  1. This. It wasn't that long ago that Julien was the 2B of the future, Lewis was entrenched at 3B, and people were worried about how this team was going to find Brooks Lee ABs....
  2. Ahh not really if we're claiming Bell has been producing for the last month.
  3. Josh Bell has an 84 OPS+ and he's been a negative WAR player to date. His 30 game SS is being carried by his last week+ where he has 3 HRs. The rest of the 30 game stretch is just as underwhelming as his season totals. .244/.286/.385 from mid May through the first week of June.
  4. MLB needs to ban these embarrassing 8th/9th inning position player pitching appearances. Seriously. Idk exactly how you legislate that with the Ohtani situation in LA, but non pitchers throwing non-competitive pitches is gross; it needs to stop.
  5. Utility players rarely excel at every position they play. Most teams (probably all of them) aren't starting 8 regulars who excel defensively. Good defenders can move around and remain good defenders. Playing multiple positions doesn't degrade your defensive prowess. The Twins' struggles defensively aren't because guys haven't gotten enough reps, it's because the organization hasn't prioritized defense. When were Trevor Larnach or Matt Wallner ever a good defender? Julien? Miranda? Brooks Lee might be above average now that he's at 3B. Keaschall hasn't ever been a plus guy with the glove. Jeffers isn't a particularly good defensive catcher. Lewis had issues throwing and picking the ball up in the minors. Is Austin Martin an average OF now that he's not playing CF? Maybe? I mean Josh Bell was their big "get," this past offseason.
  6. Nobody wanted him at the deadline last year. Why is a team suddenly giving up anything for an older/worse version this season? Textbook sunk cost fallacy.
  7. It's far more the latter than the former. You want players that can play multiple positions, defensive versatility is massively valuable when it comes to roster building. As far as the Lewis play goes, he's a former SS, picking the ball up shouldn't be an issue for him no matter where he's at on the IF.
  8. Unbelievable that was his only earned run allowed with the Twins (thus far at least)
  9. How long does the Justin Lawrence experiment need to last? 3.2 IP, 5 BB, 2 HP, 2 H so far....
  10. People are actually mad about "constant roster churn," on a team that's on pace to lose 90ish games? Lol ok.... Also, good luck getting anything of actual value in return for Kody Clemens. He was pretty much unplayable for most of last season, and that was after Philadelphia discarded him. A good month+ isn't going to suddenly convince a remotely competent FO to give up actual value.
  11. So are we sure this incident actually occurred? The Twins and MLB investigated Duran's claim. That was a pretty empty ballpark when the heckle occurred, and if the fan was yelling loud enough for Duran to hear him, anybody else (park staff included) within earshot would've also heard. No ejections, no action post investigation, nobody came forward to corroborate Duran's accusation. I mean.... I have a hard time believing a fan could yell what Duran alleges, and not a single person around that individual confronted them, or said something to staff, and neither the Twins nor MLB could pinpoint who the fan was.
  12. Taj was erratic, there's no other way to spin it. 7 hits and 5 walks in less than 5 IP, he's lucky Chicago only got him for 4 ER. Idk what they do with Caratini but at some point you can't continue to play a guy who is this bad both offensively and defensively. He's a soon to be 33 year old catcher, how much positive regression can we realistically hope for here?
  13. Given the fodder that still exists in the bullpen I think the decision to DFA was pretty short sighted. Maybe SWR would've been a poor relief pitcher, maybe he never regains any sort of useful form, but this same team was totally comfortable beginning the season with a patchwork pen and now there's suddenly no room? Eh... Ober gets a longer leash because he's been a much better pitcher than SWR. I think it's that simple. If Ober has a few more outings similar to his last start in Pittsburgh we're probably starting to have the same uncomfortable conversation about him.
  14. I'm pushing back against cumulative WAR being the deciding factor here, not the Twins motivation at the time, although I'll happily admit I thought they should've extended Berrios and despite the TJ injury this season I very much doubt Toronto is displeased with their investment.
