Nick, you asked for good news, so I'll mention some, which is relatively "old news", but still good news. During the off season, the Twins FO was intentional in making reasonable plans for these injuries.

The Night Luis Arraez Blew Up Baseball
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought the atmosphere at the Twins vs. Dominican Republic game last week at Hammond was also special. It was mainly due to the DR fans. They were wonderful in their support of their team. I enjoyed meeting a half dozen DR fans just to chat. The 4 Twins/Oakland games in the dome in the summer of 1987 were intense, sold out, loud and victorious, but there were few Oakland fans there. The World Series Twins/Braves game I attended in Atlanta was more rowdy than I liked because I was wearing a Twins hat and shirt. But the Braves won that game, so the rowdy taunts turned to non-threatening, victorious taunts. All in all, you pay your money and you take your chances sometimes (like attending a Duke/ Carolina basketball game at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium, while wearing a Carolina Blue shirt and Tarheel hat, which was actually fun and safe). Be true to your team, except when safety required the removal of my victorious Tarheel hat at NC State's home basketball court. My favorite story was at a Clemson football game where I was decked out in my Tarheel regalia and I got to watch the Tigers spend a long afternoon teaching the lowly Tarheels all about how to play football. As I got up from my seat to leave, the vociferous Clemson fan who was seated behind me, loudly told me goodbye and in his southern drawl said: "Ya'll come back now, ya hear."- 41 replies

I'm Drinking the Twins' Kool-Aid
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Adam Neisen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You're getting old. -
Start with this premise: The Twins have never traded for an existing ace pitcher, and are not going to trade for an existing ace pitcher. The Twins have shown that this FO will not sign an existing free agent ace. Frankly, I understand why and I tend to agree. The high cost would handcuff the FO. I hate trading away numerous successful Twins players, whom I have watched mature and grow and become successful (cough, cough Arraez). These players become fan favorites for a reason. Therefore the only way for this Twins' FO to get an ace, and I submit the cheapest way for any team to get an ace, is to get lucky and draft one. To do that, the previously unlucky Twins, must draft more pitchers in the earliest rounds possible, some of whom inevitably are going to get hurt and most of whom will not pan out. A number 5 draft pick for many teams should be the best player available. But the Twins already have a "28 year old best SS in the world, team leader" signed for the next 6 years plus a previous #1 draft pick at SS and last year's top pick at # 8 "best college hitter in the draft, hitting machine" at SS, and a solid supporting cast of an All-Star 2B switch hitter, and a sophomore probable masher at 3B, resulting in a log-jam at middle infield and do not need another SS/2B/3B right now. I would not want to be the best middle infielder in the 2023 draft and be selected by the Twins. What is the sense in drafting the best SS available when the Twins are going to have to trade him anyway due to the log-jam at SS? But he won't be traded for an ace pitcher, because the Twins don't do that. I rest my case.

Could Bailey Ober Still Win A Rotation Spot?
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's not like Ober is a flash in the pan, who just began showing his worth in this spring training. All through his career, he has proven to be a pitcher with outstanding control. He had a good year last year and could not have been any better in spring training so far. If he continues this success in spring training, the Twins must make him a regular starter. The Twins already need a long reliever, and Maeda fits this mold. Bottom line is I have more faith in Ober as a starter, than I do in Maeda. Ober is beating Meada out for the 5th starter position so far, based on past performances and on this spring training's performances.- 51 replies

When a lefty pitches put Gallo in left, Buck in center and Taylor in right and we will have the top 3 total "defensive runs saved" outfielders since 2020. These three, playing together, may even catch the rain.

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Shortstop
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Should the twins draft a SS in this June's draft, if the Twins feel he is the best available player? Or should the Twins draft the best pitcher available? The reason I am putting this question in this set of posts is because many of us have posted here about the wealth of SS's and SS prospects which the Twins have.- 13 replies

Good review. I wish there were a way to rate the abilities of catchers to call appropriate pitches.

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Shortstop
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
C4 is an amazing SS and an encouraging mentor and co-team leader with Buck. The FO had a successfully productive off season, which I would rank as the best ever off season for the Twins. I understand the defensive improvements that most of the acquisitions bring, including Gallo. C4, Farmer, Vazquez, and Taylor. These defensive improvements will help the pitchers. Now if Coach Popkins can help Gallo and others like he helped Correa last season, the Twins will have a strong hitting team. Buck, Correa, Miranda, Gallo, Polo, and hopefully Kirilloff are all capable of carrying a team offensively. Even though there were only a few additions to the pitching staff, trading for Lopez and getting Maeda back, are huge improvements. As far as the BP goes, Duran, Jax, Lopez, Duran, Theilbar, Moran and Duran appear to be solid. I look for Ryan to shine. The pitching is as good overall, from 1 to 13, as I have seen for the Twins. It's going to be a long season, but day by day, game by game, the Twins will build a successful season in 2023. Play ball!- 13 replies

Hitting left-handed is an advantage in baseball, due to being closer to 1B than a R/H batter, having one's body going in to direction of 1B as the swing is completed and due to there being 75 % (plus or minus) right-handed pitches in the major leagues, which means that 75 % of pitches faced by a lefty stand to be from an easier to see R/H pitcher. I know lefty relievers are brought in to face lefty hitters, but with the relatively new requirements of a reliever facing 3 batters, that affects these stats some. Therefore I am happy the FO has obtained an abundance of L/H hitters. I'll close with this: Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Tris Speaker, Stan Musial, Barry Bonds, Rod Carew, Tony Gwyn, Mel Ott, Ichiro Suzuki all had something in common. Can you guess what it is?

That # 5 draft pick is an important pick this year. There will be some top- notch talent available this draft at # 5. The Twins will do a good job in evaluating the prospects and I expect the Twins to be cautious. If the Twins are not going to pay for an "Ace" SP and don't want to trade numerous top prospects for an "Ace" pitcher, then this is the only other way to get one. Yes, drafting a pitcher is risky, but what is the alternative to getting that one great pitcher, as opposed to getting more above average pitchers?

The Downfall of Byung-Ho Park

This is just one of those things we'll never know. I wish him well in Korea. I hope he is happy and not filled with regret. It is not the ultimate goal in everyone's life to be a major league baseball player in the US. Nor should it be. -

In your post, Jeffers needs to be added to the first list of 2023 on the bench. Good work by the Twins FO and good article by you.
