  1. According to the box score, the blown save statistic is just BS.
  2. BUT, what is the alternative? My objection to the signing was largely "Why spend the money on him?" It's not like we don't have cheap alternatives as LH power bats who play corner outfield and 1B who may well turn out to be better: Kirilloff, Larnach, and Wallner. And, of course, we also have Kepler if the youngsters don't measure up. To me, the Gallo signing was a very poor one because we lost a huge amount of development time for those three kids and, really, didn't get much in return (unless you are trying to run up opposing pitchers' strikeout totals, which Gallo does singularly well).
  3. As usual, Nick, I find myself in substantial agreement with the points you make. As someone once said, "It's hard to get a clutch hit with both hands around your throat." These Twins' hitters really choke a lot in key situations. Unlike Kirby, who carried the team on his back, these guys are looking for a back onto which to climb, and there is none available.
  4. To me, that was not unlucky, it was incompetent defense from the pitcher. You don't need to be Greg Maddux or Jim Kaat to make that an out.
  5. Looks like a meagre crowd today. I wonder if the mass shooting a mile away made people more nervous then usual about central Baltimore. Or if the Orioles just aren't drawing despite their improved success this year.
  6. And only one run allowed in 22 innings.
  7. Presumably on the passed ball that would have been.
  8. Kind of pathetic that Miranda was sent down in great disappointment with a .220 BA, which, upon his recall, exceeds Buxton, Correa, and Taylor in today's regular starting lineup (not to mention Gallo and Kepler, who always start against RHP). Given that termites seem to have devoured the entire team's bats, maybe his start wasn't all that bad.
  9. Foul ball, I think.. But an important out. It the runner had been standing on the base, he might have scored.
  10. Interesting. I'll have to try it. Next time you're out that way, I recommend Syncline. Great Rhone wines about ten miles east of White Salmon.
  11. Well, since he's a farmer, there's lots of choices. Maybe a threat involving steer manure to anyone who didn't start hitting?
  12. From the Twins' Web site: Kind of tells it all: 1. Correa has been terrible at the plate this year. 2. No one who has been less terrible has enough PA to qualify.
  13. This clip from Twins' Web site kind of says it all: 1. Correa has been terrible at the plate. 2. No one hitting any better has enough PA to qualify.
  14. I feel like the organization is being run by Enron alumni. Despite evidence to the contrary, they are convinced that they are smarter than everyone else and that they will eventually rule the world. Only someone named Pohlad can change things. Is he part of the problem or part of the solution?
  15. Buxton, Gallo, and Correa are like expensive speed bumps in the Twins' offense. It seems like every time the rest of the team starts to get something started, one of them comes up and strikes out or grounds into a DP to slow things back down.
  16. Well, it doesn't have to change. But it has to change if I'm going to start watching games again.
  17. I'd suggest "trading" him to St. Paul, but he would be blocking prospects.
  18. Not much competition in the Twins' system for "catcher of the future," so it's good that we have him.
  19. My favorite (English) football team began the season with a ton of talent. They won only 2 of their first 11 games of the just-completed season and looked exactly like the Twins look now: no energy, no intelligence, no desire to win. Just putting in the time and cashing the paychecks. They were in 17th place, just out of the relegation zone. They fired the manager and hired someone who was tactically and motivationally brilliant. Despite having their share of injuries and only one new player added at the equivalent of the trade deadline, the team rose ten places over the remaining 27 games to finish 7th and qualify for a European competition for the first time in 12 years. Leadership DOES make a difference, at least sometimes.
  20. Bravo, Nick. Not only poor, but unwatchable! The Twins out-homered the Rays today 2-1, and lost the game 4-2. Nobody wants to just get on base or create runs in any other way. It's like they are playing homerun derby while the other team plays baseball, and beats them.
  21. And it gets worse going forward. Between strikeouts and injuries, Byron Albatross provides little value and is being paid $15m per year for another half-decade. Carlos Albatross makes $33.3m for a similar time and mostly just strikes out and grounds into double plays. This team has two strikes against it for the next five years. And that's not counting the non-trivial likelihood that the $20+m that Pablo Lopez makes starting in two years ends up paying for disappointing performances, or even for a pitcher sidelined by injuries. Twins fans had better hope that their kids all turn into superstars (and several might!), because they won't be able to afford anything more expensive.
  22. Is Arraez eligible? He's having a sensational season, but wearing the wrong shirt!
