Absolutely you trade both Ryan and Lopez this offseason. The Twins as currently constructed/operated have no obvious path to being competitive any time soon. Lopez will be making north of 20% of payroll next year. There’s no reason to do that on a non-competitive team. Re: Ryan, the Twins would be selling high-ish since he will get expensive before there is a competitive team around him (assuming he stays healthy and continues to pitch well.) Likewise you ask Buxton if he wants to revisit his no-trade clause not because you want him to leave but as a professional courtesy. He would be an even more incredible player surrounded by better hitters. Other players like Larnach, Jeffers and Wallner should also be made available if anyone offers a return you like. Just be the organization you are and stop hoping you'll get lucky with half-measures. You might. But the odds are you won't.

C: Micky Gasper 1B: D. Falvey. Look, we know it's not ideal since he 'knows more about pitching than hitting or fielding.' But he's already on the payroll and doesn't really have a lot to do. 2B: Luke Keaschall SS: Brooks Lee 3B: Royce Lewis LF: Courtney from Marketing. She's an unpaid intern so the price is right. And according to Brian her former boss who we had to let go for harassment, she has great legs. CF: Byron Buxton RF: Matt Walner

These Three Twins Are Approaching Make-Or-Break Status
dogsday replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I doubt Woods Richardson is in any danger. 1-2 of Lopez, Ryan, Ober are probably gone this winter. Zebby, Fiesta, Abel, Bradley, Woods Richardson,???...pick 3-4 as needed for your opening day roster and the rest become 6, 7 and 8 on the depth chart.- 49 replies

Agree. Unless Ober can reduce the traffic on the bases, his results seem precarious and not sustainable and he would be the one to trade (if you're going to trade any of your starters.,)

Twins (Lopez) vs Guardians (Boyd): 9/16/24, 5:40pm

I assumed the OP was about trading prospects to get to the playoffs (which may not be true) and I was reacting to that. If there is a trade that will improve the team, sure make it. But trades are as much a crap shoot as prospects (especially if you don;'t have the payroll to buy again if you miss). The Twins currently rank 9th (out of 30) in OPS and 14th in WHIP. If they make the playoffs, the simple odds they get to the WS are 16% and change. But the real odds? Again, if you can improve the team (not just for this season) by making a trade, that's a good thing. But if you are weakening the team long term to get to the playoffs this year? Given the team we are seeing, I was saying I would stick with the prospects for this year and work on the improving the development system.

Why? Unless something changes dramatically, the Twins are as likely to be sellers as buyers, hoping some team sees marginal value in Farmer or Santana, or sees valuable unlocked potential in a Kirilloff, Larnach, Julien, etc. It's probably just time to be patient and try to coach up and see if we have a pitching pipeline in Ryan, Ober, Festa, Matthews, Lewis et al, or just a pitching pipe dream. And ditto with the position players. Right now, the Twins are in an awkward, hard to watch middle ground.

Whether this is the Buxton we get for the rest of his career in Minnesota is probably up to Buxton and whoever he trusts to work with. He's certainly still young enough and athletic enough to improve his hitting performance within whatever limitations his health imposes. But without some effective changes, he will continue to be what he is, an occasionally amazing hitting talent but more often an average or slightly below average hitter.

It hasn't been at all confidence inspiring, but if you told me the Twins would be playing at a 90 win pace at the end of May, I would have thought--perfect! The division is a lock and maybe they can catch lightening in a bottle for the playoffs.

Ownership right-sized their spending, the players are right-sizing their performance. Fans can right-size their engagement. If I were Falvey or Levine I'm probably wishing I'd chosen this year to say 'Mission accomplished. The organization has been remade and is in a good place, and I 'm moving on.'

I wonder if that's true of prospect lists. For a list that is heavy on hopes and dreams for players with little to no professional experience (which is more about drafting and acquisition), probably true . But for a prospect list that gives weight to performance at various levels of the minors, a 66% success rate may be typical???? It would be interesting and informative to know.

Astros 3, Twins 2: The Season is Over
dogsday replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We got Alcala and Celestino in the Pressly trade, so no, it hasn't worked out for the Twins. But would the Twins have extended/resigned Pressly? Have to leave that answer to the contra-historians.- 126 replies

It's great that the Twins will enter the playoffs with good starting pitching. But so will the other playoff teams. If the Twins face Seattle in the first round, in games one and two, they will face Castillo and Gilbert. If it's Toronto, it's Berrios and Gausman. If it's Houston it's Verlander and Valdez. The Texas starters are harder to predict (because of injuries) but they also have potentially good front line starting pitching (Dunning, Scherzer, Gray, Eovoldi...). As the article notes, The Twins will need to score some runs (and get good pitching) to advance.

Did Taylor and Castro Save the 2023 Twins?
dogsday replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hmm...headline begins with the premise that the 2023 Twins have been saved. Still seems very much in the balance, whatever the merits of the players (Castro and Taylor) themselves.- 23 replies

If Kierkegaard can be a difference maker for the Twins, the sky is the limit. Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Heidegger, Socrates. No one else is drafting and developing these guys. 🙃

I know I'd have felt better if the Royals swept the Twins and Greinke struck out maybe 25 batters in 4 perfect innings.😜
