Either of us could've hit 1st in the order and gone 0-14 with 14 Ks and the Twins still would've won those 3 games. KC being a AAAA team and scoring 4 runs in 3 games has no bearing on the discussion.

Fitting that KC was 0-infinity with RISP through 3 games and the streak was snapped 2 batters into Pagan's 9th inning appearance.

A New Outfielder Could be Twins Saving Grace
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is he going to bounce back from a sub .700 OPS against both LHP and RHP at 32? A replacement level bat starting 80-100 games (without major injuries) in CF isn't a saving grace, and if you're using a player as regularly as it seems the Twins will use Taylor, he ceases to become insurance or depth.- 14 replies

Are Long Starts Coming for the Twins?
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the Twins viewpoint on this is clear, and again, the fact that they're ok with Maeda in the rotation and Sands in the pen as a long man is telling as well. Yes, getting rid of Archer helps. Yes, I expect the Twins to be closer to average than dead last in innings per start. Yes, talent plays a role as well, but I don't think the "quick hooks," or pitch counts, or guys not coming out to start the 6th innings are a thing of the past and I'm not arguing whether or not they should be.- 41 replies

Are Long Starts Coming for the Twins?
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Along with a bullpen full of guys incapable of throwing more than a single inning per outing, and time missed, short starts undeniably put this team in an awful position. Yes, the length of the average start might've been down across the league, but the Twins were an extreme; I think they ranked like 28th or somewhere close. IMO you don't end up there by accident, so Idk if I'd call the short starts a true distraction. I don't expect a repeat of that ranking for reasons you've listed, but I also don't think we'll see a massive departure from last season's philosophy. The FO is ok with Maeda in the rotation to start and they're insistent on carrying Sands as a long man. An extra out is probably the best case scenario.- 41 replies

Came here to say the same thing. The Twins tendered contracts to 32 year old Emilio Pagan and 36 year old Caleb Thielbar. That was it for bullpen additions. Moran and Sands are the only "young," arms trying to carve out a role, and they're both 26. This is more of a last gasp than a youthful audition for them. Winder probably fits into that group as well. Idk what to do with Henriquez; he's young, but it's not like he's someone you want in the bullpen at this point. Lopez at 27 is an improvement in every way over Archer at 33. Idk if people realize Bundy was only 29 last year. Gray is 33. Mahle will turn 29 by the end of the year. Ryan is the youngest SP entering the year and he'll be 27 in a couple months. Going with 35 year old Kenta Maeda over Ober kinda blows up the youth movement notion by itself, but Ober is 28 years old. Then, as you pointed out, 3/5 (Gray, Mahle, and Maeda) of the rotation are UFAs after this year, with Lopez following suit the year after. The article didn't really get into position players, but adding a 33 year old C, a 33 year old utility IFer, a 32 year old 4th OFer, and a 35 year old 1B/DH doesn't exactly scream youth either. Obviously health/production from Lee, Lewis, and Kirilloff wipes out a lot of that, but at least for now, this team isn't betting heavily on youth.

It also strongly suggests Ober himself won't be making "a lot of starts," for the Twins.

There isn't any development left for Ober in AAA. It's not like he'll be sitting on ice in St. Paul either, he's going to be throwing innings, which history tells us are limited in his case. Yes, Sands and Ober play different positions, but they're linked as far as roster construction goes. I'd rather see the Twins try to max Ober's healthy innings than hide Cole Sands at the back end of a bullpen.

Unless I haven't caught an update, it was still considered a high ankle sprain right? Those tend to linger, which is concerning, but yeah, I hope he's good to go for the rest of the season. Yep, can't get here fast enough.

3/4 of those career years prior to the last two seasons he had fewer than 100 PAs. His 2019 splits still wildly favor him against lefties but even that SS is half of his 2021 PAs. I still expect him to hit lefties well, but if we're talking about outliers, are we sure last season wasn't one?

Partially why I mentioned Gordon's ankle. Farmer killed lefties last year, his splits the previous season aren't nearly as extreme. I'm skeptical, but you never know. Me too, I'm on the Kirilloff hype train, full-bore, but I definitely think it's wait and see mode right now, which isn't anywhere close to being ready for opening day. I'm pretty sure there's a Hayes article in The Athletic from yesterday that casts doubt on Kirilloff's readiness. Again, it's wait and see.

If Gordon's ankle is good to go by opening day I'll feel ok, at least to start the season. If Solano and/or Farmer are getting starts at 2B for any extended amount of time I wouldn't consider 2B covered. Idk if Kirilloff is actually tracking to be starting at 1B on opening day either. Is anybody actually arguing that the season is over?

If Mahle is worth a QO he's almost certainly gone without an extension. I doubt Gray is trying to reset his market at 34, so if he's worth a QO he's also likely looking at multi year deals or an extension. Of the two I'd be more interested in extending Mahle, but I have serious doubts that this FO is interested in doing a 3-5 year extension at $20M+ per year. I can see them doing another two years with Gray, but again, that's a 34 year old who isn't exactly a workhorse so they could be ready to move on there as well. I have zero interest in retaining Maeda or Gallo.

Will Caution Matter for Twins Key Pieces?

Rumor: Gavin Lux out for season, Dodgers likely interested in SS
KirbyDome89 replied to High heat's topic in Other Baseball
Fair, I just think Farmer would be the sweetener in a swap that has MN receiving a top 100 C prospect, and at that point Idk if the deal makes sense for either side. -

I couldn't say yes to that swap fast enough, which means it's probably not enough to swing a deal even if LA had interest in Farmer. -
Who Will Relieve the Relievers?

The Dobnak hype train started with the same "erratic," pitching schedule in 2020. How long before we stop blaming similar usage for his poor performances since that small sample his rookie year?- 22 replies

Are You Ready for Emilio Pagan to Work?
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You labeled logic that defied statistical evidence as "wrong." I just pointed out that you're using similar logic to argue for the Pagan renaissance. How he's used, and subsequent damage caused to the team, or lack thereof, isn't the issue in question; it's whether or not he's actually able to be "fixed."- 63 replies

Are You Ready for Emilio Pagan to Work?
KirbyDome89 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right, which is to say that Pagan could turn things around based on these adjustments, or resolution to whatever outside causes you want to speculate on, despite his awful track record and age, correct? Again, "you never know," is being applied in the face of statistical unlikelihood in both cases. Every team has roles "set," entering the season, that doesn't really mean anything. Miranda played a majority of last year, he isn't a roster change, but if you want to talk about him at 3B specifically, his defensive fit certainly could be considered a question mark. Kirilloff's wrist isn't a question mark? Gallo isn't a question mark after his abysmal 2022 season? Who is your 2nd SP acquired? Taylor's bat isn't a question mark if he's getting extended playing time as Buxton insurance? You're going to mention all the injuries, but those aren't question marks this season!? Mahle, Ober, and Winder are health locks? Maeda and Alcala won't miss a beat post elbow procedures? Jorge Lopez's absolute meltdown in a Twins uniform was just a blip? Pagan has been beaten to death. An offense that was inconsistent or non existent at times, and lost one of its most reliable/best bats, will be better despite the only clear upgrade coming at C? I mean c'mon, these are just off the top of my head.- 63 replies
