gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 In a pitching duel against the Nats AJ Cole. 6ip, 3 walks, 2hits, 11k. How many good starts before we should bring him up? 1?
John Kelsey Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Good is a bit of an understatement, two more of those and he should be up.
tobi0040 Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Good is a bit of an understatement, two more of those and he should be up. Agreed. I was going to say 3 in a row. They don't need to be as good as today. Just three in a row without a complete disaster on the BB front. Like 5-7 BB per start.
nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Desperately needed good news. $%*# yeah! This is why he needs to keep starting. Even if he has only a 20% chance of starting long-term (I think it is probably higher than that) it is worth the extra development time. It isn't like we are one good reliever away from competing this year anyway.
twinscowboysbulls Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Cool beans. I hope 1 or 2 of these guys heat it up with the stick soon. Pinto, Rosario, Hicks, Sano, Buxton.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 And who does he replace? Yeah, that's my question. And that immediately after, who does Nolasco supplant when he comes off the DL? (But that's a different topic for a different thread in a different forum far, far away.)
Secondary User Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Lol....for those following the game, AJ Achter came in for the 7th inning and gave up a walk off home run to the first batter (shortened due to double header. On a side note, he did still only throw 55 strikes out of 96 pitches.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Sooo.... "Mini-Consistency"? And who does he replace?I don't think that will be a problem, unfortunately. If Gibson is still pitching like this, send him back down.

(But that's a different topic for a different thread in a different forum far, far away.) 2 Scenario's Nolasco bumps Pelfrey to the pen shortly, which bumps Thielbar or Boyer. In 2 weeks, the odds are good that Milone falls apart or it is clear Nolasco is still hurt and needs something done. Enter Meyer* *assuming he continues to have an idea of where the ball is going.

That seems like a Twins-type move (financial considerations/preserving value on the veterans), not sure if that's the right move, it seems too premature to pull the plug on Gibson. That's not a great ratio The definition of "effectively wild."
Secondary User Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 The definition of "effectively wild." I'd love for him to be at "effective"

(of course Nolasco should have four more starts before a decision is made on him.)
twinssouth Provisional Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Meyer gets thru a full 6 innings, on 96 pitches. Probably had more in the tank. It's been a long time since we've seen that. Great JOB future ACE. Cole had 1 heck of a game. Can you believe Achter. He throws 1 stinking pitch and it's a homer. He?? of a way to finish a game. All in all, I'm happy.

(of course Nolasco should have four more starts before a decision is made on him.) While I agree that the error definitely played a role, Gibson still only had a lead off runner on first. He did walk the next guy and give up a double. He shouldn't have to deal with extra adversity, yes, but his inability to handle it says something. He lacks the ability to just buckle down and get someone out situationally. Whether it's not having a two strike out pitch, or not being able to cope with an inning like last night, it is a concern

He's struck out 3 guys in over 15 innings and he's not getting ground balls. Something's not working. Hopefully, he comes out of this. But if he's still throwing like this in a couple weeks (assuming Meyer is pitching better) then send him down and fix it in AAA.

True, but it's an out, pitching from the stretch unnecessarily, and if the replay I saw was the correct one, the wild pitch was a ball right in front of Kurt, that went right through his wickets. Kurt just plain fanned on it. While it's true that Gibson should have been able to miss a few bats to help out his defense, we keep those guys in the minors. In the majors we like to have our pitchers be able to pitch to contact when base runners clog the base paths! (I will now deduct 2 points from my snarky allotment for the week).

(of course Nolasco should have four more starts before a decision is made on him.) And that's the crux of the problem for Meyer in potentially coming up after 2 more effective starts. Barring Tobi's somewhat unlikely scenario of both- Nolasco needing extended time on the DL- coupled with Milone's or Pelfrey's pitching falling off of a cliff (the Twins have a tendency to keep running guys out there as long as they can maintain "mediocrity")- in the Twins' way of thinking, Meyer will likely still be effectively blocked by two of the three veterans. They seem committed to trying to somehow extract value from those veterans before casting them to the wind. Replacing May or Gibson due to (Take your pick- one or more of the following):"ineffectiveness"/"consistency"/"non-minimizing"... seems like Meyer's best path to the Twins in the very short term (BTW, this would not be the right move, IMO- I'd like to see Gibson work through things at the major league level working with Allen.) I am not going to pay huge attention to ratio's after 15 innings. If Gibson was pitching for the Royals, his LF makes the catch and his pen doesn't let two runners score after he leaves (one on a wild pitch). Scratch that, any other LF makes the catch.

My scenario for Meyer was an either, not both. I think Nolasco pushes Pelf to the pen soon. Either Milone implodes OR Nolasco is still hurt and after a few more starts it is clear he is. To me, this reeks of the Scott Baker situation a few years ago. The guy is not right, hasn't been for a long time. Complains and we tell him to pitch through it. Then low and behold he we realize he is hurt.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Honest question. Did they only play 7 innings because it's a double header today? Or do they always play 7 innings?

His history from last year suggests that he can make adjustments after dreadful performances and do quite well. And his velocity has actually ticked up a bit from last season, across the board on all of his main pitches.
Hrbowski Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Honest question. Did they only play 7 innings because it's a double header today? Or do they always play 7 innings?Just because it was a double header.
h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 A seven inning professional baseball game again? That's not pro baseball. I hate that. Like playing a double header after a postponed game is too much for these guys. I thought if you are in the minors, it is a given that you need more work, not less.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 My scenario for Meyer was an either, not both. I know, but you would still need two predictive outcomes come to pass, Meyer still has to jump over two of three veterans in some fashion.
