Twins Option Berrios, Recall Taylor Rogers

The Minnesota Twins just announced that Jose Berrios had been optioned to Rochester. Taylor Rogers will take his spot.

I would speculate that Pat Dean will take Berrios's spot in the rotation.

Ugh... I don't know how this inspires confidence in any of the young players if they are immediately shipped back to AAA after a rough game.

Dumb, just dumb. He had two solid starts prior to this one, typical Twins though, anytime a youngster shows a little trouble they send them back down to AAA then let them work it out in the majors, can someone please tell me exactly what would be the issue letting Berrios stay in the majors for another couple starts?

Instead we get Pat Dean in the rotation, a guy who will never be in the rotation for a "contending team" and more chances for Phil Hughes to get his ERA below 6.00

Unreal.

Well, I guess Dean better get his bags packed, because he's one bad start away from Rochester now.

I'm sorry everyone, I feel like I've been a bummer on here this morning, but I'm having a hard time with this. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Bummer

But I'm not sure it was necessary

How was it not necessary?

Something is clearly not clicking. His ERA is sky-high - it was well over 6 with an unusual 5 BB/9 before he started, and then he gave up eight runs in the first inning.

Get him down, rebuild his confidence, and have someone else start.

bummer, going to the game on the 21st and he was in line to pitch. Was excited to see him, now guess i'll find silver linings elsewhere.

Bummer. Still waiting for this awesome farm system built in the last 4 years to help this team.

As the saying goes, you don't win the WS having the best farm system. This could be proof of that. :(

Have to remember that he's only 21, I think it's good that he got a taste of the majors so he knows what to expect the next time around.  A little more seasoning at AAA and I think he'll be ready....Just like Buxton.

The head scratcher to me would be putting Dean in the rotation.  I think he may have found a niche as the long man.  Granted, Taylor Rogers is probably suited for the same role.  Basically, we're talking Scott Diamond 2.0 and 2.1....

I would've given him one more start. Giving Dean a start is not a necessity. Although he seemed to pitch the longest game of any relief guy on the staff. A future roster spot (2017 and beyond) is now between him and Rogers. And when Gibson returns, we know Gibson will go in the rotation and everyone else will also stay for now. It is time to shine if people want to stay in Twins plans! But, yes, I would've given Berrios one more start at the majors, see how he absorbs advice given to him by MAJOR LEAGUE coaches and applies to a major league game, then make the decision if he needs to go down to AAA (yes, he does at some point).

IMO this team has had an issue all season long with young players pressing to do well, and end up struggling. I think this merry-go-round of shipping down players has something to do with it. They're setting up an expectation this year that if you can't contribute right away, pack your bags.

Out of 280 pitchers with more than 15 innings, Berrios ranks 265th in % of pitches in the strike zone. Of his four starts, he's had one with a positive WPA (and that just barely).

This isn't about "one bad start". This is about The Machine needing retooling.

He pitched pretty decently his two starts prior to yesterdays! Good lord, it's not like he was over-matched or something every time out, yeah, the walks need to come down, but why not have him work on that against MAJOR LEAGUE HITTERS instead of a bunch of bums in AAA?

Typical Terry Ryan move to be honest, no patience with the youngsters, anytime something goes wrong its time to hit the panic button, now instead of a young stud pitcher in the rotation we get Terry Ryan's safety blanket of the year (soft throwing pitch to contact type)

Dean?! Pat Freaking Dean?! He's a left handed Nick Blackburn. He throws softer than Milone. At least Milone has track record of being a major league pitcher. I seriously cannot believe Dean is still on the 40-man, let alone on the active roster AND starting.

This is a total knee-jerk, reactionary move from a desperate front office. Why not stretch out May and put him in the rotation?

Because he has hung Zero's in 6 out of his 11 Innings pitched and he's done that with Control and Walks hanging around his neck.

There was really no evidence of control problems in 2015 so... it's possible (I have no way of knowing) that he's pressing to impress in the big leagues and if that's the case... let him work through it.

In my opinion... It's time for a new attitude when considering the youngsters.

Well the good news is you can always sell your tickets and get your full value back....

If only! i bought them around the first week of the season, and hotel is booked. So, guess i'll just have a fun weekend in the cities watch 2 mediocre twins games and head back home. Bars will be frequented. (not sure if you were being facetious) I'm leaning towards yes. :)

I would think it'd be more important to see how Berrios bounces back at the MLB level after getting rocked instead of seeing him dominate in AAA....

The only way this move would make even a little bit of sense is if the Twins were "in contention" and were bursting at the seams with quality starting pitchers.

Of course that isn't even close to the case, the Twins are the worst team in baseball and currently have guys like Dean, Nolasco and Hughes in the rotation. There literally is no good reason and no real defense for this move. It's dumb, it's terrible, it's something that 28-29 other GM's in the game would never do. The Twins are literally the anti moneyball at this point, I would say it's comical, but honestly it's more depressing than anything. At least in this dumpster fire of a lost season the Twins were worth watching 2 out of 5 days with Duffey and Berrios on the mound. Now we are down to one pitcher who is worth watching.

It won't happen, but the fans should boycott the May 21st game.

The good news is that if you are sitting in the OF your chances of catching a home run ball served up by Dean will be good. (Ditto if you are at the Hughes game as well)

But if Berrios did bounce back, it would create a dilemma when Gibby returned.  This season belongs to Gibby and Hughesie, anything we see out of Berrios or Meyer is apparently a bonus. :(

I mean, are we afraid of losing games or something?

"There is a right way and a wrong way to lose games, we prefer the right way aka the Twins way"- Terry Ryan, probably.

Berrios only had 3 starts in AAA this year.  He only demonstrated good control in 1.  Let him hone his control in AAA.

yup will be there Sunday as well, So here's to hoping for a HR ball. Though it will be from a season i'd rather not remember.  I'm from SIoux Falls, and the canaries open on Friday night so going to that as well. Who knew, that may be the better quality product this upcoming weekend.
