Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Well, we are moving out of state. Been here my whole life other than college......but I wanted a new place, and we are off to Oregon. Those of you in MN are lucky. It is an amazing state, with a great education system. So much to do. We truly have loved it here, hope you all are enjoying it also. For good or ill, I'll stay active here, it's one of the communities I enjoy. Don't muck up MN, we'll be back to visit!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Enjoy your new adventure in life, Mike! It was hard for me to move out of state after spending the first 23 years of my life there too. The good thing is you have your partner in crime to lean on, and help make new friends. I have no doubts that you'll do well and enjoy all of the new things to do on the west coast.

Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I have not been to Oregon. Find all the good places and give me an excuse, please. Perhaps on the way to Vancouver following the election.

It is a beautiful state, if you like Mountains, rocky coastlines, wineries, breweries, great food, lots of biking and hiking.......
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Better make sure your knee's healed up for all of your hiking/biking and mountain climbing! My mom's currently dealing with a torn meniscus from playing tennis.. She's pretty disappointed to miss the first month or so of the golf season.
USMCTwin Verified Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Part of me was hoping you were having to relocate to some place in the deep south. Oregon does sound like a more natural fit I must say. I hope your move goes well and you all transition as smooth as possible. I wonder if you will get any pressure to switch allegiances for college/pro teams. We moved to the KC area 4 years ago and there is a lot of Royals pressure, mostly because of their recent success I'm sure. Stay strong and Go Twins!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 If I were Mike, I'd ditch any allegiance to the University of Minnesota sports, and become an Oregon Ducks fan in a heart beat. They actually have good teams!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Author Posted May 12, 2016 I have already received Seahawks pressure from my sister in Seattle, and my cousins up there..... Ya, the deep South was not a realistic option. It would have been uncomfortable for sure. But, good humor .....

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Author Posted May 12, 2016 No, she's been a Vikings fan forever, then a Seahawks fan second for a couple decades now.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I can totally relate Mike, my wife and I are embarking on our next adventure as soon as my school year wraps up next week. We're off to AZ where my wife will make enough to call me a trophy husband and I can just teach for the fun of it. Best of luck to you on that long move, I can definitely relate to all the challenges and emotions with it.

Or ... who else lives in AZ?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 When I left Minnesota for a job in Canada, I cried the whole way out of town and across WI. I still consider MN home and may live there again once I retire ... but not in winter. I think we should plan a trip out there ... we can all take the Empire Builder out to visit you!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Oregon is a place I'd love to visit. It's on the bucket list of places to see before future kids come into play.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Safe travels Mike. I spent a week in that area back in 2008, it seems like a great place... my kind of people. I am sure you will get to enjoy all the perks that come with living there - The Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, and you are 1.5-2 hour drive from the Pacific, plus, if you are a Goonies fan you can drive that same amount of time to Astoria and revel in the glory that is the Goonies. There is a beer that is brewed in Redmond, WA. The name of the brewer is Mac and Jack's and the beer is African Amber... one of the best beers I have ever had. Mac and Jack's only distributes to WA, OR, and ID. Check it out.
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Ah, I envy you. I've made that trip many times myself. Always a blast. Here are some tips to help ensure things go smoothly: 1. Be Frugal: If some wise ass general store clerk tries to get into your head with some enigmatic ox to yoke conversion rate, just tell him to go fly a kite. 2. Family Planning: Do you have kids? Not anymore. Now, you have Dysentery. Start saying your goodbyes. 3. Hazards: As I'm sure you know, you're going to cross a river or two (or six LOL). Don't bother packing a raft. There's always going to be one lying around when you need it. 4. Hygiene: I recommend ~15 pounds of soap for the trip. If you're going by the book, it's advised that you bring 25 lbs, but if it's just you and your wife...don't sweat it. Anyway, you won't need that much because you'll more than likely die of exhaustion anyway...and cholera. 5. Recreation: You're going to want to do some hunting on your way out there. DO NOT kill more than you can fit on your wagon. Or do. Whatever, I guess. It'll be the highlight of your trip. Happy trails!
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Ooou ... gonna set up a tent in Chief's backyard? Wait ... or maybe Pseudo's backyard? Or ... who else lives in AZ? I'm already planning to invest in nice speakers so I can crank up the loud music around Chief's nap time.

Hahaha ... take pictures to share with the rest of us. And congrats on the move ... it's a long, long way from home ... but it sounds like a good deal for you and your family.

I came back after my stint in Chicago too so I'll miss it dearly, but on to the next adventure. But not trying to steal Mike's thunder at all. I'd much prefer Oregon.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2016 Author Posted May 12, 2016 Where in Oregon and what job?For a year, we are renting about twenty miles from downtown Portland. I am keeping my job. My wife has purchased a window treatment franchise. We will see how walkable this area is. Then assess the next place.
ashbury Verified Member Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Hope you like 55 MPH speed limits on wide open state and federal highways. Because, they have 55 MPH speed limits on wide open state and federal highways there. Also, hope you don't like pumping your own gas. Because, they don't let you pump your own gas there. Other than getting from point A to point B, it's a fun state. The area around Bend is cool. While painstakingly fact checking this post, I discovered that they raised the Interstate highway speed limit to 70 just this year. And a few of the two laners get bumped up to 65. Pretty forward thinking!
stringer bell Verified Member Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Congratulations to both Mike and Levi. I don't know what my future holds after I am done working, but moving to another state at that time has some appeal. I've never been in either state, but would like to visit both some time. There are good things to be found anywhere, even the Deep South, or so I'm told. BTW, isn't Oregon's governor a native Minnesotan? Maybe that's why they got forward thinking all of a sudden.
