First off, I'd like to thank Vanimal for pointing me in this direction for this thread. (notice how I'm cleverly deflecting any blame if things go wrong while retaining full credit)

I look at baseball and was thinking of players and which player I might most closely identify with.

In my case, it has to be Bill "Spaceman" Lee. I remember reading in his book about how he handled contract negotiations without benefit of an agent. And, one time, his contract was up so, he decided to wait for the GM without any advance notice that he was going to be in the office. Mr. Lee was asked, upon the arrival of the GM "How did you get in here." To which Mr. Lee responded "Through the door."

Such a quick witted response that, I'm quite sure, set the tone for a quiet discussion of the future of Mr. Lee with the team.

Once I started pondering, it struck me the mods really can't be compared to players, probably closer to managers.

For instance, Chief. For some reason, when I think of Chief, I think of Jim Leyland, the ex-manager of the Tigers. Old school, kind of crusty, but knowing how to laugh at the vagaries of life. I'll never forget Leyland laughing his head off when he sent a runner so many times, the runner was getting gassed.

leyland

Then, there's Brian. I'm going with Joe Maddon here. Quirky, goofy, yet understands the game but isn't afraid to innovate. And who can forget, when Maddon was with the Rays, that he came up with a "clothing theme" during road trips. And we all know Brian is all about themes. Witness his Joe M. conversations.

Maddon

For TwinsNorth, well, that's a tough one. After all, North is Canadian, and, well, other than the show "Great White North" what do we really know about Canada? However, after much deliberation, I think the choice is pretty clear: Mike Scioscia. Pretty steady guy, a little enigmatic, gets the most from the limited talent he is given to work with and doesn't really fly off the handle.

Scioscia

And last, but not least, ChiTown. Now, I admit, this one is hard, because I'm trying to define someone who basically breaks every box someone tries to put her in. I thought about going with the late Billy Martin, just because Martin was such a character, but, that doesn't really fit. Martin was never as serene as ChiTown. So, since ChiTown is one of a kind, let's go with the first female manager of a pro baseball team: Jennie Finch.

JFinch

And now, for some random thoughts:

1. Why port and starboard? Why not left and right?
2. Knots? Why not MPH?
3. Nautical miles? Because an ordinary miles isn't good enough?
4. Fathoms? Have mariners not heard of feet and inches?
5. Sheets? Sheets are on a bed, not used to propel a ship.

Pitching:

Twins: Ervin Santana

White Sox: James Shields

Play Ball!

Don't forget Glunn.

Glunn is always positive and upbeat as he counsels his mod crew to make good decisions.

Also...Happy Birthday, Your Eminence.

Based on some lineups, that might be the proper description of the process too.

Ash: Wiley vet that doesn't like to stick around any one thread too long. VERY knowledgable about the game of baseball. NO ONE can beat his vision on the field.... And his posts*.

*Because he likes to type notes in really tiny font.

Finally, diehard. The true WILDCARD in the group of moderators. Comes off as real fiery at times, and other times downright insane.

I always figured 2 and 3 to be somehow connected...

As for 1, i think it is so turning around doesn't confuse someone.

"Veer left! Move the thing! No the other thing! Gah!"

As spot on were all the comparisons Blake made and made me laugh, this was also really funny, except he needs a long beard.

I don't think we have any mods that fit the mold, but I think we do have a few Ozzie Guillen's out there.  Many of us would like to let a profanity laced post fly now and then and we all know that Ozzie loved to do that.  I never thought Ozzie was particularly bright and I think many of us fit that mold as well.

Beat me to the punch...now, do we have any Gardy's out there?  I would say they state the obvious..."the ball is coming of his hand really well".

He must have been watching a sinker ball pitcher on the mound that day.

1.) Because right and left have different meanings depending on if you're facing the prow or stern of the vessel. Too confusing to have it be "the right side as you're facing the front". Thus starboard and port, which don't change based on which way you're facing. Port was originally larboard but that was too close to starboard so they switched it.

2 and 3.) Knots are tied up to Nautical Miles. Nautical miles are used because they're measuring distance on a globe, constantly using longitude and latitude. A nautical mile is 1/60th of one degree. It's useful to have the distance of a mile match up with lines on the map. Knots comes from that as you'd have to say "Nautical miles per hour" which is bulky. Knots is way better.

4.) Fathoms were originally the distance between a man's outstretched arms. This was a useful way to measure distance in the days before tape measures and what not. It also was easy when working with ropes and cables at sea. Over time, they realized that the six foot fathom divided nicely into a nautical mile so they kept it.

5) The term sheet came from the sail as the Old English word for the corner of the sail where the rope attached was sheet. This differentiates ropes attached to sails from ropes attached to other things on and off a ship.

So... It kinda boils down to clarity and ease of communicating.

Same reason catchers overuse brightly coloured nail polish?

Thanks, I actually figured out most of 1-4, but had no clue to #5.
