This clip from Twins' Web site kind of says it all: 1. Correa has been terrible at the plate. 2. No one hitting any better has enough PA to qualify.

Buxton, Gallo, and Correa are like expensive speed bumps in the Twins' offense. It seems like every time the rest of the team starts to get something started, one of them comes up and strikes out or grounds into a DP to slow things back down.

My favorite (English) football team began the season with a ton of talent. They won only 2 of their first 11 games of the just-completed season and looked exactly like the Twins look now: no energy, no intelligence, no desire to win. Just putting in the time and cashing the paychecks. They were in 17th place, just out of the relegation zone. They fired the manager and hired someone who was tactically and motivationally brilliant. Despite having their share of injuries and only one new player added at the equivalent of the trade deadline, the team rose ten places over the remaining 27 games to finish 7th and qualify for a European competition for the first time in 12 years. Leadership DOES make a difference, at least sometimes.

Bravo, Nick. Not only poor, but unwatchable! The Twins out-homered the Rays today 2-1, and lost the game 4-2. Nobody wants to just get on base or create runs in any other way. It's like they are playing homerun derby while the other team plays baseball, and beats them.

And it gets worse going forward. Between strikeouts and injuries, Byron Albatross provides little value and is being paid $15m per year for another half-decade. Carlos Albatross makes $33.3m for a similar time and mostly just strikes out and grounds into double plays. This team has two strikes against it for the next five years. And that's not counting the non-trivial likelihood that the $20+m that Pablo Lopez makes starting in two years ends up paying for disappointing performances, or even for a pitcher sidelined by injuries. Twins fans had better hope that their kids all turn into superstars (and several might!), because they won't be able to afford anything more expensive.

What would Jack Morris have done if Rocco had been his manager? Fist-fight on the mound maybe? He probably gets pulled in the 6th inning of Game 7, 1991.

Blue Jays 3, Twins 0: Time to Do Something Else
PDX Twin replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My morning started with elation! The football team I follow ended it's season with a win and qualified for a European competition next year for the first time in 13 years. Then the Twins happened. Pathetic performance with all the spirit of a spreadsheet!- 77 replies

My amateur opinion is that we need better "man management." Rocco is supposed to be a good "players' manager," but the sense I have of his style is that he never pushes them or makes demands. That's good when it works, but sometimes the "Oh, well. You did your best," approach leaves a lot on the table. I doubt that Tom Kelly ever hesitated to call his players out when they underperformed. Some players need that. The Twins' stars seem too complacent. Maybe Rocco gives them hell sometimes, but you never hear about it or see it in his interviews.

Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. The Twins are a bad team with a lot of good players.

How bad is the AL Central? If you add up the four non-Twins teams, they have a .362 winning percentage, which is lower than EVERY OTHER TEAM in the AL except Oakland and EVERY TEAM in the NL except St Louis.

The negative WPA is as interesting as the positive for this game. There were a lot of hitters who had big chances to contribute, but didn't: Polanco: -0.209 Vazquez: -0.167 Correa: -0.165 Larnach: -0.162.

Is Byron Buxton Too Much Miguel Sano?

Which is why a lot of us were NOT happy about signing Gallo! Which is better? How about neither?! -
Is Byron Buxton Too Much Miguel Sano?
PDX Twin replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, he is becoming Sano, and it's the Twins' fault! He has tremendous skill, but power hitting is the only dimension that seems to interest the Twins. Sad! He's an exciting player being crippled by that philosophy. He should have signed somewhere where a team will utilize all of his skills. We get a few extra first-to-thirds from his speed, and an occasional infield hit or stretched-into-double. But really, he might as well run like Sano if he's not going to play in the field or try to steal bases. -
