Glad the Winfield JR declared. He had nothing to gain by coming back and his friends and roomates on the team are all graduating this spring anyway.

I would think Tyler Johnson will be the first Gopher drafted (round 2 maybe), followed by Winfield, then Coughlin and Martin.

I could see Johnson falling a bit, it's an incredibly stacked WR class this year, both in quality and depth. A bit of unlucky timing for him.

Best season for the Gophers since at least the early 60s. This team was better than Mason's or Kill's best. Winning 11 college football games plus winning a New Year's Day bowl game is terrific. Now, let's see some more trophies in Minneapolis (Floyd, the Axe and the Jug).

 

Regarding Johnson, there are a lot of good receivers in the current draft. He could be a real value pick for the purple and gold, who really don't have a good option for their third wide receiver.

I'm not sure about that. Once you fall into the mid rounds, you could pretty much go anywhere, good or bad.

After Diggs and Thielen, I'd take TJ over anyone on the WR corps. Would be great to have a big, physical, fast WR like DK Metcalf. TJ shredded the vaulted Auburn D, no reason he can't succeed in Sunday.

Me too, but that's an incredibly low bar, IMO.

It is a bar set by a playoff team, that won a playoff game on the road. Low? Yes. Absolutely. Still a realistic picture of the talent at WR in the NFL. Shoot, Treadwell was cut twice and had a significant role in the Vikes this year.

The Vikings brought Treadwell back because they had to pay him either way, and were up against the cap.

 

Treadwell will be out of the league once the Vikings move on from him, IMO.

Yeah they wasted 4 years on Treadwell and haven’t made the right late round picks in recent years. Bisi Johnson looks like he could be a good WR 4, spot starter in a pinch. Pretty good for a 7th rounder. If the draft class is deep at WR I hope Rick picks the right sleeper this time.

 

Back to the Gophers, I think Tyler Johnson has a sneaky good NFL career with good health. If he slips in the 4/5th round I’ll be rooting for the Vikes to take him.

The 11-2 record was nice and it is really nice to finish in the Top Ten. I'd certainly like to see Floyd, the Axe and the Jug in the university's trophy case. If they finish 8-4 next year, but have two or all three of the trophies, I'll be satisfied.

Last year was the most fun I've had as a Gophers football fan in ... years.  Right now, I'm hoping the Gophs can wash the bad taste of the baseball playoffs out of my mouth. Be sweet to start off the weird season by bringing the Little Brown Jug home.

 

Did anyone notice how the national telecasters last year kept referring to the 2019 Gophers as the winningest Minnesota team since 1904?

 

Mildly annoying. How about the Gophers' teams that won three national championships in the mid 1930s, and from 1933 through the first four games of 1936 they went 24-0-4? That's right, 28 games without a defeat. How does that stretch stack up against the 1904 squad, which played high school teams in compiling those 13 wins?

 

I get that they were going for the prior team with the most wins in a single season. But as often as the national sportscasters spoke of 1904, you'd think one of them might have done the research and noticed the last team to win three consecutive national titles.

The first half was closer than the score indicated, the second half wasn't. The defense looked pretty bad all game but the offense, even with a mixed up line, had some promise but they left some points on the field. Special teams - fake punt fiasco, long return on a squib kick - were pretty bad.

I'm astounded Bateman returned to the team after initially opting out. After talking to multiple potential major leaguers who are still not allowed to work out at full strength and may never realize a major league dream due to catching COVID while an underpaid minor league player, risking the health of unpaid collegiate players for entertainment and potentially risking a future professional career for some of them is beyond absurdity to me.

I'm astounded Bateman returned to the team after initially opting out. After talking to multiple potential major leaguers who are still not allowed to work out at full strength and may never realize a major league dream due to catching COVID while an underpaid minor league player, risking the health of unpaid collegiate players for entertainment and potentially risking a future professional career for some of them is beyond absurdity to me.

 

For that reason, I'm not watching college sports this year.

I understand that B1G teams started out in a lose-lose situation. Getting the season canceled, then back pedaled to start over the course of a couple months. Like most every sport that has returned, I don't think it's smart to do during a pandemic. The higher ups decided money was more important, and here we are. 

I'm shocked, quite honestly, that the NFL has made it 7 weeks without a catastrophic outbreak. If they can pull it off, I don't see why college football can't. So now that the season is underway, yes, Fleck needs to make sure the team follows the protocols and protects them.

I can't recall ever seeing a worse kicking game by a pro or college football team. I get that it was covid-caused, but still. I suppose I should be grateful they made the extra points and a 29 yard field goal.  They had kickoffs and punts that didn't go that far. 

 

Michigan played a good game. we'll see if they don't rise in the rankings over the course of the season--at least until they get to Ohio State. 

 

If we get our players back, the Gophs may do better in their next couple of games, and maybe they'll be ready for Iowa.

I would say the NFL has struggled worse than MLB did, but that's immaterial to this discussion.