  15. Ok, why is WAR "appropriate analysis?" You want context, ok. Would you rather have 6 WAR over 4 seasons or 5 WAR in one season? I'll say it again, Austin Martin hasn't cracked 1 WAR in 200 games played. SWR has 2.6 career WAR in 2+ seasons as a SP for the Twins. They've combined to top Berrios' output in that very convenient 1.33 year SS because Berrios had a down 2022. Cool. Toronto unquestionably got the better player. Berrios has been a better pitcher than SWR since that swap, and sure, you can play the injury card now that he finally got hurt, but SWR has been unplayable as evidenced by his DFA so what are we really arguing here...
  16. Yeah, if we want to pretend like Berrios ceased to exist post 2022 because an extension conveniently nullifies post production then sure, things look a lot better for the Twins. Berrios put up 2.5 WAR in 2023 and hit that number again in 2024. He threw nearly 200 innings each season as well. He threw basically 2/3 of SWR's entire career IPs with MN in one season. Berrios was/is in a different class. Austin Martin has .7 career WAR in nearly 200 games played. I mean....
  17. TB literally just gave those guys away but they're part of the future for MN? Yeesh....
  18. No, Derek Shelton nor his staff deserve blame for Lewis and Wallner further regressing to start this season, nor do they deserve most of the credit for the positives. These "play the results," type articles are an exercise in futility...
  19. 3 AL teams entered today with a winning record. 3.... This club is competitive insofar as the rising tide, i.e. the mediocrity of the AL, has raised all ships. I mean Baltimore is 2 games out of a WC spot with 4th worst run differential in baseball....
  20. Your framing of the Lewis 2B fiasco is disingenuous, particularly if you're going to claim a false narrative/context around the attempted swap. "He didn't refuse to play 2B, in fact he did play 2B." Yeah, a single start and a whopping 8 total innings after which he publicly complained about playing 2B and magically never made another appearance at the position. But sure, technically he didn't refuse lolol.... “I’m terrified out there. Little things like that are just adding extra elements to a September push that’s important to me. I don’t know. We have plenty of really good second basemen, and I don’t want to mess up our defense just because we’re going to try something new. It’s not spring training or Triple-A for that.” That was the quote Lewis gave after his singular start at 2B. We want context right, so who were those other "really good 2B?" Kyle Farmer and Edouard Julien. More context; that 2024 squad was in a tailspin, and desperate to get what they perceived as their best bats in the lineup every remaining game. They weren't asking Lewis to be the 2B of the future, they were trying to fit an extra corner bat into the lineup to stop the bleeding, but I guess Julien and Farmer playing at a sub replacement level qualified as plenty of good 2B options...
  21. 1) Disagree entirely with the notion that Baldelli et al "ruined," Royce Lewis, but if that's the argument being made, wouldn't swing path adjustments, pitch sequencing, ect fall under the jurisdiction of the hitting coach? How many hitting coaches, professional and personal, has Lewis had at this point? 2) What players from the Falvey/Baldelli regime fulfilled their potential elsewhere? Jose Miranda was just released from the Padre's org. Julien has been pretty terrible in Colorado. I can't think of a single prominent arm.
  22. The Twins were trying to win games in 2024. Polanco was asset, Idk why people seem to forget that. Acquiring a SP and a RP who contributed nothing while giving away that asset made the 2024 Twins worse. Simply counting WAR doesn't give you the full scope of that swap, or any swap for that matter.
  23. It's been pointed out multiple times in this thread that they're playing at a 75 win pace. How low was your expected win total that you feel the need to scold others for not rejoicing over "how much better than expected," this team is playing? "Hey be happy with what you've got," given how the last few seasons have gone, and how the current season appears to be going, seems weird, but ok...
  24. "The Twins didn't put him in a position to succeed, either. Minnesota faced an unusually heavy dose of left-handed starting pitching during the first month of the season, and the club continued running Wallner into the lineup regularly despite his long-standing platoon concerns. His production against right-handed pitching was already underwhelming with a .580 OPS, but things cratered further against lefties, where he posted just a .496 OPS." This is such a terrible argument. A gap of 80ish points of OPS LH vs. RH is normal, the issue is that neither number was remotely close to acceptable. That's not the Twins failing to put Wallner in a position to succeed, they gave him every opportunity (probably too many) to show any sign of life. FWIW he had 2x more PAs against RHP....
