David Murphy leaves Rochester

They need a bench........

Outside of Buxton and Kepler, the only position players on the 40 man roster available are Polanco, ABW and Vargas.  Vargas is off to a slow start and not really an ideal fit to the current 25 man roster.  Maybe they'll sign a FA or just wait for Plouffe to come back in a week.

My head is going to start bleeding soon from the head scratching I'm doing.

I hope he has a wonderful retirement. I know the Rangers Fans liked him.

However... I'm happy... He didn't make sense in our context.

five position players in the minors on the 40 man, and now three have been sent down "recently"........so only ABW and Vargas can come up, unless there is a DL situation, is that correct?

Yep.  So they can either

1) Hold steady until Plouffe comes back and go with a deeper bullpen or

2) Add another bat somehow to the 40 man roster.

Since Plouffe should be back in less than a week, I think they just do that.

I agree, and that seems a bit risky.......but I agree.

Ecstatic to hear Murphy isn't in their plans! If they are going to lose, let's lose with our young guys and let them get some experience!

Also glad to see Buxton and Kepler getting everyday AB's!

Dang. David Murphy didn't want to play for the Twins.

That's what kills me about this.  Not that I want David Murphy on the Twins, but here's a team that's desperately grabbing at straws at 5-14, has an open 40  man spot, has only two other minor league position players available that weren't recently demoted, he's clinging to some pretty thin hopes of an MLB career while not earning a MLB check,  and

he says "let me out of here."

Yeah. I know it, but I mostly meant that in jest. I prefer to live on the sunny side of the street where Murphy found out he was just a knee jerk threat. Maybe they wouldn't just throw him on the mix.

According to Murphy, he said that he wants to spend more time with his family and that his heart was not in baseball right now

I think, like Quentin, the Twins told Murphy he wasn't getting the call, and then Murphy quit. I doubt he was walking away from a likely promotion this week.

Yep... Not only told him he wasn't getting the call but they were sending down Buxton and Kepler and they would be playing instead.

That would be my guess

I like how you're putting the pieces of this puzzle together RB. That makes a lot of sense to me...

Worse benefits, making a fraction of what you're used to making, and struggling in a new organization would make almost everyone reconsider what they're doing. No matter if you're a professional baseball player, or a janitor cleaning up beer leftover from a skeleton..

I hope they are not waiting on Plouffe. His type of injury is notorious for taking raf longer to heal than originally thought.

Unfortunately you gave Terry Ryan far to much credit with this guess.

He told reporters today that Hicks was out righted off the 40 man to clear a spot for Murphy

I've been critical of several of the recent moves and non-moves, but Murphy not getting added to the 25-man might mean they get it.

One thing to consider, completely hypothetical of course, Ryan may have liked Murphy as a bench player but once promoted he would have little control of Murphy would actually ride pine or if Molitor would favor the vet and play him every day. Not calling him up could be a sign that Ryan understands he and Molitor are pretty much forced to view success differently; short term vs long term.

Do you have a link to that quote?

If true that's a fireable offense.

Murphy played in 10 games and received 36 at-bats for Rochester, playing mostly corner outfield. Ryan was on hand to watch Murphy play a handful of games last week. In fact, the GM was so encouraged he tried to outright Triple-A catcher John Hicks off the 40-man roster in advance of a Murphy promotion

It might be a fire able offense for some organizations, but the Twins GM has no accountability. Hopefully more crowds like tonight will start hitting the Pohlads in the pocket book and they might consider alternatives

Well...

That still isn't the smoking gun I'd want to see him holding.

That paragraph sounds like it could be Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc.

Not sure I follow, Hicks was out righted to clear a spot for Murphy, Murphy decided to go home instead, that's straight from the horses mouth

David Murphy knew he had nothing left. Professional scout Terry Ryan didn't

It could be... and i'm not trying to be argumentative but it doesn't say directly in the paragraph that it came from the horses mouth.

I'm gonna need the quote of Terry Ryan saying that. Otherwise... it could be the reporters own math of 2 plus 2... therefore.

This one is kind of important to me and I don't want to be any more half cocked then I already am...

Because if Terry Ryan made room on the roster for a 34 year old player whose heart isn't in it because he's in a panic over decisions he made in the off season when he had the time to make better ones.

Well... This is a big issue to me. I'd like to have the quotes.

If they really tried to clear a spot for Murphy by trying to sneak a decent, still young 3rd catcher...then...then...I'm not even sure what to say to that.

Further, in addition to the well discussed bullpen non-moves, it just seemed SO OBVIOUS to me that the two moves the Twins absolutely should have made last off season was a 4th OF/CF option to protect/buffer Buxton AND a veteran RH OF to play with Arcia and Rosario. (Of course, this was before we got Park and Sano got placed in RF) I see Byrd off to a solid start in Cleveland and it kills me because that's one of the veteran, inexpensive but decent options I saw as a perfect fit for this team.

No offense to Park, who may turn out to be terriffic, but doesn't a solid veteran RH OF like that with Sano-Mauer-Plouffe sharing 1B-3B-DH as they did late last season just make more sense?

It's not a quote. But this is the original tweet from Mike Berardino:

"Losing John Hicks on waivers was done in anticipation of calling up David Murphy, Terry Ryan said. That was the plan until convo w/Murphy."

So yeah, we may be missing the exact quote, but this isn't hearsay, this was reported by a reporter directly after his conversation with Ryan

Yeah... I'm reading the Twitter Feed

I'm hoping Nick or Seth or John can dig some more on this.

It may not be important to some... But this is reputation rocking to me.

I truly believe TRyan is making it up as he goes, so I can't say I'm all that surprised. Equally horrified in the process and decision making from the man in charge, yet just not that surprised
