Fien activated, Tonkin demoted

Saying Tonkin is better than Stauffer is obvious, but probably the wrong way to look at it. Stauffer is blocking a bat, not an arm. They wouldn't want Tonkin up and not pitching, and he would be the 4th righty out of the pen, alternating mop up duty with Graham.

Both good points......which is why I posted the question about number of pitchers just above *

*likely a cross post, for sure

Go Twins!

Very doubtful.  Who was the closer in Rochester when they were both there?

Why does that matter? Pressly can go multiple innings and has better stuff, much better in the role as third righty, with Boyer and Fien as the setup guys.

Thanks.

I predict potentially scary things in this thread if there is a cancellation tonight.

Someone should post kitten or flower pictures maybe.....

I think it is generally agreed that the Twins should drop Stauffer and add a bat. Hopefully (hopefully, hopefully) just waiting for Arcia to return. But yes, really no excuse for not having one of Pinto, Vargas or Arcia on the roster.

5.14 ERA, 6.13 FIP and 1.43 WHIP

Tonkin's numbers this season.   Does that look like someone who pitched well enough to deserve a job in the the majors playing for a division leader?

Nope.

(Stauffer hasn't either, but that is another story.)

Tonkin may be no great shakes, but we've had to throw him into some pretty tight spots the past week, and we basically run out of trusted right handed relief arms once we've used Boyer.

I'm glad Fien is back, but they need to try finding another solid RHP, whether they want to keep trying Tonkin or someone else.  Keeping Stauffer under glass to break in case of emergency doesn't really do anything for this team.

Better stuff?  Very debatable.  Multiple innings?  Perhaps, but he hasn't been asked to demonstrat that since 2013.

Amen.  (And Ryan's "explanation" for staying with 13 arms made absolutely no sense.)

Classic TR move. Glad to know that the FO still doesn't know when to cut bait on a sunk cost. Or understand something as basic as K/BB ratio.

I think the thought process is more pitchers at this time.  we keep both pitchers by sending Tonkin down giving us more options throughout the season.  after a month or 2 of more games we wont need as many options and the fat will be trimmed.

That was the thought process on opening day too.  At what point do you move on from maximizing available options to actually trying to maximize talent?

And what kind of option is Stauffer now anyway?  He was given a chance to start in spring, was terrible, made the bullpen and was quickly ushered into a mop-up role where he performed poorly, was hurt, and now has been buried for the last week even in mop-up situations.  Anthony Swarzak was freely available recently if you need another pitcher like that, you don't have to waste a 25-man roster spot holding on to one in reserve.

Not a Fien fan by any means, but even him was better than Tonkin...

Why can't both Tonkin and Fien be in the bullpen at the same time? Stauffer and Duenseng should have been DFA'd ages ago. And it would probably be wise to dump Boyer before that awful K/BB ratio catches up with him and he turns back into a pumpkin like the bullpen version of Nick Blackburn. Call up Oliveros and Achter. It's not that hard to improve the ticking time bomb that is the Twins' bullpen.

What will be really interesting, will they actually keep Stauffer long enough to pay him his bonus?  You know it true love then :)

Though he receives only a $2.2MM guarantee, recently-signed Twins righty Tim Stauffer can earn significantly more through incentives, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports. Stauffer can max out his deal at a total of $3.95MM ($1.75MM bonus) if he makes 55 appearances in the coming season. He can earn $250K bonuses upon his 15th, 18th, 21st, 24th, and 27th appearances, land $100K for the 45th time he takes the hill, and nab another $250K at number fifty-five.

I realize Stauffer had a rough start this season, but who didn't? With the way the Twins are playing, he might actually do well.

He has a pretty nice pedigree (4th overall pick 2003, oh Matt Moses....), and in 10 ML seasons he has a career ERA below 4.

I for one am curious to see what this guy can offer when healthy.

Time to start day drinking.

This is the latest canary to go into the coalmine and die a rather unfortunate death. Something has to be seriously broken within management for this situation to persist, where a $2 million reliever is somehow ruining the bench and degrading the bullpen at the same time. It isn't a case of understandable disagreement - this is pure, irrational error on the part of the Twins.

All along I've worried about the rebuild, because I rarely have seen organizations in any field where the little things were totally botched but the big picture went really well. And there is zero reason to think anything is going to change.

Look at his results as a RP the last few years.....replacement level. You know, the kind of guy a normal team sends back and forth between the majors and AAA, not the kind they pay lots of money and keep around .

8 appearances so far. I think the Pohlad's money is safe.

At his usage rate from the past week (or month if you count his time on the DL), Stauffer may be with us all season and not reach the 15 games bonus. :)

And he wasn't healthy the past week?  When we had 5 and 7 run leads?

I'll give you credit for optimism.

I did notice that last year he had a 9.4/3.2 k/bb/9 that dropped to 1.9(!)/5.6 this year. I thought it was clear he was hurt, but his performance at Rochester in his rehab didn't inspire much confidence that he is any healthier. His k/9 last year would rank him #1 on the Twins right now.

Stauffer. Tonkin.

This will all be forgotten once Tyler Jay and Alex Meyer are setting up Perk come August in the middle of a pennant race!!

It will probably be forgotten when Arcia gets called up in a week and Stauffer goes.

Isn't that what we were promised 1-2 weeks ago, that when Fien came up, Stauffer would be gone, and we would all forget keeping him over a hitter?

Stauffer lives!

I looked up Stauffer's career stats. When healthy, he's been an ERA 3.50 kinda guy. I can see why the club doesn't want to lose him before they see what he can do.

As for Tonkin vs. Fien, seems like kind of a wash. Fien's got a track record of success with this team. Tonkin goes down mainly on seniority rules.

I'm pretty sure we were promised nothing.
