  1. What would Jack Morris have done if Rocco had been his manager? Fist-fight on the mound maybe? He probably gets pulled in the 6th inning of Game 7, 1991.
  2. My morning started with elation! The football team I follow ended it's season with a win and qualified for a European competition next year for the first time in 13 years. Then the Twins happened. Pathetic performance with all the spirit of a spreadsheet!
  3. Exactly this! Give me a reason to watch! Give me a reason to care, other than having been born in Minnesota!
  4. Pretty intimidating statistics for the Twins' three starters in this series!
  5. My amateur opinion is that we need better "man management." Rocco is supposed to be a good "players' manager," but the sense I have of his style is that he never pushes them or makes demands. That's good when it works, but sometimes the "Oh, well. You did your best," approach leaves a lot on the table. I doubt that Tom Kelly ever hesitated to call his players out when they underperformed. Some players need that. The Twins' stars seem too complacent. Maybe Rocco gives them hell sometimes, but you never hear about it or see it in his interviews.
  6. Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. The Twins are a bad team with a lot of good players.
  7. How bad is the AL Central? If you add up the four non-Twins teams, they have a .362 winning percentage, which is lower than EVERY OTHER TEAM in the AL except Oakland and EVERY TEAM in the NL except St Louis.
  8. The negative WPA is as interesting as the positive for this game. There were a lot of hitters who had big chances to contribute, but didn't: Polanco: -0.209 Vazquez: -0.167 Correa: -0.165 Larnach: -0.162.
  9. He's not going to keep this up all season, of course. I just hope he is able to pitch all season!
  10. Which is why a lot of us were NOT happy about signing Gallo! Which is better? How about neither?!
  11. Yes, he is becoming Sano, and it's the Twins' fault! He has tremendous skill, but power hitting is the only dimension that seems to interest the Twins. Sad! He's an exciting player being crippled by that philosophy. He should have signed somewhere where a team will utilize all of his skills. We get a few extra first-to-thirds from his speed, and an occasional infield hit or stretched-into-double. But really, he might as well run like Sano if he's not going to play in the field or try to steal bases.
  12. Missed the game, but it sounds like the Hospital Twins are picking up right where they left off last year.
  13. They looked pretty lame in the first two KC games as well. It's early, but so far it's been feast or famine for the offense and, of course, since we have no piranhas to create runs, nothing happens when the sluggers are quiet.
  14. I'm withholding judgment until the Twins play a major-league opponent. The Royals look like they could lose 120 this year.
  15. I agree with this completely. He could be an MVP with his speed and defense. But that's not who he has been over his career. Just another pull hitter who strikes out a lot and hits a few homeruns. If he's a DH and not stealing bases, he's less valuable than Kepler, who gives us elite defense every night and a similar profile at the plate.
  16. Why would he let such sentiment infringe on St. Urho's Day celebrations?
  17. As always, Nick, thoughtful, interesting, and well-written! I know I probably sound like your mom, but I really enjoy what you contribute to the site.
  18. Just curious: Is TD abandoning the written word? I love reports from Spring Training, but I hate listening rather than reading.
  19. The pitch clock may force me to pay attention to the game! This could be good or bad. I'm nearly always doing something else on my computer and have the Twins on in the background, often muted. The balance of downtime to action has been such that I can keep my mind on the other activities and still see nearly every pitch---like blinking and not losing track of what you're reading or watching. That balance will change, and it might force me to choose between whatever else I'm doing and watching the Twins. I'm not sure which I will choose. I might actually end up watching the Twins games less!
  20. And unless he is batting right at the top of the lineup, Solano is likely to get at most two AB against a lefty starter before the (likely RH) bullpen takes over.
  21. We are stockpiling Grade C players. Unless there are major injuries or outgoings, this makes no sense to me.
