Twins Trade Garcia to Yankees

While the new front office has frustrated me in some ways, it is cool to see them pivot quickly like this. The old FO never seemed quite this nimble.

The previous front office wouldn't think of trading for a pitcher and then flipping him for a better prospect after just one start.

He's putting up good numbers in AA and he's only 21 but apparently his stats are ahead of his stuff. He's ranked #22 in the Yankees system in pipeline's recent update.

Wow, the Twins are paying Garcia's salary too (~$4 mil).

Quite the impressive pair of moves.

Enns looks like basically another Melotakis, maybe he gets a look in September. Must have been the 40 man roster guy the Yankees were going to cut.

Here's what Baseball America had to say about Littell before the 2017 season:

The Mariners drafted Littell as a 17-year old long-term project in 2013 and signed him for $100,000 to buy him out of an Appalachian State commitment. Seattle began to see the payoff three years after drafting him, but needing lefthander relief help traded him after the 2016 season to the Yankees for James Pazos. Littell's fastball sits 89-91, touching 93, and plays up because of high spin rate and advanced command. His main secondary offering is a true curveball that flashes plus, and he rounds out his three-pitch mix with an average to above-average changeup. Beyond his stuff Littell draws praise for his pre-start preparation, which includes advanced study of hitters' swings and tendencies. Littell often excelled most when pitching the final game of a series, when he had two or three days to watch an opposing team's hitters and figure out their weaknesses. His ERA has dropped every level he has climbed and his growing strength helped him hold up over 165.2 innings last season. He projects as a back-end starter and will begin 2017 in high Class A Tampa's rotation, with a strong chance to ascend to Double-A Trenton by summer.

Seems like a decent return for Garcia but at the same time, it's unlikely that either of these guys will ever help the big club. Maybe keeping Garcia around for rotation stability should have been considered? But I would guess that this means the Twins won't trade Santana.

I don't know anything about these guys but after looking at Enns stats

He looks like next man up for the Twins rotation.

I think Gonsalves should be up now. Realistically, I see no reason why we shouldn't see him next year. He will be over 500 minor league innings at the end of this season. I feel like that's plenty.

Looks good to me, every e loves a high spin rate these days and that's whee Enlow's hype sorang from during the draft so you know that's an interest to the new front office.

It would be easy to think Enns is a Slama-like all numbers, no stuff kind of guy, but if that was so, they probably wouldn't have traded for him.

So the Twins gave up a Ynoa who they paid 800K for, and now are paying 4 million for Littell (who only cost the Mariners 100K) and Enns, so basically after they the give up a Ynoa they pay 4.7 Mil for these two.... and that is a great deal? Time will tell. Can't say I'm impressed yet, and we need pitchers NOW.

It always seems that players that are traded for get more attention and favoritism than those that come through our system.

After Chattanooga's 21 inning game, acquiring a fresh arm is convenient...almost too convenient.

This seems solid enough. Probably more than I expected.

You'd rather have Ynoa, who's getting shelled in Rookie League and who's velocity never developed, to these two pitchers who are putting on a show in the upper minors?

Or you don't like to see Pohlad lose money on an investment that started to head south?

BA report:

An 11th-round pick in 2013 out of Mebane, N.C., Littell signed with the Mariners for $100,000 rather than attend Appalachian State. He was traded to the Yankees last December for lefthanded reliever James Pazos and had a standout season in his time in the Yankees organization. Littell is not overpowering, pitching mostly at 89-91 mph, but shows great feel to pitch. He throws a two-seam and four-seam fastball, which he spots well to both sides, and shows no fear of pitching inside, despite non-elite velocity. His curveball is his go-to pitch, with 11-to-5 shape and good depth beneath the zone, drawing swings and misses. His slider has some depth but can be inconsistent and the changeup has some fading action. Scouts are split on whether Littell is a starter in the long-term because of his velocity and that his fastball can get flat when it’s up in the zone. He profiles best as a long man.

#4 Starter? Which scout tell fans, please give me his name.

I say if we aren't spending the money on the ML club at this point, let's spend it on strengthening the rest of the system.

From Riveraveblues.com:

Enns, 26, has a 2.29 ERA (2.73 FIP) in 39.1 Triple-A innings this season. He missed more than two months with a shoulder strain. Enns has been unreal since coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2015, throwing 239 total innings with a 1.51 ERA (2.92 FIP). Enns is another command pitcher, though he’s several years older than Littell and has an injury history. Littell ranked 29th in my lasted prospect rankings. Enns was unranked.

Last week the Twins traded righty 19-year-old rookie ball right-hander Huascar Ynoa to get Garcia from the Braves. He’s having a poor year statistically (5.26 ERA and 4.40 FIP in 25.2 innings) though he offers power stuff and is a similarly ranked prospect as Littell. A back-end of a team’s top 30 list prospect. Ynoa offers more ceiling and Littell more probability. That’s a very Twins thing to do. Trade ceiling for probability. Enns is pretty much a throw in.

It’s also worth nothing there are 40-man roster considerations here. Littell will be Rule 5 Draft eligible this coming offseason and he would have been very much on the 40-man roster bubble for the Yankees. I think they would have found a way to squeeze him onto the roster, though it wasn’t a lock. Also, the Yankees were going to have to clear a 40-man spot for Garcia, and Enns figured to be near the front of the DFA line.

I've often wondered the dollar value of a prospect.

These trades involving Garcia have gotten me closer to that difficult answer.
