the amount of time you would expect solid but not great prospects to move through the levels?

I'm not saying injuries is the excuse for the performance.  I'm saying injuries are the excuse for the largely terrible 5-9 hitters in today's lineup.  Much of that would be irrelevant if Dozier, Mauer, Kepler, and Sano hadn't all taken steps/leaps backwards this year

yes and no. They could have had Wade and Gordon in AAA from the get go, we'd know a lot more about them right now, and their readiness. Gonsalves could have started there. RPs that are there could have been given a chance (and allowed the team to use AAA as extra roster space, instead their bullpen is largely guys w/o options). They could have signed better backups.

And, I don't care which regime it is anymore......

And, it is a game thread, so I think I'll bow out of this overly serious discussion.....but I think people aren't looking at the trades, FA, and other decisions of the FO and are instead blaming it all on the players and injuries.

Isn't Seattle's farm system pretty bare too?  At what point do we stop blaming the prior regime and start pointing our gaze at the regime that has assembled the current roster?  They can't be held blameless.  This FO has done a good job of filling the lower levels of the minors, but have been unable to find decent fill-ins at the AAA level.  That's a problem with the current FO, not the old one.

Assuming Mauer would be healthy seems like a really bad idea to me......and they signed Morrison to replace him, they made that decision.

Is Molitor thinking  - Time to bring in Pressly?

I don't think that he really thinks about it anymore.  It's purely reactionary at this point.

THIS is the free game of the day? THIS is how baseball markets itself?

Ha!  What attendance issues?!

"Well, I didn't use him last night..."

And the data indicates his spin rates and velocity are all holding up fine - let's bring him in.
