The 40 man roster moves must be done by Friday, Nov 18 to protect players eligible for the Rule 5 draft

Lots of important decisions to be made this week

Posted

Jose Berrios

Byungho Park

Miguel Sano

Byron Buxton

Robbie Grossman

Max Kepler

Eddie Rosario

Danny Santana - released

Adam Walker

Brian Dozier

Eduardo Escobar

Joe Mauer

Trevor Plouffe - released

Jorge Polanco

Kennys Vargas

Juan Centeno - released

John Ryan Murphy

Buddy Boshers

J.T. Chargois

Tyler Duffey

Kyle Gibson

Phil Hughes

Brandon Kintzler

Yorman Landa - rule 5 eligible

Pat Light

Trevor May

Adalberto Mejia

Mason Melotakis

Ryan O'Rourke - rule 5 eligible

Glen Perkins

Ryan Pressly

Taylor Rogers

Randy Rosario

Ervin Santana

Hector Santiago

Michael Tonkin

36 current players listed on 40 man roster.  I would take off the following (bold) players (above) to get my list down to 31.

I would add the following 9 names to move to that 40 player max number:

Mitch Garver ©
Zack Granite (OF)
Daniel Palka (OF)
Engelb Vielma (SS)

Fernando Romero (P)

Felix Jorge (P)
DJ Baxendale (P)
Jason Wheeler (P)
Zack Jones (P)

This would take my list to 40 with the understanding that somebody will be released or traded to open up space for a needed trade target.   My bubble guy was Stuart Turner - I would be nervous all the way through the rule 5 draft.

My guess is from the front office's perspective, Turner is less of a bubble guy (more likely to be added) than Baxendale, Wheeler and Jones).

I'm not sure the decisions are all that important. Most of the guys 35-40 are fairly fungible. Yes, they matter, but if we polled 1000 people, they'd probably agree on 38 of the names.

I agree with the bold players you want to release. Out of the 9 you want to protect, I don't think Wheeler, Baxendale, Jones, or Vielma needs to be protected. All of those guys are the fringiest (is that a word) of fringe players to make a 40 man roster. If some other team wants to draft them and store them on a 25 man roster, they can go right ahead.

Out of the bullpen, Baxendale's numbers were almost exactly the same as Chargois

35 IP

1.29 era

40 K's (Chag = 41)

28 hits (Chag = 27)

8 bb's (Chag = 12)

1 HR allowed

With a front office that values numbers, expect a guy like Baxendale to be more valued by Falvey/Levine

Could easily be a Rule 5 pick and stashed in someone's bullpen as a long reliever

Bax's relief numbers at Rochester were after pitching 81 innings as a starter at Chattanooga

Wonder what he would be like as a fresh

year- long reliever

Seth

I agree with Gagne that Baxendale will be gone if left off the Roster.  I also agree with Seth (on 2nd thought) - Turner is probably a keeper as well.  I also think that if Jones was a selection last year, he will be so again this year.  Especially since he is healthy this off season and performed well in his healthy return to Chattanooga.  2.53 ERA in 21 games in Chattanooga with 46 strikeouts in 32 innings.  Plus he throws - 95+ on most nights out the pen.  Somebody will take a chance on him again.

Which front office?  ;)

My take on who should be protected for Rule 5, along with the eligible players is here.

Bottom line:  They should be aggressively trading people this week to open some spots.

Boshers, Duffey, Tonkin, Santiago, even Grossman and Park could be expendable. Hey, if Park is grabbed, another team pays. Otherwise, he's in the minors! You could also let go of Escobar. Remember, though, anyone added to the 40-man needs to stay (unless traded) into spring training. You need a body or two for your own Rule 5 pick, or a free agent.

Is this actually the case?  Yes, he still has options so the Twins could send him to the minors.  But he has a contract and if the Twins release him, the Twins owe him the remainder of the contract and Park is free to sign with any other team for the major league minimum (assuming he baseball in the U.S.)

The only guys they should add are:

Mitch Garver

Fernando Romero
Felix Jorge

Bubble guys:

Zack Granite
Engelb Vielma

Here is the thing:  I have no problem if they add Granite, after they cut/trade Grossman.   Granite will be more valuable on the bench than Grossman.

I would also add Palka who should be competing for a starting job this ST.

Why would you have a developing player like Granite sit on the bench? He should be playing every day in AAA.

Granite is 24 years old and his future in baseball is as a bench player.

I'd be OK letting him play in AAA until July, but I don't think he's a guy you worry about stunting by being a bench player at this point.
