Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Working on mine will get it going after the Rule 5 draft. Here is my 2015 top 40 list. More than 10 players from that list either graduated, retired, released or traded, so 2016 will be interesting
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I like this thread. We need to keep moving it up from time to time to encourage people to post theirs.

Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We could pin it if you want? No... I just mean it needs to show up on the front page from time to time to encourage people to write prospect rankings.
TRex Provisional Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I don't think the top 10 is going to vary much this year (except order). There seems to be two groups, with (all alphabetically to minimize distractions): Berrios, Buxton and Kepler followed by:Gordon, Gonsalves, Jay, Meyer, Polanco, Stewart, and Walker The only ones I can think of with a chance to sneak in are Vielma (personal favorite) and Thorpe. What are some other personal sleepers for #10?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 They are relievers, but I'd guess some folks may give Burdi, Chargois and Peterson higher ratings than the love 'em or hate 'em prospects Stewart and Walker.

What are some other personal sleepers for #10?Thorpe very underrated.. the kid was 18 in A ball throwing 90's and had like a 10/9 K rate.. i believe he's a top 5 prospect at the end of the year, maybe top 3. Vielma is good but not top 10 until the bat comes a little bit more to me anyways
jsteve96 Provisional Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 1) Byron Buxton AAA2) Jose Berrios AAA3) Max Kepler AAA4) Tyler Jay A+5) Nick Gordon A+6)Jorge Polanco AAA7) Stephen Gonsalves A+8)Adam Walker AAA9) Lewis Thorpe A+(after maybe a little rehab start in A)10)Kohl Stewart AA11)Alex Meyer AAA12) Nick Burdi AA13) Chargois AA14)Felix Jorge A+15)Taylor Rogers AAA16) Travis Blankehorn A17) Jermaine Palacios A18) Mitch Garver AA19)LaMonte Wade A20)Wander Javier DSL21) Fernando Romero A22) Stuart Turner AAA23)Travis Harrison AA24)Engelb Vielma AA25) Amaurys Minier A26)Aaron Sledgers AA27) Levi Michael AAA28)Tanner English A+29) Mason Melotakis A+30) Jake Reed AA31) Sam Gibbons A+32) Ryan Eades AA33)Zack Jones AA34) Brandon Peterson AAA35) Lachlan Wells E-Town36) Jean Carlos Arias GCL37) Lewin Diaz E-Town38) Navarreto A39) Niko Goodrum AA40) Randy Rosario A

If you think she would be upset over your lack of knowledge regarding alphabetical order, that would pale in comparison to the venom she would spew over your posting on TD!
roger Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Thanks, for what had to be a lot of work with a reasonable view of these players. It was a great read.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I like these lists but it doesn't feel right to have a guy lead a prospect list for three years running. I'd bump anyone below AA out of the top 6-8 just out of principle, unless they are a Buxton/Sano type.

Every list is constructed differently, but if in the back of an analyst's mind is hypothetical trade value, that value (for a very young and raw prospect) may remain top-10 for years, without necessarily ever being top-1 or top-2.

I'd also add that aside from the top three, the other top guys at AA or higher are looking pretty questionable at this point.

Really good point. However, as an typical anonymous poster on the Internet, and because of the valid point you made, I have chosen to dig into my original position even deeper. only to say that I am more turned on by the guys who "don't have time for no lists," like Correa, Bryant, Syndergaard, even Alex Gordon back in the day. I love the work people put into covering the Twins and honestly I fawn over them as much as anyone, I just wish our lists turned over more often, whether promotions or trades (however not injuries, as set back the Twins slightly).

Having a hard time seeing anything here I don't agree with. At most I might have very slight variations (maybe Palacios ahead of Blankenhorn). Might have Cabbage near the end. Overall amazingly good list.
glunn Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 These are some excellent lists. Nice work and a good discussion. Kudos to Diehard for starting this thread. I hope to see more lists.

Gordon and Jay do have a lot of hype, both top 10 picks within last 2 years and Gordon is 19 years young can't drop him because an average offensive year according to wRC+

HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I really enjoy reading all the prospect lists, especially the reasons why players are selected where they're at. However, I have a small beef... Many of these lists will [ do ] have Buxton #1. Why? Are you going strictly by potential? I ask, because his at bat performance with the Twins was pretty horrible. Just like Hicks' was when called up. Are you taking into consideration that the performance at the next level counts less towards a players potential? Just curious.....

Buxton was the easy choice for #1... Yes, I saw the struggles, but it was his first big league time. He wasn't ready (Mientkiewicz said as much when he was called up, and Ryan acknowledged that he was called up out of need rather than readiness). Buxton's all about the tools. His speed, defense and arm strength are all elite. He could hit .250 for his career and be a solid major leaguer. But what's exciting is that he can be much more than that. He can be a good leadoff type of hitter. He'll hit a lot of singles and we saw his ability to turn singles into doubles and doubles into triples... At the end, we saw that he has the ability to hit for a little power too. His first homer went to left, but his second homer went just to the right of centerfield. The guy is an elite talent... What she showed in 129 at bats means pretty much nothing.

Some value results more than others (not that Buxton was bad in AA, but he was clearly not ML ready). I put him at 2 on mine this year. He was 1 last year. Main reason for that (for me at least) was that he plays CF, which is a bit harder commodity to find impact talent than 3B. This year, Sano flat out out-performed him at the same levels.

But the coaches and manager got a lot of work to do on his pitch recognition and his mechanics. This next year at AAA, people need blinders when it comes to BA and watch the BB's and the OBP. Just like Sano, that will be the sign he's ready.
mlhouse Verified Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Nice list. IT is fun to see the ranking discussion. Just for fun, here is my list and their "rating". The rating is my own qualitative measure but anyone over 85 is a legitimate MLB prospect, below that number they are still prospects with certain issues that need to be resolved with time/experience. It is used just to show the drop in the prospect rankings that a "1-50" list doesn't show. And I do not consider Byron Buxton a prospect anymore. 1. JO Berrios 972. Max Kepler 953. Jorge Polanco 914. Kohl Stewart 905. Nick Gordon 896. Stephen Gonslaves 897. Tyler Jay 878. Nick Burdi 849. Louis Thorpe 8310. JT Chargois 8111. Adam Walker 8012. Alex Meyer 8013. Jake Reed 7814. Stuart Turner 7615.
