Vargas couldn't dig out Santana's relay to complete an inning ending double play.

Runner at second with two outs, as the ball skips out of play.

Stuaffer shouldn't accrue any earned runs for this outing. I think. (I guess he is responsible for the runner at second, as double plays aren't supposed to be assumed...)

Stauffer lowers his ERA to 9.82 with one pitch.

Finally caught up.  Enjoyable game so far.  

 

Maybe they got rid of a lot of yips in the home opener.

I agree Mike but I also would say Mauer probably has contributed to more runs the same way Hunter just did than any other player in the league over the years.    Thome, Cuddyer, and Morneau had an awful lot of RBI from groundouts, singles and sac flies because of the guys Mauer advanced to 2nd and 3rd.    Over time Mauer has created a lot of runs without getting credit for either an RBI or a run scored so I am ok with the cheap ones he does get.    .

and last night Mauer gets Santana to 3rd (and Santana should have scored) then Dozier makes the first out of the inning by flying out and gets an RBI.  Who contributed more to that run?

 

I think Mauer XBH issues has to do with him focusing so hard on pulling the ball instead of doing what comes naturally.  Yeah,, he's getting singles to RF and CF, but no hits opposite field and no XBH.

and that's why wRC+ is better than RBI.

Yeah.  RBI, not a great stat.  But Runs Created... that's pretty useful.

good point, which is why I like some of the more advanced stats that actually take that into account

Fan interference?  What's that about?

After passing 1st, ball went into foul territory, bounced off wall, but a fan reaching over collected that bounce.

 

Vargas was given first, but not second, as Dyson was hovering to pick up the carom right away.
