Berrios is the X-Factor

In the midst of a playoff run, the Twins need that extra something to push them off the fence into contention. Right now, they could just as easily make the playoffs as they could miss them. The extra something we need is Jose Berrios. He has been flat out dominant in every level of the minors. He set a new career high in strikeouts his last start. With the roster expansion approaching, the first player we promote should be Berrios and place him right into the rotation. I was thinking ahead to if we make the WC game and I realized that I would not trust to put any of our current starters on the mound. So my plan is to give Berrios some starts in the majors so that he can become more comfortable and experienced so that he could possibly start the WC game (if we make it). The hitters would never have seen his stuff before and that would give him an advantage. If Terry Ryan is serious about making the playoffs, he will promote Berrios in a heartbeat.

"X-Factor" might be a good nickname for Berrios. Certainly better than Barry.

Jo-Jo might be okay...

Jo-Jo Berries, no...

J-Ber, no...

This is tough. Might have to call him Jose for a while.

Exactly. He already has a nickname. La Maquina or the Machine.

Best not to be promoting any nickname for the guy right now

I am still scared by the "Real Deal" Durbin

I never heard of " Real Deal" or " Vanimal" or even " Little Papi" Coke bottles...

Personally, I think the Twins have to make this move if they think they have a shot this year. I think they're concerned about adding him to the 40-man roster early, but I their bigger concern is how many innings he would end up pitching if they made a deep playoff run.

His career high is 140 and he's at 155 right now so if he gets 4 more starts at 6 innings each for the regular season, then 5 more at 6 innings between ALDS, ALCS, and WS, that's 69 more innings over his previous career high and a 49% increase over last years innings. I've never been one to doubt his abilities, but that's a huge increase.

I still say the Twins have to call him up if they want to compete in the postseason.

The problem i foresee is if this team does make the playoffs, what kind of rotation do you go with? Hughes might still be out, Santana won't be pitching due to the suspension, Gibson and Milone have been so-so and May is still in the pen.  So who do you start in the one game WC elimination?  Gibson? Gibson, Pelfrey & Milone have all been shaky the past few weeks.   Duffey has too little experience to factor in yet.

What happens if we win the single elimination game and move on the divisional series?  Do go with Hughes (assuming he's healthy), Gibson, Pelfrey and Milone?

I kind of have the feeling the Twins are not going to call up Berrios this season to save on service time.  But Duffey might be a possible option depending on how his his next couple of starts go.

We are in no position to consider "what will we do if we make the postseason"

You try your best to get there and figure it out if it happens.

If that means calling up Berrios to start in Milone's spot knowing that if you get there you probably need to move Berrios to the pen.... So be it.

Pitching can be a funny thing. A lot can change in 6 weeks. Pitchers who stink now, might "find it" in October. Not long ago Pelfrey was lights out.

Guess who has just been pulled from the Red Wings rotation.

JO La Maquina to the rescue for the season!

What's your source? I can't find anything about this.

Berrios is still listed as the Red Wings starter for tomorrow (Monday Aug. 31) which is a shame, because if he is on any kind of innings limit, it's a waste to use them at AAA that close to roster expansion.

I think that Hicks will be the X Factor.  Buxton contributes little to the offense.  Someone who hits enough to add a run per game will be huge--IF Hicks is that guy.
