I havnt looked at Hrbowski mock yet, but the pros, and Hrbowski may be a pro too, are saying Tyler Jay to the Twins. I would be ok with that, but I still prefer Tucker now that Bregman has been chosen.

I'm not a pro, I'm just a sophomore in high school who loves scouting. :)

Throws hard, maybe becomes a starter, could help us this year in the pen?

Could be worse! Kind of a weak class overall so I don't mind the pick

I like the pick. Probably the best lefty they could take. They converted Duffy they can convert Jay. He has two plus pitches and two more on there way to plus. Most scouts felt he had the stuff to start. It is a typical twins safe pick with some upside. If he becomes Glenn Perkins worse things could happen.

Said the Cubs would take the best college bat available, and they did, but the only pick that I really wasn't aware of was the Phils, but I said nobody knew what they would do...

well that sucks, you don't draft a reliever to be a starter 6th overall

A reliever at #6 overall? Yikes...

DJ and the team believe he's going to stick in the rotation.  I would have loved him to be there for the Cubs at 9 but knew that was slim as Chicago was going to take the best college bat period (and use those savings for HS arms in 4-10 rds).

Twins might be able to get Jay at 300-500K below the full slot value (3.9M)

I couldn't care less that Jay WAS a reliever.

We got a fresh LH arm with power stuff, multiple plus pitches, and command. What's not to like?

The fact that when you go from pitching 1-2 innings a game to 6-9 innings a game your stuff typically diminishes in some way. Just because he has a plus to plus-plus fastball as a RPer doesn't mean he will have a plus to plus-plus fastball as a starter.

My concern is that there is basically zero evidence to prove that his stuff will hold up when switching to a professional starter schedule - 6+ innings every five days. He only pitched 60 innings this year, which is his career high. Will his stuff stay when he gets to 80, or 100, or 150 innings? Or will his 95 MPH fastball drop down to 91 MPH when in a starters role? It wouldn't be the first time that a reliever loses velocity when moving to a starter.

He recently turned 21 - we'll see. It might take a 2-3 years to get his innings up to starter level, and if it works, with Gonsalves, lefty hell for our opponents. if not, Perkins replacement, or at least very valuable commodity for trade.

I would have preferred a hitter, but I can see all the logic of this pick. Elite lefties don't grow on trees.

Who was left on the board that you all wanted?

Well for those who are worried about Jay for the rest of the season, I'll be watching him in the GCL (if he gets sent here) and Instructional League. It'll be interesting to see how they treat him and how and when they stretch him out.

Oh , he wont be at GCL, be surprised if he isnt at Cedar Rapids, and if not there, Elizabethton. That is just an opinion, but a polished college pitcher usually isnt in the GCL.

So which college relief pitcher are they drafting at 73? If they draft like they have the past few years you know more are coming. Already got 1!

I don't fully understand the concern, and here's why: a vast majority of college starters who ever make the majors do so as relievers, because they fail to develop effective secondary pitches, right? It usually isn't about stamina and arm strength, but about having a mix that works  through a turn of the lineup or two. So, If the scouts believe in a prospect's ability to develop pitches, why is it such a huge stretch to think a guy like Duffy or Jay can gain the necessary stamina and arm strength to succeed as a starter. Body type? Tate is 6'2", Jay 6'1", right?
